The State of Ohio - The Statewide Ballot

As the clock ticks down the hours till the opening of the polls on November 4, this marathon campaign from the presidential race on down is getting more intense and in some cases frantic. It could be argued that the Issue 6 casino gambling proposal is the most hotly contested issue in Ohio history, and now the state's so-called free market think tank, the Buckeye Institute, is saying the issue amounts to a "gigantic rip off" for Ohioans. But the casino's developer is blasting that criticism.

This election is historic in many ways - for example, it's the first time Ohio voters cast absentee ballots for president without having to provide a reason. And early voters are packing election sites and waiting for hours to cast ballots even before election day.

Polls show the presidential race has a clear leader, but it's getting tighter. Dr. Paul Beck, a professor of political science at Ohio State University and one of the researchers involved in the new Big 10 Battleground Poll, talks about polling. And legal challenges have been going on for weeks. Edward Foley, professor and director of election law at the Moritz College of Law at Ohio State University, talks about what's been happening and what's possible after the vote.

We end this week's program with a trip back to a simpler time. The Ohio Historical Society opens a new exhibit this weekend. It's called Rockwell's America, an interactive display of life-sized recreations of Norman Rockwell's most famous scenes, with dozens of hands-on displays and all 322 of his original covers from The Saturday Evening Post. Connie Bodner, director of education and interpretation services for OHS, and project manager manager Roger Norfleet take us into Rockwell's world.
