A New Downtown Blueprint

Cleveland's new convention center is all but finished, ahead of schedule and under budget, according to its developers. Now city and county leaders say it's time to move ahead with projects that will complement the new building and adjoining global health innovation center. Mayor Jackson and County Executive FitzGerald announced plans to build a new hotel on the footprint of the current county administration building and to construct a pedestrian bridge intended to move people from the downtown bluff to the Lake Erie waterfront. The officials say the convention center tax is producing enough money to provide seed money for the new projects.

OSU President to Step Down

High-profile president Gordon Gee says he'll retire at the end of the month leaving the post that made him one of the highest paid college presidents in the land. Gee's announcement followed by a few days the revelation of off-the-cuff that some Catholics took as insulting though Gee said he meant them to be humorous. Ohio State's trustee chairman called Gee's leadership "transformational."

Return of $4 Gas

When they're not caught in the Captain America traffic jam, motorists have been feeling pain at the pump as gas prices have topped the four dollar mark in many places. The problem is mostly in the Midwest where mechanical problems at refineries have slowed or stopped gasoline production. Crude oil is plentiful and prices are below $100 per barrel. Analysts think prices will ease once the refinery problems are fixed.

Newsmaker: Joseph A. Marinucci, president and CEO, Downtown Cleveland Alliance
Downtown business leaders hope to create new buzz and a new identity for North Coast Harbor, the area bordered by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, FirstEnergy Stadium and the Ninth Street pier. The Alliance opened an online conversation in recent days to solicit opinions about features and activities people would like to see in the downtown connection to the lake.
