Feagler and Friends - Doubts Raised over Building Purchase; Dimora's Travails

Roundtable:

James F. McCarty, reporter, The Plain Dealer; Mike Roberts, freelance journalist.

Cuyahoga Corruption Week:

Former County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora was back in a federal court in Akron this week for a hearing to determine which of his assets the government will seize following last week's conviction on 33 corruption counts. He'll lose part of his public pension and half the value of his Independence house once it's sold. And he'll return to court in July for sentencing. Dimora was found guilty late last Friday after nearly a week of jury deliberations following a trial in which his attorneys presented little evidence in his defense. Dimora himself did not testify.

Ameritrust Doubts:

Cuyahoga County executive Ed FitzGerald says the county will investigate the purchase of a downtown office building, with an eye toward possible legal action. Years ago, the county bought the former Ameritrust tower and bank building at the corner of Euclid and East 9th intending to move county offices there. Several figures involved in the deal, including Dimora, were swept up in the corruption dragnet, casting suspicion on the building deal.

New Cloud over Afghanistan:

Tentative plans to draw down U.S. forces in Afghanistan have been thrown into disarray by the death of 16 civilians at the hands of an American soldier who allegedly stalked and killed the victims in their homes.
The U.S. has apologized for the incident and vowed prosecution of the attacker.

Special Guest: Anthony J. Coyne, chair, Cleveland City Planning Commission:

The city is seeing an almost unprecedented building boom. A new tower is rising on the Flats East Bank, new student housing is going up at Cleveland State University which has had its own boom in recent years; housing, offices and a new art museum are going up fast near University Circle. You can get to University Circle on a new bus routed down a refurbished Euclid Avenue lined with new construction. How do we maintain the momentum?
