The State of Ohio - Early Voting October 22, 2010

There are two new polls in the governor's race - one from Quinnipiac University and one from CNN/Time - showing two different contests. A huge pre-election rally starring President and Mrs. Obama brought out an estimated 35,000 people to Ohio State University this past weekend, and another big one is likely ahead - the conservative Tea Party Express will stop in Columbus for a morning visit on Saturday, October 30.

Thousands of Ohioans have already voted during the early voting period, and boards of elections report typical political trends are on display again in the major counties. Less than two weeks remain till we find out what those early voters decided - as well as who will be chosen by those who will do the more traditional thing and vote on election day. Looking ahead to that and more Michael Brady, assistant professor of political science at Denison University in Granville, and Melissa Miller, assistant professor of political science at Bowling Green State University.

This sounds like a familiar story - a turbulent, controversial presidential election where the Democrat is a "robot" who likes to talk about global warming is defeated by a Republican who says he's "God's Will". What follows is a tale of intrigue, gamesmanship and eventually redemption, with plenty of parties, political maneuvering and sex with sharply drawn characters who seem outrageous and yet very familiar and believable. It's the story told in a new political thriller called "The Butcher's Thumb", and the author is longtime political consultant Greg Haas, who knows politics inside out, at the national, state and local level. He talks about why he wrote the book, why it's coming out now and what he hopes readers will take away from the very real-sounding scenarios he creates.
