The Catholic Health Association was founded as an organization through which facilities and their religious congregations could work together to achieve success. In 1914, the Catholic health ministry leaders came together to respond to technological advances that were changing health care delivery in the United States. the goal was to make plans for transforming the delivery of health care in Catholic hospitals. CHA remains dedicated to serving the nation's Catholic health care organizations and supporting the strategic directions of mission, ethics and advocacy.

Currently, the CHA is working to ensure that regulations implementing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act respect the dignity of all people from conception to natural death and that health reform legislation will be broadened in the future to benefit immigrants and all those on the margins of society.
