00:00:38Some Ohioans are indicted
00:00:38for illegal voting. But
00:00:42there's a very serious problem
00:00:42with one of those cases.
00:00:45State lawmakers could consider
00:00:46property tax changes
00:00:46as those tax bills ballooned.
00:00:50And the North Coast
00:00:51was rocking last weekend
00:00:52with a concert that brought
00:00:52in millions of dollars.
00:00:55That's this
00:00:55weekend. The state of Ohio.
00:01:15Welcome to the state of Ohio.
00:01:17I'm Karen Kasler.
00:01:18Six Ohioans were indicted
00:01:18last week for illegal
00:01:21voting between 2008 and 2020.
00:01:24Out of the millions of ballots
00:01:24cast in those dozen years,
00:01:28and it turns out
00:01:28one of those who was indicted
00:01:30has actually been dead
00:01:30for two years.
00:01:33The indictments, announced
00:01:33by Republican Attorney General
00:01:36Dave Yost, came from around
00:01:36600 cases of potential voter
00:01:39irregularities
00:01:39referred by Secretary of State
00:01:42Frank Larose,
00:01:42also a Republican.
00:01:44138 of those cases
00:01:44were thought to involve
00:01:47illegal voting.
00:01:48Improper voter registration
00:01:50was suspected
00:01:50in the other cases.
00:01:52And Yost does not have
00:01:52jurisdiction over those.
00:01:55The indicted individuals
00:01:55are accused of voting
00:01:57at least once,
00:01:57even though they were not U.S.
00:02:00citizens during that period.
00:02:01But five were permanent
00:02:01residents with green cards.
00:02:04Yost noted that illegal voting
00:02:04is very rare.
00:02:08Voting irregularities
00:02:08like this are rare.
00:02:13There are small number,
00:02:13and you should rest assured
00:02:15your Secretary of State
00:02:15flagged these cases and sent
00:02:19them to me.
00:02:20I took a look at them and
00:02:22I'm taking appropriate actions
00:02:22and enforcement.
00:02:26But Cuyahoga County
00:02:26Prosecutor Michael O'Malley,
00:02:26a Democrat, said the next day
00:02:29that one indicted
00:02:29Ohioan died in December 2022.
00:02:33And he added, quote,
00:02:35this is one of the greatest
00:02:36examples
00:02:36of prosecutorial overreach
00:02:38I have ever witnessed.
00:02:40The practice of indicting
00:02:40the deceased is draconian,
00:02:43end quote.
00:02:44O'Malley called on Yost
00:02:45to dismiss the indictment,
00:02:45which the AG says he will.
00:02:49Ohio's 88 county
00:02:49boards of elections
00:02:51are managing early voting
00:02:53and getting prepared
00:02:53for election night.
00:02:54Less than two weeks away.
00:02:56But they're also dealing
00:02:56with residents
00:02:58who are using a state law
00:02:58to challenge
00:03:00other Ohioans right to vote.
00:03:02In some cases,
00:03:02they're questioning thousands
00:03:04of those registrations
00:03:05as duplicates from voters
00:03:05registered elsewhere.
00:03:08Would County
00:03:08has gotten challenges
00:03:08to 16,000 voter registrations.
00:03:12Other counties have challenges
00:03:12in smaller numbers.
00:03:15Elections workers
00:03:15have to review the rolls
00:03:17and may hold hearings on the
00:03:17merits of those challenges.
00:03:20The requests are coming
00:03:20from people
00:03:21using public data
00:03:21from conservative groups
00:03:24to try to find errors.
00:03:25But it's not clear if they are
00:03:25targeting Democratic voters.
00:03:29Many Ohio
00:03:29homeowners are in that period
00:03:31between just having paid
00:03:31property taxes
00:03:34and the next property
00:03:34tax bill coming due.
00:03:36And for many,
00:03:36the bill is a lot
00:03:38bigger than it was
00:03:38not long ago.
00:03:40State lawmakers are expected
00:03:41to return to work
00:03:41after next month's election.
00:03:44And one topic
00:03:44likely on the lame duck
00:03:46agenda is property tax changes
00:03:46and reform.
00:03:49A bipartisan joint committee
00:03:49was supposed to have put out
00:03:52recommendations
00:03:52for legislation
00:03:54after a series of meetings
00:03:54earlier
00:03:56this year, but has not.
00:03:57So minority Democrats
00:03:57are trying to push the issue.
