Newsmaker: Ed Fitzgerald, Cuyahoga County Executive

Lakewood Mayor Ed FitzGerald is getting ready to move into a new office as the first Cuyahoga County Executive. Some experts say he will be the second most powerful political figure in the state - right behind the governor. Right now, Fitzgerald has his hands full, trying to tackle the County's many problems, while helping to invent a new form of government.

Brand New County Exec Tells Lame Ducks to Chill!

Cuyahoga County Exec. Elect, Ed FitzGerald told some lame duck leaders to forget about making last minute personnel moves. Current County Treasurer Jim Rokakis was recently accused of making a couple of inappropriate appointments, and Fitzgerald was quick to put a hold on any new hirings, transfers, or salary increases.

Slow Down, You're Moving Too Fast!

Northeast Ohio taxpayers often challenge their property assessments. It's a time honored process, but this year in Cuyahoga County, it may be as slow as molasses, thanks to the re-shaping of county government. The slowdown only adds to a backlog of cases that's been building for years.

Hurry Up and Wait, and It Will Cost You

A member of Northeast Ohio's Regional Sewer board wants a delay making a settlement with U.S. EPA for a whole year. That delay will more than double sewer bills across the region, and a hike in water rates could come next. The deal would lock the regional sewer district into a $3 billion, 20-year program to meet clean water laws from the Feds.

Trains, Planes and Automobiles

Out with the old and in with the new. Governor-elect John Kasich is asking current Governor Ted Strickland to forget about putting hi-speed rail in Ohio. The current plan is to have hi-speed passenger running from Cleveland to Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton. Gov. Elect Kasich says he will kill the $400 million passenger train project when he takes office, seeing it as a waste of taxpayer money.
