City Club of Cleveland - High School Debate

This year's debaters will be:

Omar Diab, Hawken School

Vinay Prasad, University School

The topic is:

Resolved: The United States ought to submit to the jurisdiction of an international court designed to prosecute crimes against humanity

Each spring, The City Club is pleased to host the Annual High School Debate Championship. The High School Debate Championships are a City Club tradition going back more than 20 years. The debate finalists engage in a formal Lincoln-Douglas style of debate, where presentations of affirmative construction, cross examination, negative construction, and rebuttals are strictly timed and the contestants judged on logical, creative, and persuasive arguments.

The debate championship enjoys continued sponsorship from Baker Hostetler LLP, Counselors at Law. Baker Hostetler sponsors the debates in memory of Patrick J. Jordan, a skilled and successful trial lawyer who was highly regarded by his colleagues and throughout the community before his untimely death in 1995. Mr. Jordan was a champion debater at St. Ignatius High School and joined Baker in 1985, becoming a partner in 1991. Baker has had a long and proud affiliation with The City Club. Founding partner Newton D. Baker presided over the first meeting of The City Club in 1912.

All City Club members and friends are encouraged to attend this year's high school debate championship on March 13 at noon. More details can be found on page two of this newsletter or at www.cityclub.org.
