The State of Ohio - Early Voting in Ohio October 8, 2010

Ohio has eclipsed its own one year execution record by putting 49 year old Michael Benge to death - the eighth killer executed this year. Polls are continuing to show the race for governor is a much closer contest than suggested a few weeks ago. But the Quinnipiac poll continues to show bad news for the Democrat running for US Senate, and good news for the Republican. Newly released campaign finance reports in the governor's race show John Kasich is leading there too.

The first week of early voting in Ohio is in the books, with no major problems. Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner talks about the latest with no-fault absentee balloting and how it might affect overall turnout.

This was debate week in Ohio, with almost every candidate for statewide office meeting up with his or her opponent in a public event - or invited to do so. Democrat Lee Fisher and Republican Rob Portman, the major party candidates for US Senate, were set for three debates in eight days, starting with a debate in Toledo. The candidates for governor met on Thursday - more on that next week. The candidates for auditor and secretary of state also met in debates sponsored by the Ohio News Network, which also produced a debate in a race that's gotten very little attention - the race between incumbent Judith Lanzinger and judge Mary Jane Trapp as one of the six associate justices on the Ohio Supreme Court. The candidates for chief justice, Republican Maureen O'Connor and Democrat Eric Brown, debated in an audio-only event at the Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University.
