Feagler and Friends - Sen. Metzenbaum; Medical Mart

Newsmaker:

Jane Platten, director, Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. More than 400,000 Cuyahoga County voters trekked to the polls for the primary election of March 4th. For the first time since the county replaced punch-card ballots with a new voting method, the system worked smoothly. Some voters expressed concerns about the secrecy of a ballot they marked by hand. Others agonized over whether or not to remove a tear-off tab on the ballot. But the election was relatively trouble-free and the tabulation was timely.

Medical Mart:

Cuyahoga County has come to an agreement to make Cleveland the home of a new medical mart. For medical professionals, it'll serve as a one-stop shopping center for the latest medical hardware and software. For Cleveland, it's a needed economic boost that will also spur construction of a new convention center. Under the agreement the county and medical mart organizers will share in the cost of development.

Goodbye to Senator Metzenbaum:

Retired Senator Howard Metzenbaum died at his Florida home last night at the age of 90. Metzenbaum was a self-made millionaire known for championing the cause of working people. He worked his way up politically through the Ohio House and Senate. He won his U.S. Senate seat in the mid-70s and stayed until his retirement in 1994.

Spitzer Resigns:

New York governor Eliot Spitzer has resigned, effective Monday, in the wake of a sex scandal. He's the first New York chief executive to leave office under a cloud since the impeachment of Governor William Sulzer in 1913. Spitzer was caught soliciting the services of a high-priced prostitute. It was an ignominious fall from grace for a self-styled anti-corruption crusader. Spitzer's resignation opens the office to Lt. Gov. David Paterson, who'll be New York's first black governor and the nation's first blind governor.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductions:

Madonna and John Mellencamp were among the stars inducted this week into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their names will be enshrined at the Rock Hall in Cleveland, although the ceremony was held in New York City. Plans are already being made for next year's induction festivities in Cleveland.
