Sowell Case, What Now?

The jury found accused serial killer Anthony Sowell guilty in the murders of eleven women found at his Imperial Avenue home. He was guilty of 82 counts in all. Now, the same jury returns next week for the sentencing phase of the trial. Seven women and five men will decide if they should recommend the death penalty for Sowell, a recommendation that Judge Dick Ambrose would not be obligated to follow.

Debt Ceiling Floors Congress

Debate over raising the federal government debt ceiling might continue through the weekend and into early next week when a Tuesday deadline looms for taking the action or risking default. The Republican House majority struggled to establish its own consensus with the knowledge that any deficit reduction plan it agrees to will face opposition in the Democrat-controlled Senate.

Newsmaker: Rev. Marvin McMickle

The longtime pastor of Antioch Baptist Church is moving on soon to become president of the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in Rochester, NY, a Protestant seminary. McMickle has been at Antioch Baptist since 1987 and has been a force in both religious and civic life in Cleveland. Three times, he tried to launch a political career with runs at the U.S. House and Senate, but all three failed. He's served on many boards and commissions, including the trustee board at Cleveland State University and he's held visiting faculty positions at numerous colleges and universities, all while serving as spiritual leader of one of Cleveland's largest black churches.
