Newsdepth - Earth Day

Tuesday was a day for honoring the environment and our earth. Earth Day began more than thirty years ago, on April 22, 1970. The idea was to encourage people to care about the planet. In the northern hemisphere, earth day is observed in the spring, in the southern hemisphere - the fall. But the goal is the same, to raise awareness and promote a healthier Earth. One of the most popular activities on Earth Day is planting trees.

As you know, John McCain is the Republican candidate in the presidential primary election. But who might win the battle for the Democratic ticket is anyone's guess. Our neighbors to the east in Pennsylvania, held their primary elections this past Tuesday. Senator Hillary Clinton won the Democratic majority there, by ten points. So far, Senator Barack Obama leads in the number of states he has won, as well as votes and delegates. However, Clinton's camp believes they will have a larger number of votes in the general election next November.

Pope Benedict the 16th returned home on Sunday after a really busy visit to the U.S. On the final day of his trip, Pope Benedict invited 24 people, rescue workers of September 11 and victim's families, to join him at Ground Zero to pray. That evening he held mass at Yankee Stadium for about 60,000 people. He asked people worldwide to pursue "justice and peaceful co-existence." Before the pope returned to Rome, he declared "may God bless America!"
