The State of Ohio - The Fall Ballot

For the fifth time since he took office, Gov. Ted Strickland has spared the life of a condemned killer. It's a win for controversial former congressman Jim Traficant - he's on the November 2 ballot. No rest for the Obama administration this Labor Day week - VP Joe Biden will be back in Toledo and the President is coming to Cleveland Wednesday. An audit done amid political sniping recommends making the Ohio Lottery Commission a quasi-public entity or eliminating the panel and leaving the director in charge.

There was a rare and some might say ironic sight this week at the offices of the Ohio Education Association - the state's largest teachers union, was the target of a strike by its own disgruntled employees.

It's Labor Day weekend, traditionally the time when the campaigns for the fall ballot really get going. But though this show and the Statehouse News Bureau has been following the candidates for months, this week we begin a more in-depth look at the fall ballot and the individuals running for office. We start with the US Senate, and the Democrat nominated for that office, Lee Fisher. (Note: We had hoped to follow this week's interview with a conversation with the Republican candidate for US Senate, but repeated attempts over the last month to schedule an interview with Rob Portman haven't brought that about.) Next week - the candidates for Secretary of State, Republican Jon Husted and Democrat Maryellen O'Shaughnessy.
