In southeast Ohio, Athens County shares a small portion of its border with West Virginia. The current courthouse, in the county seat of Athens, was built between 1878 and 1880. Athens is home to the first university in the Northwest Territory, Ohio University, which was founded one year before the county was founded in 1805.