00:04:00I talked with Senator Hershel
00:04:00Craig of Columbus,
00:04:02the assistant minority leader
00:04:02in the Senate,
00:04:05and a member
00:04:05of that committee.
00:04:06And we have to recognize that
00:04:06there is a housing crisis.
00:04:10You know, homeowners
00:04:10and families are struggling,
00:04:13trying to make their monthly
00:04:13payments,
00:04:16peak,
00:04:16families are on fixed incomes.
00:04:19You know, our seniors,
00:04:19we have calls in our office
00:04:24where seniors
00:04:24are literally crying,
00:04:27worried
00:04:27about staying in their homes.
00:04:30So we don't
00:04:31really have a choice of doing
00:04:31nothing is not a choice.
00:04:35And so we have to look at that
00:04:35seriously, as you know,
00:04:38in Franklin County
00:04:38and in central Ohio
00:04:40particularly,
00:04:40it was a perfect storm
00:04:42because at the same time,
00:04:44these property tax assets
00:04:44wrong.
00:04:46Precipitously.
00:04:48At that same time,
00:04:49our children, we had a,
00:04:49a levy for our schools.
00:04:54And so it was very,
00:04:54very difficult,
00:04:57for families during that
00:04:57period to make a decision
00:05:00on supporting our children.
00:05:02At the same time they were
00:05:02struggling with this tax.
00:05:05You know, the property
00:05:05tax increase.
00:05:07But whatever you do,
00:05:08you could potentially
00:05:09exacerbate the problem
00:05:09if you try to do a quick fix
00:05:13just to solve it.
00:05:13Now, couldn't there
00:05:13be an effect down the road?
00:05:16Well, you know,
00:05:16there needs to obviously
00:05:19be, some long term
00:05:19solutions to this.
00:05:22We've got to be very
00:05:22thoughtful about this issue.
00:05:25You're absolutely right.
00:05:27But but there has to be
00:05:27something that we can do.
00:05:32It may be, increasing,
00:05:34expanding the, some of the,
00:05:39the home stay at homestead
00:05:39exemption to the other things
00:05:42that we can do
00:05:42that is practical,
00:05:42that is reasonable,
00:05:45that we can do
00:05:45more immediately, but,
00:05:48we have families right now
00:05:48that are struggling
00:05:51significantly,
00:05:51regarding this issue.
00:05:54And we must be able
00:05:54to do something.
00:05:56This is our we have a
00:05:56great state, good minds.
00:06:01And if folks are walking
00:06:01on the moon,
00:06:04then we've got to be able
00:06:05to do something
00:06:05that can help families.
00:06:07I think the, bill
00:06:07that would temporarily expand
00:06:10the homestead
00:06:10exemption, house Bill 187
00:06:10is probably the closest one
00:06:14to actually getting passed,
00:06:15but there's about a dozen
00:06:15bills that are out there
00:06:17that talked about capping
00:06:17property tax increases.
00:06:21Creating a circuit
00:06:21breaker for property taxes.
00:06:24Tell me about
00:06:24what your proposals have been.
00:06:26Well, you know, again,
00:06:26you mentioned some of them,
00:06:29you know,
00:06:29and they're bipartisan bills.
00:06:31And we are they ought to be,
00:06:33because it affects
00:06:33all of our families.
00:06:35It's not a Republican
00:06:35or Democrat issue.
00:06:37It's a human issue.
00:06:39I have six bills that they're
00:06:39a bipartisan bills
00:06:42working with.
00:06:43Senator, little blessing,
00:06:43working with Senator Reynolds.
00:06:47These are they're important.
00:06:49But it's not just introducing
00:06:49the bills that does not
00:06:53do a lot for families.
00:06:54It's getting them passed
00:06:54and getting them moved.
00:06:57You know, again,
00:06:57we need to be thoughtful
00:06:59about this.
00:07:00I certainly you mentioned,
00:07:00the House bill, 187.
00:07:05I think we can get that done.
00:07:08And so, obviously,
00:07:08I'm extremely hopeful.
00:07:12I'm talking to our colleagues
00:07:12all of the time.
00:07:15We can get this done.
00:07:16What about the 5%
00:07:16cap on property taxes?
00:07:19That's one you're involved in.
00:07:20Well, you know, we call that
00:07:20the circuit breaker.
00:07:22Where where,
00:07:22you know, in fact, working.
