The former Ravens and Browns owner will be remembered for different things in different cities. Cleveland will forever remember him as the man who moved the beloved Browns to Baltimore. In Baltimore, he's the man who returned football to a city where the Colts stole away under the cover of darkness. Around the league, he's remembered as one of the driving forces behind creation of Monday Night Football. Modell died Thursday at the age of 87.
Plain Dealer Publisher Quits
Terrance C. Z. Egger took a look at the newspaper landscape and decided it was time to do something else. Egger says he might take a crack at teaching after the leaves the newspaper early next year. The newspaper landscape is increasingly inhospitable as readers turn to multiple sources for news. Just this week, the Journal Register Company filed for bankruptcy. It's the parent company of the Lorain Morning Journal and the Lake County News Herald.
Democratic Convention
Democrats wrapped up their quadrennial pachyderm roast in Charlotte, NC this week. Speakers like ex-President Clinton and former Ohio Governor Ted Strickland delivered quotable lines. Clinton described Republican Mitt Romney as 'someone who will double down on trickle down.' Strickland speculated if Romney were Santa Claus he'd fire the reindeer and outsource the elves.
No Snitches in Steubenville
Police complain they've hit a wall of silence in their attempt to build a case against a pair of suspected rapists. Police accused two teens of raping a 16-year-old girl from across the river in West Virginia. Both teens are members of the local high school football team and, as such, are local celebrities possibly shielded by friends and a broader community of fans.
Newsmaker: Les Roberts, local mystery writer
Roberts has returned with a new installment of his popular series of novels featuring Cleveland private detective Milan Jacovich. In the 16th book in the series, Whiskey Island, Jacovich and his young associate are trying to find out who's taking potshots at city councilman Bert Loftus, who's been accused in a wide-ranging public corruption case that'll seem very familiar to locals who've been following the Jimmy Dimora case.
