The State of Ohio - Obama in Ohio

President Obama is back in Ohio this weekend, along with first lady Michelle Obama.

A new Ohio Poll shows Republican John Kasich holds an eight-point lead over Democratic incumbent Gov. Ted Strickland, and GOP nominee Rob Portman has widened his lead over Democrat Lee Fisher to 22 points.

The state school board plans to request budget increases of more than two percent a year in the next state budget to help pay for planned changes in Ohio's public schools.

The Ohio Supreme Court issued some big rulings this week - deciding that a property tax exemption for public schools does not extend to property leased to a school for profit, and upholding a portion of a state law that places a $10-per-play limit on prizes awarded on skill-based games.

The high court also heard arguments over whether communities can enforce tougher local regulations on gun control than the state's rules, and on a sales tax that was applied to satellite TV providers but not to their cable competitors.

The last big debates of the 2010 campaign season are over. In the US Senate race, Democrat Lee Fisher and Republican Rob Portman met twice in five days for debates last week before the City Club of Cleveland and at COSI in Columbus. And the major party candidates for governor also met in their second and final debate last week. And while their messages didn't change, the tone of their delivery did - each candidate was aggressive and forceful in what they were saying about his own record and about that of his opponent.

The campaigns used the final debate as a chance to bring their volunteers and supporters together for watch parties around the state. One of Kasich's watch parties was at his headquarters in downtown Columbus, and this night featured college Republicans from Ohio State working the phones before the debate. And on the northwest side of Columbus, another debate watch party was going on - organized by the Upper Arlington Progressive Action, which backs Strickland.

There was a different kind of debate this week at the Columbus Metropolitan Club. The entertaining and pointed forum featured Ohio Democratic Party chair Chris Redfern and Republican consultant Terry Casey, being quizzed by Bill Cohen of Ohio Public Radio and Television.
