Tragedy erased the fun of Family Unity Day at Cleveland's Luke Easter Park last weekend. A teenager with a gun shot and killed another teen during a fight several blocks from the event. Three other people were wounded when the shooter fired into a crowd gathered to watch the fight. It happened minutes after the conclusion of a George Clinton concert that highlighted the eighth annual Family Unity Day.

Consultants Earn Healthy Pay:

The county-owned hospital paid out millions of dollars in consulting contracts that went to departing hospital employees in lieu of severance pay. Hospital officials say it's common practice in the health care industry. But Cuyahoga County officials are demanding an accounting.

S.B. 5 Repeal: Yes or No?

Voters might run into a bit of confusion this fall when casting a ballot for or against State Issue Two. Voting "yes" will mean voters wish to retain SB 5's limitations on collective bargaining for public employees. Voting "no" overturns SB 5. Language approved this week by the State Ballot Board is seen as a win for repeal forces since voters are historically inclined to say no to issues worded in a way that might be confusing.

Parking County Cars:

Cuyahoga County government has cut in half the number of employees entitled to drive home in county cars. In prior years, allowing employees full-time use of a government car has been common practice; sometimes the cars were chauffer-driven. But County Executive Ed FitzGerald is forbidding the practice for most employees, including himself.

Bobcat Bash:

Ohio University is the nation's top party school, according to the Princeton Review which surveyed students at nearly 400 U.S. colleges. President Roderick McDavis, who said O-U would rather be known for something else, added the school has taken successful steps to cut down on student drinking and alcohol-related mayhem.
