Police Use of Force

An independent agency will review the Cleveland police department's use of force policy. City officials requested the study in the wake of recent brutality allegations.

New polling shows Issue 2 opponents more likely to succeed in their quest to overturn the state's new collective bargaining law. Quinnipiac University's new poll shows the gap between the 'yes' and 'no' sides now at 25%. The same poll also showed Governor Kasich's job approval rating sinking again after a recent jump. And it showed Herman Cain the favorite among Republican voters. State Senator Nina Turner announced this week she's mulling a possible primary challenge to 11th District U.S. Rep. Marcia Fudge.

School Cuts

The Cleveland school board okayed $13 million in cuts to balance the district's budget. Among items to be swamped by the wave of cuts will be the pre-school program and spring interscholastic sports. School officials say the cuts were forced by state belt tightening and the agreement to rehire hundreds of laid-off teachers.

NASA hopes to put space-age ideas on wheels. Glenn Research Center held a workshop this week for automotive experts showing NASA-developed materials and industrial processes that could be put to work in the car industry to save weight, time and money. Among materials they'll demonstrate is a lightweight metal alloy that 'remembers' its shape and returns to it when damaged.
