Domestic Partner Benefits

Cuyahoga County leaders are thinking about extending health care benefits to the domestic partners of county employees, both gay and heterosexual. The city of Cleveland recently began offering domestic partner benefits. For more than two years, Cleveland and Cleveland Heights have maintained domestic partner registries.

School Report Cards

The state of Ohio this week made public its school report cards for the 2010-11 school year. The report cards are a broad gauge of the progress local school systems are making in improving student learning and closing racial achievement gaps. Cleveland public schools dropped a major category while Akron's level remained unchanged.

Voting Law Changes Spark Debate

Secretary of State Husted ordered local elections boards, including Cuyahoga's, to end mass mailings of absentee ballots. His order is consistent with a new state law that forbids such mailings. Cuyahoga County officials are considering an end-run in which the county, not the elections board, would do the mailing. Meanwhile, Democrats have launched a referendum drive aimed at repeal of the new voter law.

Flash Mob Call to Mall

Wannabe hip-hop star Machine Gun Kelly and several hundred of his closest 'homies' crowded into SouthPark mall for reasons not quite clear to police, who arrested Kelly and charged him with disorderly conduct for organizing a flash mob. Viral video of the incident put Strongsville on the map and generated national publicity for Kelly.

Sowell Home Not Ghoul-Proof

internet surfers can buy a piece of Cleveland infamy if they're willing to shell out $25 for a gram of dirt. The website serialkillersink.net is selling dirt purportedly dug from Anthony Sowell's Imperial Avenue home. Sowell was convicted last month of killing eleven women at his home. Sowell dirt is one of dozens of 'murderabilia' offered for sale.
