Universities are more than seats of learning. They're consistently churning out ideas and research that pique the interest of private enterprise with the knowhow to move those ideas into the marketplace. University of Akron, renowned for its work in polymer science and Case Western Reserve University, well-known for research on medical devices and fuel cells are two of the state's leaders in what's known as technology transfer. Mr. Feagler's guests will explain how it works and discuss the impact it might have on northeast Ohio's economic evolution.

Housing Agency Head Indicted

The FBI's probe of corruption in local government has resulted in federal charges against another high-ranking public official. George Phillips-Olivier, chief executive of the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority was arraigned Wednesday on allegations that he accepted bribes in return for awarding lucrative contracts for CMHA work and then lied about it to investigators.

Layoffs at City Hall

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson says impending state budget cuts left him no choice but to lay off up to 400 city workers, including some on the city's safety forces. Jackson says the city expects to lose $36-million when Governor Kasich's austerity budget is enacted. The budget makes drastic cuts to erase a potential deficit of $8-billion.

KSU Student Fee

Call it sweat equity. Kent State University is resurrecting a plan to finance a campus makeover with a new fee for students. KSU wants to put up new classroom buildings and upgrade others and finance the project with a fee that will start at $7 per credit hour, eventually rising to $24. Strickland administration officials shot down a previous trial balloon, objecting to the student fee.
