Feagler and Friends - Where Will John Demjanjuk Be Buried?

Newsmaker:

John J. Gill, attorney

The death of former Seven Hills resident John Demjanjuk brought to a close a three-decade legal battle in which he was convicted, cleared, then re-convicted as a Nazi-era war criminal. Demjanjuk was found guilty of complicity in the murder of thousands at the Sobibor death camp, sentenced to five years in prison, but then freed to live out the rest of his days as a stateless person. Still to be resolved is whether he'll be buried in Germany or the U.S.

Jackson's School Plan

Several members of Cleveland's legislative delegation say they're prepared to work with Mayor Frank Jackson on his school reform plan. It has run into union opposition because key provisions are similar to the ill-fated Senate Bill 5. Jackson wants to ease restrictions on weeding out poor teachers and more partnerships with charter schools.

Jackson's Lakefront Plan

Cleveland City Council approved the Mayor's lakefront plan which would open city-owned property near Browns Stadium to eventual development. It's the latest in a series of lakefront plans that evolved from different city hall administrations. Jackson feels his has a better chance of succeeding because it resolves questions over location of the port and operation of Burke airport.

Florida Shooting Controversy

Federal and Florida state officials are accelerating the pace of their investigations into the fatal shooting of a black teen by a self-appointed neighborhood watch volunteer who claimed self-defense. The unarmed teen was walking home through a gated neighborhood in Sanford, Florida last month. Under Florida law, the self-defense claim is a powerful one and police have so far refused to act on demands for the volunteer's arrest.
