Feagler and Friends - A Roll of the Dice for Downtown Cleveland

Roundtable:

Mark Naymik, Metro columnist, The Plain Dealer; Patrick Shepherd, founder, Cleveland Stonewall Democrats; Bill Livingston, sports columnist, The Plain Dealer.

Deal the Cards and Roll the Dice:

Large crowds showed up for this week's opening of the Horseshoe Casino in the former Higbee's building on Public Square. It's the first of four Ohio casinos to open its doors to the public. The 24-hour operation is expected to draw upwards of five million visitors annually and the town's business leaders hope some of them will spill over into other attractions.

Legislators Create New Controversy:

Gov. Kasich signed a law this week repealing most of a hotly-debated set of election rules that spurred a Democrat-led referendum drive. Lawmakers left intact a restriction that bars in-person absentee voting on the weekend before the election. Democrats objected saying this will keep some voters away. They're also threatening a lawsuit to keep the referendum alive. In another action, Republicans withdrew the section of a budget bill that would have required drug tests for welfare applicants.

Obama on Gay Marriage:

President Obama says he's in favor letting same-sex couples exchange wedding vows. His recent pronouncement came at the urging of gay rights groups and introduces a wedge issue into an election he's said should hinge on the economy.

Cavs, Browns, Indians: Plenty of Upside:

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving played up to the promise of a number one draft choice and was named the NBA's Rookie of the Year. Irving averaged 18 points and five assists per game last season while leading all rookies in field goal percentage. Meanwhile, first round NFL draft choices Brandon Weedon and Trent Richardson were impressive in the Browns rookie camp. Weedon is expected to mount a strong challenge to assume Colt McCoy's starting slot and Richardson is a welcome addition to an offensive backfield that didn't have a clear starter. Almost a quarter way through the season, the Indians are in first place in the AL Central, the only team in the division with a record north of .500.

Kucinich: No Washington Run

Longtime Cleveland Congressman Dennis Kucinich says he's decided against running for a House seat in Washington. Instead he'll continue his advocacy for liberal causes outside of Congress. He's wrapping up his eighth term in Congress after losing a Democratic primary race to Marcy Kaptur.
