Author Zane Grey was born here in 1872 and was raised at this site in Zanesville. Grey established the western novel as a twentieth century American literary genre. Originally trained as a dentist, he began writing full-time in 1905 after his marriage to Lina Elise "Dolly" Roth, who served as his editor and agent. Grey's novels feature rich western imagery and highly romanticized plots with moral overtones, inspiring scores of imitators. Of his more than 60 books, "Riders of the Purple Sage" is his best-known work. In addition to being an author, Grey was the holder of ten world records for large game fishing. He died in 1939 at his home in Altadena, California.
