The State of Ohio - The Economy & Poverty

HEADLINES: The massive capital bill is speeding through the Statehouse, but it could hit a roadblock at the governor's office. The $1.5 billion jobs package is a step closer to the ballot, where voters will decide if it's what they think is needed to stimulate the state's economy. There was some emotional debate in the House on a bill that would require the state do all its official business in English. House Democrats have a new member in their caucus - Thomas Heydinger of Plymouth, who was sworn in this week to replace a lawmaker who resigned after an image of a topless woman popped up on his computer during a presentation in a high school classroom. An outspoken state senator who opposed the Great Lakes compact has agreed to back it, now that legislators have approved a constitutional amendment that strengthens private property rights. The Ohio Supreme Court has upheld a 134-year prison sentence against a 24-year-old Columbus man convicted of three home invasions, saying the sentence wasn't cruel and unusual punishment. The justices have also thrown down a first of its kind reprimand against a judge - for taking too long in ruling on cases before his court.

Some mixed news for the Democratic candidates for president in the latest Quinnipiac University poll. The survey shows the leading contender, Sen. Barack Obama, would lose in a head-to-head race with likely Republican nominee John McCain 44 to 40 percent. But Sen. Hillary Clinton beats McCain 48 to 41 percent.

SEGMENT 1: And finally, former Ohio governor Bob Taft. He's been out of office for more than 18 months - after becoming the first Ohio governor convicted in office because of ethics charges related to the Coingate scandal. One of Taft's loudest critics during that scandal was then state senator Marc Dann. Dann is now the former attorney general, having resigned over a sex scandal in his office. That makes some wonder - what does Taft think about what happened at the AG's office?

SEGMENT 2: There's still debate on whether the US economy is in a recession. But many Ohioans say the economic situation isn't good. None of this is news to my guests, who next week will release their annual update on poverty in Ohio. Here to talk about the issue are two of the major players in that report - Bobbie Garber with Community Research Partners, which prepared the report, and Phil Cole with the Ohio Association of Community Action Agencies, which deal with the effects of poverty at the local level.

FEATURE SEGMENT: More than 180 Ohioans have died in Iraq or Afghanistan since 2001. Only five states have lost more men and women in these military actions. This Memorial Day week began here at the Statehouse with a wreath-laying ceremony, honoring the twenty-seven Ohioans who died in military service from April 2007 to last month.
