The payday lending industry in Ohio may soon undergo a dramatic change, under a bill that passed the House in a controversial and unusually political session. The bill from Republican representative Chris Widener was described as the nation's toughest crackdown on payday lenders, who process 6.4 million loans worth 3.3 billion dollars each year through 16-hundred locations in Ohio.

Ted Strickland and members of the state school board are meeting privately to talk about a plan to oust state schools superintendent Susan Zelman. The governor's plan would reduce to advisory roles both the current board and the superintendent it hires. Strickland has said that there needs to be a direct line of accountability and responsibility. But some Republicans have seen this as a power grab.