00:07:26I've had that bill, introduced
00:07:26that bill.
00:07:28Senator Blessing said let's
00:07:28let's go together on this.
00:07:32You know, I'm also yes,
00:07:32you know, I'm serving on
00:07:35this, property
00:07:35tax reform committee,
00:07:38and, he is the vice vice chair
00:07:38of that committee.
00:07:41And so,
00:07:41I think it is reasonable.
00:07:44I think
00:07:45that's one of the bills
00:07:45I think that we can get done.
00:07:47I've been working
00:07:47with the auditor,
00:07:49with the Franklin
00:07:49County auditor, Mr..
00:07:51Sensational.
00:07:52When I introduced that bill
00:07:52some years ago,
00:07:55I think there's real
00:07:55possibilities
00:07:57in getting getting
00:07:57some movement.
00:07:59That movement there,
00:07:59it won't please everyone.
00:08:01But the simple truth is, we've
00:08:01we've got to look at where
00:08:05we can find some short term
00:08:05goals and then, more longer
00:08:09term goals, because property
00:08:09taxes is a complicated issue,
00:08:13but that does not negate
00:08:13our responsibility
00:08:17to really find a fair
00:08:17and equitable way,
00:08:20to, work through our property
00:08:20tax challenges.
00:08:23You mentioned that
00:08:23you proposed this,
00:08:25several years ago,
00:08:27this is a problem that's
00:08:27been building for a while.
00:08:29This didn't happen overnight
00:08:29just because of one event.
00:08:32This has been yeah,
00:08:33multiple factors
00:08:33that have been involved here.
00:08:36Well, yeah.
00:08:37And it has.
00:08:38And I think
00:08:38working with the auditor,
00:08:40we were seeing some things
00:08:40that's going to be happening.
00:08:43the other part of this,
00:08:43in addition to homeowners,
00:08:46is this issue around renters
00:08:46that has grown exponentially.
00:08:51And we want to make sure
00:08:52that we're able
00:08:52to retain young people.
00:08:54They're young college
00:08:54students.
00:08:56They're graduated.
00:08:57We want them to stay in Ohio.
00:08:59And but
00:09:00but that issue around
00:09:01affordability,
00:09:01we have all these
00:09:02wonderful things with Intel
00:09:02and Google and all of this.
00:09:05That's business.
00:09:06But we've got to make sure
00:09:08that that we have
00:09:08they can afford the properties
00:09:11to live in Ohio.
00:09:13This is an issue.
00:09:14But the Chamber of Commerce
00:09:14and they're excited
00:09:17and they know that the chamber
00:09:17that we've got to be able
00:09:20to do something
00:09:20regarding housing,
00:09:22that is one of their prime
00:09:22initiatives.
00:09:25And so we have work to do.
00:09:27Senator blessing has talked
00:09:28on this show
00:09:28about the Joint Committee
00:09:30on Property Tax Review
00:09:30and Reform that you're on.
00:09:32And one of the things
00:09:32he's talked about
00:09:34is tax abatements
00:09:34and how tax abatements
00:09:36basically make it
00:09:36so that there's less
00:09:39revenue coming in.
00:09:40So that's more of a burden
00:09:42on homeowners
00:09:42and agriculture owners.
00:09:45But tax abatements are used
00:09:45by cities like Columbus
00:09:48to encourage development,
00:09:48to bring people and,
00:09:52businesses into communities.
00:09:53How do you balance that?
00:09:55Well, let's it has to be
00:09:55a case by case basis.
00:09:57Garrett has, you know,
00:09:59the reason
00:09:59why Columbus has has had
00:10:01this enormous growth is public
00:10:01and private partnerships.
00:10:04But you've got to hold the
00:10:06and make sure that they're
00:10:06good corporate partners,
00:10:08that you hold them
00:10:08accountable and responsible.
00:10:11It can't create development.
00:10:13But but that's
00:10:13got to be measured as well.
00:10:16We've got to look at it very
00:10:18carefully on a case
00:10:18by case basis.
00:10:20And what's the obviously
00:10:20we got to look at the outcome
00:10:24of what we doing,
00:10:25but we're going to look at
00:10:25I think we responsibly
00:10:28have got to
00:10:28look at everything.
00:10:29Everything is on the table
00:10:29so that we're able to support
00:10:33business,
00:10:34support our families
00:10:34that are our children
00:10:36to support our schools.
