New Cleveland School Boss

After launching a national search for a new CEO, the Cleveland school board this week named a new chief exec whose office was right down the hall. Chief academic officer Eric Gordon will take over July first for interim CEO Peter Raskind who's worked to right the financial ship. Gordon is the chief architect of the district's academic reforms.

Interchange of Heart

A group of Avon landowners got the welcome news this week that they won't be the target of a special assessment for a new I-90 interchange. The Jacobs Group and the city will share the cost of the interchange, but for a time city leaders thought they'd be short a few million dollars and for that they'd planned to look to landowners near the freeway. That changed this week when the mayor announced the funding plan is sufficient as is.

Huron Hospital to Close

Cleveland Clinic will shutter Huron Hospital in East Cleveland, citing a long decline in the number of patients and years of operating deficits. The Clinic plans to open a community health center in East Cleveland this fall. Public officials complain the hospital's closing will result in a decline in the quality of care.

Sowell Trial

Jury selection is underway in the trial of accused serial killer Anthony Sowell, charged in the murders of eleven women whose bodies were secreted in and around his Imperial Avenue home. Questions for prospective jurors centered on their opinions about capital punishment, expected to be the key phase of Sowell's trial. Jury selection could take another week.
