The State of Ohio - William Saxbe Remembered

For the second week in a row, a major policy initiative has come out in the campaign for governor - Republican candidate John Kasich has proposed the review and revision of regulations in an effort to make the state more business-friendly. But incumbent Democrat Ted Strickland says Kasich's proposal is nothing new. Convicted former congressman Jim Traficant will get another chance to prove he collected enough signatures to be on the ballot. The six-member panel of lawmakers who are hearing about the state's upcoming budget crisis have set up a website where the public can weigh in. Flags were lowered across the state Friday to remember William Saxbe, the former U.S. senator from Ohio who served as attorney general under President Richard Nixon.

This year marks the first time since 1998 that there has been an open seat in the US Senate to represent Ohio, so it was always thought that the contest to win that seat would be aggressive and expensive. After talking about the contest for governor on last week's show, Kevin DeWine and Chris Redfern, the chairs of Ohio's two major political parties, discuss the US Senate race.

While they are the best known and the best funded options for voters, the two major parties aren't the only possibilities to consider on this fall ballot. Other minor party candidates are running in various offices. One of those candidates is libertarian Ken Matesz, who talks about why frustrated voters should consider casting a ballot for him.