00:10:38And that's sometimes
00:10:38a delicate balance,
00:10:40but it's one in which
00:10:40we've got to look at clearly.
00:10:43Is there anything
00:10:43that can be done
00:10:44about corporations
00:10:44buying up homes?
00:10:46Because that's another thing
00:10:47we're seeing in
00:10:47Ohio is companies
00:10:48that are buying up homes
00:10:48that go up for sale,
00:10:50that drives up
00:10:50the cost of homes
00:10:52because there now
00:10:53is less inventory
00:10:53for people to look at.
00:10:55Listen, I appreciate
00:10:55you raising that issue.
00:10:57I know, Senator Blessing,
00:10:59I we're on one accord on
00:10:59that one because they're LLCs
00:11:03and they're not
00:11:04good corporate partners,
00:11:04and we difficult to find them.
00:11:08And so we're
00:11:08looking at that issue too.
00:11:11Now we want to continue
00:11:11to have development.
00:11:13Make no mistake about it.
00:11:14We need to continue
00:11:14to have good corporate
00:11:16partners, in terms
00:11:16as we look at how we do this.
00:11:20But we've got to make certain
00:11:20that there is accountability
00:11:23across the board,
00:11:23with regard to this matter.
00:11:27And that's one of those issues
00:11:28we've got to look at
00:11:28very carefully.
00:11:29Senator blessing
00:11:30says that
00:11:30whatever is recommended
00:11:32that comes out of that
00:11:32committee
00:11:33needs to be completely state
00:11:33funded and means tested.
00:11:36Now, the, homestead
00:11:38exemption,
00:11:38the temporary expansion of
00:11:40that would not be
00:11:40completely state funded.
00:11:42But do you think that
00:11:42your colleagues
00:11:45on the Republican
00:11:45and Democratic side
00:11:46would go along with
00:11:47making sure it's completely
00:11:47state funded and means tested?
00:11:50Well, look,
00:11:51I think the accountability
00:11:51issue needs to be there.
00:11:55I mean, in terms of the state
00:11:55funding,
00:11:57I mean, it's
00:11:57the people's money.
00:11:59Whatever we do, we have to be
00:11:59extremely careful
00:12:01that we're doing it
00:12:01efficiently, effectively
00:12:04and thoughtfully,
00:12:04and that there is equity
00:12:06and accountability
00:12:06across the board.
00:12:08So to that extent, I say, yes.
00:12:11But again,
00:12:11working in my caucus,
00:12:11I won't get ahead of them.
00:12:15But but I think it is
00:12:17reasonable to think
00:12:17that if we can find a way
00:12:20mutually respecting way,
00:12:20and across the board,
00:12:2499 members in the House,
00:12:2433 members in the Senate,
00:12:27let's come up with a solution
00:12:27that is that is fair.
00:12:31And that works
00:12:31for all of our families,
00:12:32whether it's an urban center
00:12:32or a suburban center
00:12:36or a rural area
00:12:36where families are struggling
00:12:39that we come up with
00:12:39with solutions that that,
00:12:42effectively impact all of our
00:12:42residents in a positive way.
00:12:46The panel that you're on
00:12:47was supposed to issue a report
00:12:47this summer,
00:12:49and I've been in touch
00:12:49with Senator Blessing
00:12:51about when that report
00:12:51would come out.
00:12:53And he said that, the staff
00:12:53is still waiting on the house.
00:12:56And what
00:12:56they want to do, so is
00:12:59why is this in limbo?
00:13:00Is this more of the struggle
00:13:01between the leadership
00:13:01in the House
00:13:03and Senate,
00:13:03or what's the holdup?
00:13:06Listen, I can't say,
00:13:06you know, with you with
00:13:10all of the reasons why,
00:13:10but here's here's what
00:13:12I want to have happen.
00:13:12We know that
00:13:15people are struggling
00:13:15and they're hurting.
00:13:17And and I would just encourage
00:13:17all of us, the House
00:13:21and the Senate to come
00:13:21together around common sense.
00:13:24Common goals to do the work
00:13:24that we've been called to do.
00:13:28That's my answer to this
00:13:28and my hope, to all of them,
00:13:32we have work to do
00:13:32that's find some common ground
00:13:35that that's done.
00:13:36The November vote is looming
00:13:36and it's serious business.
00:13:38But there was also
00:13:38serious business.
