John Churchill is secretary of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, the nation's oldest academic honorary society. As secretary, Churchill is the chief executive officer and the head of its national office. Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa's purpose is to advocate and recognize excellence in the study of the liberal arts and sciences. The organization has 280 chapters on college and university campuses and over a half-million living members.

Churchill was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa while attending Rhodes College. He would then go on to study as a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford before earning a Ph.D. from Yale University in 1978.
