State Senators Shannon Jones (R-Springboro) and Charleta B. Tavares (D-Columbus) hold a press conference to announce the introduction of multiple pieces of legislation aimed at fighting Ohio's high rate of infant deaths.
Jones, who Chairs the Senate Standing Committee on Medicaid, Health, and Human Services, was joined by Senator Tavares and other committee members on a statewide tour in 2013 to better understand the infant mortality problem and the needs associated with it and to learn more about local efforts to combat the issue. Senators Jones and Tavares jointly sponsored Senate Bill 198, which designates each October as "Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Awareness Month." The two members rolled out a series of five pieces of legislation, each designed to address a separate part of the infant mortality issue.
The press conference also highlights Moms2B, a unique program to mentor pregnant women in having healthy pregnancies, deliveries, and babies. Dr. Pat Gabbe, the program's clinical director, also spoke. In addition to her role with Moms2B, Dr. Gabbe is also the Principal Investigator at the Center for Perinatal Research for Nationwide Children's Hospital and a faculty member at The Ohio State University.