00:13:40And one of the biggest events
00:13:40regularly scheduled in Ohio
00:13:44that blasted away on the North
00:13:44coast last weekend.
00:13:46The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame
00:13:46welcomed 16 inductees,
00:13:49ranging from Cher
00:13:51to Cool in the gang to Ozzy
00:13:51Osborne to Big Mama Thornton.
00:13:54The induction
00:13:54ceremony and concert,
00:13:56set for every other year
00:13:56in Cleveland,
00:13:58brings in not only rock stars
00:14:00and other celebrities,
00:14:00but also millions of dollars.
00:14:03This week,
00:14:03I sat down with Jack
00:14:04Marchbank,
00:14:04who is the recently retired
00:14:06director of the Ohio
00:14:06Department of Transportation
00:14:08and is also a respected expert
00:14:08in music and culture
00:14:11who has been covering
00:14:12the Rock Hall inductions
00:14:12in Cleveland since 2005.
00:14:15Well, let's talk about this
00:14:15year's class, which,
00:14:18as people can see right behind
00:14:18you is, the t shirt,
00:14:21the official t shirt there.
00:14:22Which performance
00:14:22was your favorite?
00:14:26The best.
00:14:26Which one would you want?
00:14:27People, if they only
00:14:27could have seen these.
00:14:30Wow, there's so many.
00:14:32That's like,
00:14:32who's your favorite child?
00:14:33And all
00:14:33your kids are looking at you.
00:14:36Oh, it just started
00:14:36with a bang with, you know,
00:14:39Dua Lipa and Cher with Billy,
00:14:39you know, that.
00:14:41Just got it off
00:14:41to a stop and start,
00:14:43you know, with Dua
00:14:43Lipa and Cher and of course,
00:14:47also, the gang,
00:14:47even though I didn't
00:14:50get to see, much of that
00:14:50at all.
00:14:52The other is,
00:14:52Dionne Warwick and,
00:14:57Jennifer Hudson.
00:14:58Jennifer Hudson
00:14:58has such a fantastic voice
00:15:00of what people may not know
00:15:02is that she actually
00:15:02auditioned for American Idol.
00:15:05Never made the final cut on a
00:15:05on a Dionne Warwick song.
00:15:08So she's she's loved Dionne.
00:15:09I think the song was
00:15:11The Empty Place, one of Dion's
00:15:11more obscure songs.
00:15:14And, she's loved
00:15:14Dionne Warwick
00:15:16ever since she was a child.
00:15:18So those were the ones
00:15:18I know, of course.
00:15:20Peter Frampton,
00:15:20Keith Urban and Roger Daltrey.
00:15:24It doesn't
00:15:24get any better than that.
00:15:26And that brings up
00:15:26that it's not just these folks
00:15:28who are there, it's
00:15:29also other celebrities
00:15:29and musical artists
00:15:32who come in to perform
00:15:32with them and introduce them.
00:15:34So you get you get a whole
00:15:34gamut of really
00:15:38star studded performances.
00:15:40In many cases,
00:15:40some of the induction
00:15:42ceremony, some of the comments
00:15:42and the intros
00:15:44are actually better
00:15:44than the performances you had.
00:15:46Dave Chappelle, he showed up,
00:15:46for some induction.
00:15:49And, of course,
00:15:49Chuck D is always poignant.
00:15:53He says these days
00:15:53people listen
00:15:55too much with their eyes.
00:15:57They need to listen with their
00:15:57ears, hearts and minds.
00:15:59And I said, oh,
00:15:59let me write that down.
00:16:02Now. Cher said something
00:16:02kind of interesting
00:16:04about how it was harder
00:16:04to get divorced from two men
00:16:07than it was to get into
00:16:07the Rock n Roll Hall shows.
00:16:09You did.
00:16:09And she basically backstage
00:16:09said she forgave everybody.
00:16:12And, that was good to know.
00:16:14And, it's really I learned
00:16:14something I didn't know.
00:16:18I didn't know
00:16:18that Robert cool.
00:16:20Bill was from Youngstown.
00:16:22I always thought that
00:16:22the cool in a gang
00:16:23where is new Jersey
00:16:23is where they rose to fame.
00:16:25I thought he was from
00:16:25new Jersey.
00:16:27And he said, no, no, you know.
00:16:29No, we're from Youngstown.
00:16:30You were like
00:16:30The Beverly Hillbillies.
