The State of Ohio - Heart of Democracy Exhibit

Republican Governor elect John Kasich is still filling out his cabinet - Sen. Steve Buehrer will head the Bureau of Workers Compensation, and Bob Blair will lead the Department of Administrative services. Meanwhile, Kasich's incoming agriculture director wants to review a deal arranged by outgoing Gov. Ted Strickland and animal rights activists that would bring tougher laws governing farm animals. As he prepares to leave office, Gov. Strickland has a few things to take care of - including deciding on some 1,200 applications for clemency from Ohio convicts.

One Cuyahoga County Democrat is doing well after the red tide swept Ohio. Ed Fitzgerald, the mayor of the Cleveland suburb of Lakewood, is the first ever incoming Cuyahoga County executive, a job the Plain Dealer describes as "second only to the governor in terms of power and constituency". Fitzgerald talks about creating his new office and putting distance between county government and a massive corruption scandal.

Political junkies know this story - a turbulent, controversial presidential election that's too close to call, with Ohio playing a critical role. The decision goes to the Republican, a hard core Christian conservative with a cowboy swagger defeating a robotic Democrat who likes to talk about global warming. It may sound familiar - but it's also the storyline behind a book by Columbus-based political consultant Greg Haas. He talks about how he wrote the book and why he thinks it's hitting bookshelves at the perfect time.

The hundreds of thousands of visitors who come to the Statehouse each year have a new exhibit to check out - the Heart of Democracy exhibit. It opens just ahead of the holiday season at the Statehouse, with Santa Claus arriving next week by helicopter.
