Newsmaker #1: Eric Gordon, CEO, Cleveland Metropolitan School District

After a national search, Gordon, the district's chief academic officer, was Mayor Jackson's selection as the new chief exec. Gordon, 40, is the chief architect of the district's transformation plan, the blueprint just being implemented when former CEO Eugene Sanders announced his retirement. Gordon assumes command of a shrinking school district which ranked 'continuous improvement' in the most recent state report card on student progress. He's working under a one-year contract.

Construction on Cleveland's new Innerbelt bridge has officially started but for motorists, the most noisome phase of the project is just ahead. Ramps that carried motorists to and from the Innerbelt have, in some cases, been shut down. Others, like the eastbound I-90 ramp to Carnegie Avenue, will have limited access. Traffic will be squeezed into fewer lanes. All that will lead to months of bottlenecks while a new Innerbelt span is built just north of the old. Mr. Feagler talks with a member of the bridge design-build team about the work that's ahead and the best way to avoid the jams.

Lack of sleep is increasingly being viewed as an ailment with potentially serious consequences. Sleep loss can contribute to physical problems like heart disease and mental impairment and it's been implicated in numerous high profile accidents, such as the grounding of the Exxon Valdez in 1989. Drowsy driving is blamed for 100,000 accidents yearly and 28% of Americans admit to nodding off, however briefly, at the wheel.