00:16:31We got in our in our,
00:16:33station wagon
00:16:33and drove to new Jersey.
00:16:34You know, I said,
00:16:34okay, so very, very exciting.
00:16:38Now, it was 5.5 hours.
00:16:40That's an awful long time.
00:16:41Why is it 5.5 hours?
00:16:44First of all, it's a party,
00:16:44you know, and,
00:16:46you have industry types
00:16:46who mix and chat and,
00:16:51you know,
00:16:51they talk to each other
00:16:52and, again, they know they're
00:16:52going to edit it for TV.
00:16:56So they're not really watching
00:16:56the clock
00:16:59like you usually do
00:16:59in production.
00:17:00So you want people
00:17:00to really express themselves.
00:17:05So you get those nuggets
00:17:05like from Chuck D
00:17:08or some of the great things
00:17:09from Dionne Warwick,
00:17:09like when she heard
00:17:11she was being inducted,
00:17:11she said, why, why,
00:17:14why be a good doctor,
00:17:14you know?
00:17:16And she said,
00:17:16I never thought of myself
00:17:17as a rock n roll her.
00:17:18But when she got backstage
00:17:18rage with, Jennifer Hudson,
00:17:22she said she realized
00:17:23how much her music
00:17:23meant to all these people.
00:17:24And you can you can see
00:17:24the connection is all.
00:17:27Enter mash, this one tapestry.
00:17:29All of music.
00:17:30And there was no super jam
00:17:30this time.
00:17:32There
00:17:32hasn't been one for a while.
00:17:34Why not?
00:17:35Well,
00:17:36you would think with a Dave
00:17:36Matthews Band there,
00:17:39it would have been
00:17:39a super jam.
00:17:41Again, I, I don't know
00:17:41who rules the production,
00:17:46but it is Disney, that,
00:17:46you know, runs the thing now.
00:17:49So I suppose
00:17:49they have their reasons.
00:17:52I think the performers
00:17:52get most of the attention.
00:17:54Do you think there's enough
00:17:55attention paid to the people
00:17:55who are being inducted?
00:17:58Not as performers? People?
00:18:00The musical excellence Award,
00:18:00the Musical influence award?
00:18:03Oh, definitely. Definitely.
00:18:04And this year they had two
00:18:04that were really exciting.
00:18:07Norman Whitfield,
00:18:07who's responsible
00:18:09for some of the temptations
00:18:09greatest hits
00:18:11and, responsible for it.
00:18:13When Stars War,
00:18:13which became an anthem
00:18:15in the late 60s, early 70s.
00:18:17Of course,
00:18:17Papa was a rolling Stone.
00:18:18That's that's a chestnut.
00:18:20And I've always been impressed
00:18:20with the professionalism
00:18:23and elegance and intelligence
00:18:23of Susan de Paz, she said.
00:18:28I have one talent is that she
00:18:28says, my talent is I can
00:18:32identify people who have it
00:18:32and I know what to do with it.
00:18:35Once I identified she,
00:18:35she basically
00:18:38discovered the Jackson five.
00:18:40Although Diana Ross
00:18:40kind of took credit for it.
00:18:42She discovered the Jackson
00:18:42five, she discovered DeBarge,
00:18:46she signed Rick James,
00:18:46she signed the Commodores.
00:18:49Really powering Motown
00:18:49and its latter years.
00:18:52Now it gets a little
00:18:52bittersweet
00:18:54sometimes, I think,
00:18:54because you have performers
00:18:57who can't make it, performers
00:18:57who literally can't make it,
00:19:00like Jimmy Buffett,
00:19:01who passed away, performers
00:19:01who are there
00:19:03but can't perform
00:19:03like Ozzy Osborne.
00:19:05So it's it's
00:19:05kind of a bittersweet thing
00:19:07as you're watching
00:19:08some of these artists
00:19:08get older and be unable
00:19:11to do what they did
00:19:11to rise to fame.
00:19:12Well, yeah, it's always,
00:19:12you know,
00:19:15painful to see them get frail.
00:19:16You know, Peter Frampton,
00:19:16everybody's vision of him
00:19:20as this guy with flowing blond
00:19:20locks, you know, on
00:19:23the cover of Frampton
00:19:23Comes Alive and he had a cane.
00:19:27I'm like, oh,
00:19:28you know that that wasn't,
00:19:28you know, pleasant to see.
