Manufacturing and the Lessons of the Automotive Recovery
Most Americans believe that restoring America's manufacturing preeminence would be a key step forwards towards national economy vibrancy -- and the recovery of the American auto industry is one of the biggest manufacturing success stories of the past few years. But there are important lessons for manufacturing policy in the near collapse, as well as in the revival, of America's iconic industry.
Carl Pope is also the author of "Strategic Ignorance: Why the Bush Administration is Recklessly Destroying a Century of Environmental Progress." In 2006, Pope, along with labor leaders, announced the formation of the United Steelworkers' and Sierra Club's Blue/Green Alliance.
Bob King, President of The United Auto Workers
Bob King was elected UAW President in June, 2010. Known for his activism and passionate belief in social and economic justice, King also served three terms as a UAW Vice President. First assigned to lead the union's National Organizing Department in 1998, he assisted more than 80,000 workers in organizing with the UAW and pioneered neutrality and majority signup agreements.
A 1968 graduate of the University of Michigan, King received his law degree in 1973 from the University of Detroit. He's a U.S. Army veteran, a life member of the NAACP and a Michigan Democratic Party precinct delegate.
Jim Tetreault, Director of Manufacturing, Ford North America
James Tetreault was appointed Vice President, North America Manufacturing, effective December 1, 2008. In this role, Tetreault leads Ford's North America Manufacturing operations and drives the company's continued efforts to improve manufacturing flexibility and efficiency in North America as it retools several truck factories to launch a host of smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles.
Just prior to this position, Tetreault served as Vice President, Manufacturing, Ford of Europe, a position he held since 2005. In Europe, he was responsible for all European vehicle and powertrain manufacturing operations including Manufacturing Planning and Logistics and the European Ford Land facility management for Ford plants in Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, Romania, Russia, Turkey and the UK. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Sciences from the University of Michigan in 1978.
