Sanders to Step Down:

Cleveland schools chief Eugene Sanders will retire effective February first. Sanders didn't offer an explanation for his departure, but he is known to be among the candidates for the presidency of Bowling Green State University, his alma mater. Sanders leaves mere months into an extensive overhaul of the Cleveland system, long one of the state's poorest-performing districts.

Questions Over RTA Fare Jumping Crackdown:

Civil rights advocates say the regional transit authority is unfairly targeting young black riders for failure to pay on the system's Health Line. Figures show the percentage of black fare jumpers being ticketed is higher than the percentage of black riders. Local NAACP and ACLU leaders urged RTA to handle fare jumpers with civil rather than criminal penalties.

Turnpike Pedal to Metal:

Ohio Turnpike operators may raise the highway's speed limit from 65 to 70 miles-an-hour. Highway safety experts are not enthusiastic about anything that gives drivers less time to hit the brakes, but Turnpike board members say the promise of higher speeds will lure truckers who deserted the highway for side roads following the last toll increase.

Au Revoir to Rapid Robert:

Bob DiBiasio, VP, the Cleveland Indians--Indians hall of famer Bob Feller died this week at the age of 92. He spent an entire career with the Indians, winning 266 games on the strength of a blazing fastball and matching competitive fire. He likely would have pushed the win total well over 300 if he hadn't enlisted in the Navy a short time after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Feller spoke with pride of his World War II service and was the most visible and accessible of the Indians alumni.
