Newsmaker 1: Timothy F. Hagan, former Cuyahoga County Commissioner

In January, Hagan ended a 21-year stint on the Board of Commissioners as the old form of county government gave way to the new. The Commissioners and most elected officers were replaced by county executive/council government that took the reins in the new year. It was now the county executive's job to appoint officials who formerly were elected. Hagan has long been one of Cuyahoga County's Democratic leaders. He once headed the local party as chairman, was appointed county recorder and won his first term as commissioner in 1982. Between then and now he also mounted unsuccessful runs at Cleveland Mayor and Governor. Hagan led the charge to build the new convention center and attached Medical Mart. As he left office, construction was about to begin.

Newsmaker 2: Michael C. DeAloia, author, Lost Cleveland

Some of Cleveland's greatest treasures are gone but not forgotten thanks to DeAloia's new book that provides loving remembrances of once-glittering landmarks. The Hippodrome was an ornate Euclid Avenue showplace that welcomed such performers as Will Rogers and Enrico Caruso. It even featured a swimming pool for water shows popular in the day. Luna Park, known as Cleveland's Fairyland of Pleasure blossomed around 1910, but lost its magic and was shuttered by the Great Depression. The Elysium, near University Circle, was the world's largest indoor ice skating rink when it was built 100 years ago. Lost Cleveland celebrates these and other landmarks.
