The Cuyahoga County Department of Children and Family Services recently placed a morbidly obese eight-year-old in a foster home because of health concerns related to his condition. The action has re-ignited a national debate over the proper role of public agencies in regulating family affairs. Harvard researchers first kindled the issue over the summer when they suggested government should intervene as a last resort in severe cases of childhood obesity.

Ohio State University hired Ashtabula native Urban Meyer to guide a football program thrown for a loss by months of scandal. Meyer comes to OSU, where he was once an assistant coach, after successful stints at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida, where he won two national championships. Caretaker coach Luke Fickell will remain as a Meyer assistant. Player rule violations led to the firing of popular coach Jim Tressel and the turmoil played a major role in a rare non-winning season for Ohio State. As the Meyer story unfolded, basketball fans got a dose of good news when NBA owners and players reached a tentative agreement that should bring the players back to the hardwood by Christmas day.
