Feagler and Friends - Recycle, or Else

Newsmaker: Jose C. Feliciano, Chairman, Hispanic Roundtable:

Should the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections be required to print ballots in both English and Spanish? That question is the subject of negotiations underway now between the Board and U.S. Justice Department representatives who earlier called for bilingual ballots. The Board of Elections hopes to avoid the cost of printing such ballots countywide and plans less expensive measures to assist the county's growing Spanish-speaking population.

On Track for Race to the Top:

the federal government is making Ohio one of the places it'll invest millions of dollars in hopes of improving public schools. Ohio is the winner of $400-million in federal Race to the top grant money. It'll be divided among about 500 districts with Cleveland and other urban districts getting the lion's share.

To Sleep, Perchance to Scream:

Some Cleveland visitors are about to feel the pinch. Cuyahoga County leaders are mulling an increase in the county hotel bed tax. The increase would pay operating costs at the new convention center and medical mart. An increase of two per cent would, combined with the sales tax, make hotel taxes in Cleveland the highest in the state.

Recycle, or Else:

Cleveland is about to become one of a growing number of cities that will not only encourage residents to recycle, but fine them if they don't. New high-tech trash carts imbedded with microchips will indicate how often recycling bins are placed on the curb. If the bins are missing, city inspectors will have the right to check trash bins to see if they contain recyclables. If they do, a $100 fine could result.

Boehner's Recovery Plan:

House Republican leader John Boehner used a Cleveland City Club address this week to announce his own plan for an economic turnaround. Boehner, a Cincinnati-area representative, called on President Obama to fire his top economic advisers and replace them with people who have real-world experience. He also called for an extension of Bush-era tax cuts. Democrats shot back that Boehner's ideas are a rehash of failed policies.