00:19:32But it really is always good
00:19:32to know that their music
00:19:36lives on in their music.
00:19:36That's eternally young.
00:19:39Somebody said something.
00:19:40I think it might have been,
00:19:43Greg Harris.
00:19:45Somebody said, you know,
00:19:45rock and roll is not just,
00:19:48you know, the music.
00:19:49It's it's a spirit,
00:19:49an attitude.
00:19:51And, that's really great.
00:19:54I thought
00:19:54that was a great statement.
00:19:55My, my biggest disappointment
00:19:56is that nobody did a big Mama
00:19:56Thornton song.
00:19:58She I was hoping that somebody
00:20:00would do a hound dog,
00:20:00but they didn't.
00:20:02And Greg Harris would be the
00:20:02CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall.
00:20:05Yes, yes. Music.
00:20:06Let me ask you, in 2022,
00:20:08Dolly Parton
00:20:09was inducted into the hall,
00:20:10and there were
00:20:10some people saying that.
00:20:12Oh 21 2121 in 2021,
00:20:12Dolly Parton
00:20:15was inducted into the hall.
00:20:16There were folks
00:20:17who were saying
00:20:17she didn't belong there.
00:20:19And it really started
00:20:19this debate over
00:20:21what is rock music.
00:20:23Where does that debate stand
00:20:23right now?
00:20:25Do you think?
00:20:25Again, the very wise
00:20:25Chuck D says it's
00:20:27rock and roll of rock
00:20:27is all the guitar stuff.
00:20:32Roll is everything from gospel
00:20:32to blues
00:20:35to country to soul music,
00:20:35to world music.
00:20:39That's the roll.
00:20:40That's the expansive
00:20:40part of it.
00:20:41So I really so
00:20:41I stole that from Chuck.
00:20:44That's,
00:20:44That's why I think it works.
00:20:46There are nearly 400 inductees
00:20:46in the Rock
00:20:48and Roll Hall of Fame Museum.
00:20:50You could see in Cleveland
00:20:50the whole hall that's there.
00:20:53Do you think induction into
00:20:53the Rock Hall is still as big
00:20:56a deal
00:20:56as it always was in music, or
00:21:00what do you think of it now?
00:21:01Oh, it is
00:21:01still was a big deal.
00:21:03You have people
00:21:03who, are in a Grammy museum.
00:21:06You have people
00:21:06who are in the Blues
00:21:08Hall of Fame, the Soul Music
00:21:08Hall of Fame,
00:21:09the Country Music
00:21:09Hall of Fame. Like Dolly.
00:21:12And it's still an honor.
00:21:13It's it's the highest honor
00:21:13in popular music.
00:21:17And I
00:21:17and I say that
00:21:18with some trepidation
00:21:18because I personally
00:21:20am a jazz fan as well.
00:21:22And I love the NEA
00:21:22Jazz Masters.
00:21:24The only thing that competes
00:21:25with it in
00:21:25my mind is NEA Jazz Master,
00:21:28so I do, in which Miles
00:21:28Davis happens to be both.
00:21:31He happens to be in NEA
00:21:32Jazz Master and and the Rock
00:21:32and Roll Hall of Fame.
00:21:35So I think, to answer
00:21:35your question, Karen, yes,
00:21:39it still has that gravitas.
00:21:40It still has
00:21:40a lot of importance.
00:21:42The let you know that London
00:21:42now wants them
00:21:45to stage the Rock Hall
00:21:45induction ceremony in London,
00:21:49and Nashville wants it,
00:21:49so that's good and bad.
00:21:52That means
00:21:52that the cycle will elongate.
00:21:55I did some research
00:21:55is the Rock Hall
00:21:58induction
00:21:58ceremony has occurred
00:22:00pretty regularly every
00:22:00three years in Cleveland.
00:22:02But if you at London
00:22:02and you at Nashville
00:22:06that that's five years.
00:22:07So we're looking at goodness
00:22:07gracious we're looking at 2029
00:22:11before it's back in Cleveland.
00:22:12You know,
00:22:12I can only do this so long.
00:22:15I was just going to ask, do
00:22:16you feel like
00:22:17the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
00:22:17and Museum is still
00:22:20Ohio centric?
00:22:21It's still
00:22:22Ohio gets the attention or is
00:22:22it become New York centric?
00:22:26Or now we're talking about
00:22:26potentially international.
