City Club of Cleveland - Stanford R. Ovshinsky, CEO, Ovshinsky Innovations LLC

Stanford R. Ovshinsky is the co-founder of Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (ECD), the company he founded in 1960 with his late wife Iris Ovshinsky. Stanford Ovshinsky is the primary inventor of ECD's technologies.

Ovshinsky was born in Akron, Ohio, where he graduated from high school and from trade school as a machinist. His first invention, in the early 1940s, was an automated lathe that became widely used. In the early 1950s, while working as research director of an auto parts manufacturing company, he experimented with switches that worked like neurons (brain cells). Since the brain does not require ordered structures to use energy and store information, Ovshinsky reasoned that engineered energy-information systems did not need them either.

He began the field of nanostructures for a large number of applications in the early 1950s. He has formed an independent new company called Ovshinsky Solar LLC, a wholly owned division of Ovshinsky Innovation LLC, in order to accelerate his work in energy and information that will lead to basic solutions for pollution, climate change gases and wars over oil. His objective now is to make photovoltaics at a lower cost than burning fossil fuel.
