Broad & High - The Columbus River Story

The Columbus River Story

Downtown Columbus is changing its profile with new parks along the riverfront. We'll give you two views of the river story - first we'll revisit the flood of 1913 that defined its course, and then we'll give you a sneak preview of the Scioto Greenways Project that will add 33 acres of parkland in 2014.

Ladies of Longford

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with the Celtic sounds of The Ladies of Longford. Celebrating more than a dozen years in the local music scene of Columbus, the five women who make up the band often infuse elements of country and rock into their songs, creating a unique blend of both traditional and contemporary Irish styles. The family of founding member Hilda Doyle hails from County Longford, Ireland, from whence the band gets its name.

Fresh Artists

From WHYY in Philadelphia

In response to decreased funding and cuts in academic arts programming, a group of Philadelphia art teachers formed Fresh Artists, a non-profit organization that introduces students to art-making and philanthropy. Children create and then donate pieces of artwork, which are then given as tokens of thanks to those who invest money into the inner-city school system. One art teacher collaborated with Fresh Artists to create a program called Fresh Palates to Palettes, which allows students from disadvantaged neighborhoods to experience firsthand the relationship between fine art and culinary art.

Art for Industry: Textile Design in the Modern Age

From RMPBS in Denver

This exhibit of textiles-in-transition was recently on display in Denver, Colorado. During World War II, textiles reflected the austerity of the time with quiet and simple designs. But after the war, a sense of hope and rebuilding infused the arts reflecting a dramatic shift in style. The result was a bold explosion of color, shape and pattern unlike what was produced by the fabric industry before and which came to define mid-century design. These modern and avant-garde textiles are visually striking and continue to influence fabric designers today.
