Voters strongly approved a nearly 30 percent increase in the city income tax, which now rises to 2.25%. Residents who sided with city hall acted to preserve city services they've come to rely on, while others thought the increase would force some residents to move out. The increase will add $6-million to the city's coffers annually.

Cinema Copycat?:
Westlake police arrested Scott Smith, 37, of North Ridgeville as he allegedly entered the Crocker Park cinema with a loaded 9mm pistol and several knives. An off-duty police officer confronted Smith after a theater employee became suspicious of the duffle bag he carried. The weapons were inside. The arrest came days after a gunman shot up a Colorado theater, killing 12.
Redistricting Fight to Ballot:
A constitutional amendment to be on the ballot in November would change the way new Ohio legislative districts are drawn. Union-backed groups started circulating petitions not long after majority Republicans drew up districts that heavily favored the GOP.
Cut-Rate Real Estate:
Cuyahoga County hopes to entice developers to buy and re-use its current headquarters building plus the old Ameritrust complex at Ninth and Euclid, the latter of which became an albatross around the neck of the previous administration. The county is also putting eleven other unused properties on the market while seeking downtown space for a new headquarters.
Just Another Day in Sports Paradise:
The Cleveland Indians made news by winning a couple of games. That's not an uncommon occurrence in baseball unless the team is the Indians, who'd lost 11 straight. The Browns were not immune to misfortune. First-round pick Trent Richardson is expected to miss the rest of the pre-season for surgery on a sore knee and defensive back Joe Haden is reportedly facing a four-game suspension for taking a medication banned by the NFL. And some Akronites weren't laughing when a golf writer covering the Bridgestone Invitational Tweeted a disparaging reference about Akron not appropriate for a family webpage. The writer claimed the terminology she used was just a joke.
