Politics Roundup

Democratic candidates in the 9th Congressional district held a rancorous debate this week at the Cleveland City Club. Longtime representatives Dennis Kucinich and Marcy Kaptur traded jabs over TV spots and voting records. Republican Josh Mandel pulled out of a City Club debate among the large field of candidates for the U.S. Senate nomination. Earlier, Mandel had backed out of a planned joint Akron appearance with Senator Sherrod Brown. In Arizona, Republican presidential candidates debated for the last time before the Super Tuesday primaries that will include Ohio.

Pool Policy Treads Water

Cuyahoga Falls officials have not yet decided whether they'll offer a family pool membership to a gay couple. A local couple requested the family discount after being legally married in Washington D.C. But city officials balked saying they're not legally required to do so because gay marriage is not recognized by Ohio law. At the same time, the city's legal officer says there's nothing prohibiting the discount. The debate is still afloat.

Pit Bulls Get New Leash on Life

Ohio pit bulls have lost their status as vicious dogs under a new state law. Now, dogs won't be classified as vicious unless they've demonstrated such behavior. Dog owners had long lobbied for the new law. Now, dogs exhibiting untoward behavior can be classified in an ascending scale that includes 'nuisance,' 'dangerous,' and 'vicious.'

Miscellany

Federal agents are accusing a Cleveland Heights woman of trying to hire a killer to dispatch someone wearing fur. The feds say Meredith Lowell, a would-be animal rights activist, posted a Facebook notice soliciting a hit while she watched. Agents say they caught on long before the deal could be consummated. Democrats weren't laughing when Ohio House Speaker Bill Batchelder told an old joke with President Obama in the punch line. Said Batchelder, "The liberals are asking us to give Obama more time. And I think 25-to-life would be a good start." Democrats demanded a retraction. Batchelder says he has no intention of apologizing.
