The State of Ohio - Post-election Analysis

Though the campaigns are over, the analysis rages on. And this week we take you to one of the premier post-election events featuring the best in retrospective, scrutiny, debriefing, opinion and punditry - the Impact Ohio conference.

Almost every session at this year's Impact Ohio conference dealt in some way with the upcoming budget. One featured figuers who've been guests on this show throughout the year - John Begala of the Center for Community Solutions, Gene Krebs from Greater Ohio and Zach Schiller from Policy Matters Ohio, as well as Matt Yuskewich from the Ohio Society of CPAs and Mary McLeary from the Buckeye Institute.

Some of the people charged with dealing with that budget were at a big panel later in the day - Rep. Ron Amstutz (R-Wooster), Sen. John Carey (R-Wellston) Gov. Ted Strickland's state budget director Pari Sabety, and Rep. Vernon Sykes (D-Akron). They talked about what should and could be done about the budget, and just how big the deficit might really be.

Gov. Ted Strickland dropped by with a joke before the keynote speakers took over - Ohio Democratic Party chair Chris Redfern and Ohio Republican Party chair Kevin DeWine. They talked at length about the power of their parties and their organizations, and offered predictions for the next two years.

The week may have started with politics, but it ended with a celebration of a very different kind of public service. Thursday was Veterans Day, and the day before, state lawmakers and the governor met in a rare joint session at Veterans Memorial, to honor nearly 200 people who've received the Ohio Military Medal of Distinction. A few days earlier at Vets Memorial, the inductees into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame Class of 2010 were also honored in a ceremony at Vets Memorial. And this event featured a very special guest - former US Secretary of State and retired Gen. Colin Powell.
