Stanley J. Aronoff (R) served in the Ohio Senate for nearly three decades, from 1967-1996. A native of Cincinnati, Aronoff represented Hamilton County in the 8th Senate District. During his career, Aronoff made unsuccessful bids to other public offices, including a run for the Ohio Attorney General seat in the 1974 primary election. In 1978, he won the primary for the 2nd Congressional District but lost in the general election in a close race to Tom Luken. The Republicans gained majority of the Senate in 1985, and when President Paul Gillmor resigned to take a seat in Congress in 1988, Aronoff was elected by his peers as Senate President. He served in that post until his retirement at the end of his term in 1996.
