Feagler and Friends - State of the State Wrap Up

Newsmaker: Norman Edwards, Former President, Black Contractors Association; Gus Hoyas, President, Hispanic Contractors Association
The City of Cleveland commissioned a $758,000 no-bid contract to the NERA Economic Consulting firm for a racial disparity study on contractor jobs in the area, which ended up writing nearly identical reporters for other cities. And Monday two leaders representing minority contracting groups called the study a fraud and argue that city officials squandered the money for a contract that, they say, does little to illuminate true discrimination in the local construction market.

State of the State

Governor John Kasich used his State of the State address to tout proposals in his budget plan he says will drive Ohio forward. His plan, Ohio's Jobs Budget 2.0, includes a bold overhaul of the state's taxing system that proposes to boost sales tax revenue while trimming income taxes, particularly for small businesses. The Governor also spent a good amount of time making a case for the expansion of Medicaid, which many Democrats have applauded, and some conservatives have scorned.

State of the County

Cuyahoga County Executive, Ed FitzGerald, delivered his third state of the county speech this week. He announced a new major tenant in the medical mart, The Healthcare Information & Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and a new name for the entire facility, (The Global Center for Health Innovation). He also discussed his plans to consolidate many of the county's 48 emergency dispatch services to 4 within the next 10 years to improve efficiency and safety.

Zero Tolerance

Kids nowadays have to be careful about what they say and do or else they could be considered a threat to their school. In lieu of the Newtown Conn shooting, schools across America are cracking down on kids old & young enforcing the Zero Tolerance rules. On the other hand, violent fights continue to break out in certain urban schools (like John Adams HS), and faculty seem to be minimizing the issue and not embracing the Zero Tolerance rules with the older kids.
