After months of few specifics from either candidate running for governor, the Republican nominee offered a big proposal about the Ohio Department of Development. President Obama spends some time with a Columbus family, and raising money for Ohio Democrats. A new national study says Ohio's hotly contested partisan races for state Supreme Court seats were the second most expensive in the country during the last decade. The prison sentencing reform guidelines suggested in an independent study unveiled at a bipartisan conference last month has been backed by the American Civil Liberties Union. And a request for clemency from the Ohio killer next in line for execution is rejected.

The summer heat has backed off a bit, but the campaigns for the fall ballot are as hot as ever - because there's less than six weeks before early voting begins.
