Hundreds of Cleveland-area Catholics go the news they'd been waiting for-Bishop Richard Lennon will not appeal a Vatican order directing him to re-open 12 parishes he closed in a recent reorganization. The 12 were among 13 that appealed the closings. It's not yet clear when the churches will re-open.

President Obama and Mitt Romney Visit

The national political spotlight shone on Lorain County this week. President Obama spoke to a private gathering at Lorain County Community College, calling jobs the number one issue of our time. As he spoke, a Romney campaign bus was parked across the street where volunteers placed campaign calls. Romney himself was scheduled for a campaign appearance in Lorain Thursday,

Cleveland School Cutbacks

If general acclamation for a Cleveland school reform plan was a step forward, an announcement this week could be regarded as a step back. School leaders okay-ed a plan to drop 700 teachers, mostly through layoffs, at the end of the school year and the school day will be shortened by nearly an hour next year. The moves are aimed at making up a big chunk of an anticipated deficit. School officials also say they're exploring plans to sell their downtown headquarters building.

Republicans Target Planned Parenthood

Legislative Republicans want to move Planned Parenthood to end of a line of social service agencies that receive federal funding. If they're successful, Planned Parenthood would lose close to $2-million; similar agencies would also lose money. Angry Democratic lawmakers call it another shot in a war on women.
