All Sides with Ann Fisher - 7-18-2017: Antartica's Larsen C Ice Shelf Breaks Off

Play

The collapse of Antarctica's Larsen C ice shelf could be the beginning of a great threat to Antarctica and the rest of the world. The break-off could be followed by many others, resulting in warmer temperatures in the Antarctic and possibly raising sea level around the world. This warming would allow non-native plants and animals into the area to compete with the native species.

Today we are talking about the impacts of the Larsen C break-off on ecosystems and the rest of the environment.

Guests:
Ian Howat, glaciologist, professor and investigator of glacier dynamics at the Byrd Polar & Climate Research Center, Ohio State University
Pierre Comizzoli, staff scientist at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute
