Roundtable:

Vatican Investigates Church Closings:

Retired New Jersey Bishop John M. Smith has been in Cleveland this week investigating the closing of dozens of churches in the northeast Ohio diocese. Those closings were ordered by Bishop Richard Lennon who says he requested the apostolic visit. Others upset by the closings also petitioned for Vatican intervention and Smith planned to meet with dissident representatives. Smith will submit his findings to the Vatican.

A Sweetheart Deal?:

The state of Ohio and casino owners recently ironed out a deal that'll have the casinos kicking more money into the state kitty. But the Plain Dealer's Brent Larkin complained in a column this week that taxpayers are not getting all they should from the deal; it's casino and horse track owners that are the big winners.

Building Boom:

While the local economy continues to trudge along, still struggling to recover from the effects of the last two recessions, there are billions of dollars worth of construction projects underway or on the drawing board. Some, like the new Innerbelt bridge and the convention center, are being built with public money. Others like extensive residential development in University Circle and the Seidman Cancer Center represent private investment.

Newsmakers:

Larry Benders, Cuyahoga County Development Director; Ed Jerse, county Regional Collaboration Director-the county's newly-enacted charter not only reconfigured county government, it made economic development the primary mission. Benders and Jerse are the point men in that effort and they'll talk with Mr. Feagler about what's happened in the half-year since the new government took office. This segment is part of "Changing Gears: Remaking the Manufacturing Belt" a multi-year project that looks at the future of the industrial Midwest.
