In the 112th Congress, Rogers was appointed Chairman of the Intelligence Committee for his experience and personal interest in national security. The panel oversees the 17 agencies that make up the U.S. intelligence community, including operations and budgetary oversight, and it is the primary panel responsible for overseeing implementation of the intelligence community restructuring.

Before his election the the House, Mike Rogers served as U.S. Army officer/company commander (1985-88), an FBI Special Agent investigating public corruption as a member of the Chicago Bureau's organized crime unit (1988-94), and as a member of the Michigan State Senate (1995-2000) where he served as majority floor leader (1999-2000).