00:22:29It's around the world.
00:22:30It's always been
00:22:30an international,
00:22:32because of the artists
00:22:32that is brought in.
00:22:34But I still think it's Ohio
00:22:34centric.
00:22:35And the point of fact is that
00:22:35they're expanding 50,000ft,
00:22:40$150 million expansion
00:22:40that's occurring.
00:22:43It's already started.
00:22:44Greg Harris and company
00:22:44got the money.
00:22:46I think they announced it back
00:22:46in April of 2023.
00:22:49They have the money.
00:22:49They're under construction.
00:22:50If you're anybody, you know,
00:22:50your listeners familiar
00:22:53with Cleveland and Rock Hall,
00:22:53it's to the west.
00:22:55And between Cleveland
00:22:56and between the Rock Hall
00:22:56and that science, building.
00:23:00So it'll be kind of
00:23:00like a harbor thing.
00:23:02So the Great Lakes
00:23:02Science Museum.
00:23:03Yeah, the Great Lakes
00:23:03Science museum, that's it.
00:23:05And it's,
00:23:06they're they're expecting
00:23:06that to be open in 2026.
00:23:09So that's exciting.
00:23:10So you're certainly we're
00:23:10looking at 30.
00:23:13It'll be 30 years next year.
00:23:15I actually was there
00:23:15with, George Voinovich.
00:23:18God bless his soul.
00:23:19And, stood on line
00:23:19with Mike Tirico,
00:23:21when we were waiting to get
00:23:21in for the actual inaugural,
00:23:25Rock and Roll
00:23:26Hall of Fame Museum opening
00:23:26back in September of 1995.
00:23:30So this upcoming September of
00:23:30next year will mark 30 years.
00:23:33So they have 30 years
00:23:33worth of stuff
00:23:35they've gotten
00:23:35from these rock.
00:23:37they're ready to, declutter
00:23:37So I'm sure they're
00:23:39and spread
00:23:39some of that stuff out.
00:23:41With the new space,
00:23:41I remember a sound bite from,
00:23:44Governor George
00:23:44Voinovich around that time.
00:23:46Somebody was asking him
00:23:46about,
00:23:48you know, this museum opening,
00:23:48and he said,
00:23:50I don't know
00:23:50anything about rock roll.
00:23:53You know, he was into, polka.
00:23:57So. So. Yeah.
00:23:58But but he was visionary.
00:24:00He knew he knew a good thing
00:24:00when he saw it.
00:24:02And so that was a very wise
00:24:02investment.
00:24:05$2.3 billion since it's
00:24:05open has come to Cleveland
00:24:09in terms of economic benefit,
00:24:09$50 million
00:24:12every time they host
00:24:12the ceremony, and about $240
00:24:16million a year, from people
00:24:16who travel in
00:24:19and out of that museum
00:24:19every day.
00:24:21And yeah, this year sold out
00:24:21concert at the same time
00:24:24as the Guardians
00:24:24were doing their playoff run.
00:24:27So a lot it's
00:24:27still it's still sold out.
00:24:30Absolutely.
00:24:30It's still sold out.
00:24:31This is an interesting museum
00:24:31in that it's not,
00:24:35the inductees,
00:24:35they're not there
00:24:37because they've sold
00:24:37the most records
00:24:38or they're not there
00:24:38because of a specific metric.
00:24:43And fans also can help
00:24:43get their favorite artists
00:24:48into the Rock hall.
00:24:49So it's really a
00:24:49a bigger it's not like, like
00:24:52the Grammy Museum is about
00:24:52how many Grammys you've won.
00:24:54And and there's a connection
00:24:54to success there.
00:24:57And there's a nice rejoinder
00:24:57to that.
00:24:59Peter Frampton actually got in
00:24:59because of fans.
00:25:02And he actually backstage.
00:25:04Thank everybody for the fans
00:25:04who voted him in.
00:25:07And my
00:25:07I think my wife voted many,
00:25:09many times for Janet
00:25:09Jackson back in 2018 or 2021.
00:25:12Whatever. She got it.
00:25:13You got a dog
00:25:13that so fans can, vote.
00:25:16And unlike regular politics,
00:25:16I think they can vote
00:25:18more than once.
00:25:18And it's actually allowed.
00:25:21An edited version of the
00:25:22sold out concert will air
00:25:22on ABC on New Year's Day.
00:25:26And that is it for this week
