00:00:12>>I WANTED TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR PRESENCE HERE
00:00:14TODAY. IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. WE ARE HERE TO
00:00:17HONOR 51 YOUNG PEOPLE. AND DID I SAY 51 YOUNG
00:00:20PEOPLE? FOR THOSE THAT DON'T KNOW, THIS IS THE
00:00:29LARGEST Y.L.F. WE'VE EVER HAD HERE IN THE STATE
00:00:32OF OHIO. SO I WANTED TO COMMEND ALL OF YOU.
00:00:38IN THE BEGINNING OF THE WEEK, I CHALLENGED THE
00:00:45YOUNG PEOPLE. I SAID, ONE OF THE THINGS I WANT
00:00:49YOU TO DO IS I WANTED YOU TO -- DOES ANYBODY
00:00:51REMEMBER WHAT I SAID? CARPE DIEM, SEIZE THE DAY.
00:00:54WHAT I WAS ABLE TO SEE OVER THE LAST FEW DAYS
00:00:58IS YOUNG PEOPLE DOING EXACTLY THAT.
00:01:02I WAS ABLE TO SEE THEM FINDING, DISCOVERING WHO
00:01:07THEY WERE, DEVELOPING A VOICE FOR THEMSELVES.
00:01:11NOT BEING DEFINED BY THEIR DISABILITY. UNDERSTANDING
00:01:16THAT THEY ARE SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT.
00:01:20UNDERSTANDING THAT THEY HAVE A LOT TO CONTRIBUTE
00:01:23TO SOCIETY. SO I'M VERY PROUD OF EACH AND EVERY ONE
00:01:26THAT WAS HERE THIS WEEK. AND I ENJOYED MYSELF.
00:01:35I WOULD BE REMISS IF I DID NOT MENTION A FEW SPECIAL
00:01:38PEOPLE WHO MADE THIS WEEK EXTREMELY POSSIBLE.
00:01:42WE HAVE AN OUTSTANDING SPEAKER. I WANT TO GIVE HIM
00:01:44AN OPPORTUNITY TO EAT A LITTLE BIT BEFORE HE GETS UP
00:01:48HERE. I WOULD BE REMISS IF I DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THE
00:01:51STAFF OF GCPD. IF YOU COULD PLEASE STAND, DONNA,
00:01:57STAND. SHE'S DONE A FANTASTIC JOB. PAM AND SCOTT,
00:02:10IF YOU COULD ALSO STAND. THERE'S A
00:02:19GENTLEMAN THAT IS NOT ACTUAL STAFF MEMBER OF GCPD,
00:02:24BUT HE HAS BEEN INVOLVED WITH Y.L.F. OVER THE LAST
00:02:2914 YEARS, FAITHFULLY. WHENEVER WE ASK HIM TO STEP IN,
00:02:34HE'S ALWAYS THERE. HIS NAME IS REGGIE SMITH. WITHOUT
00:02:48REGGIE, THIS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE TODAY.
00:02:53I AM EXCITED ABOUT THAT. I AM EXCITED THAT HE HAD
00:02:55AGREED TO PARTICIPATE. WE JUST HAD A WONDERFUL TIME.
00:02:59TYSON, I HATE TO DO THIS TO YOU. IT IS TRADITION WITH
00:03:11THE YOUTH LEADERSHIP FORUM THAT EVERY YEAR, WE
00:03:14HAVE TWO YOUNG PEOPLE, OR AT LEAST ONE YOUNG PERSON,
00:03:18GET UP AND INTRODUCE OUR SPEAKER. I PROMISE I WILL GIVE
00:03:21YOU TIME TO EAT AFTERWARDS. I GUESS WE HAVE A
00:03:27PROCLAMATION. DO YOU WANT TO DO IT NOW? OH,
00:03:36WONDERFUL. WE HAVE A PROCLAMATION. IF THAT'S OKAY,
00:03:42I WILL STEP ASIDE AND ALLOW REPRESENTATIVE GARLAND TO
00:03:46PRESENT THAT PROCLAMATION. REPRESENTATIVE GARLAND?
00:03:52
00:03:58
00:04:03>>JUST QUICKLY, THIS GOES TO THE YOUNG WOMAN THAT
00:04:07I HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET TODAY, AND I KNOW
00:04:08SHE'S HAD A WONDERFUL TIME AT THE CONFERENCE AND
00:04:12THE LEADERSHIP. I KNOW SHE'S GRADUATING AND GOING
00:04:17TO BIGGER AND BETTER THINGS. BIANCA ALLEN, I WOULD
00:04:21LIKE TO PRESENT YOU WITH THIS.
00:04:27
00:04:33
00:04:39
00:04:45
00:04:47>>AT THIS TIME, I WOULD LIKE TO BRING TO THE STAGE
00:04:51MARY AND CHRISTIAN. THEY WILL INTRODUCE OUR SPEAKER.
00:04:57
00:05:03
00:05:09
00:05:15
00:05:21
00:05:25>>ALL RIGHT, MARY.
00:05:27>>I WOULD LIKE TO BRING UP TYSON GENTRY, OHIO STATE
00:05:32FOOTBALL PLAYER. HIS NUMBER WAS 24. HE'S GOT HIS
00:05:39BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN SPEECH AND HEARING, GOING TO GET
00:05:56HIS MASTER'S DEGREE, AND LET'S GIVE A NICE ROUND OF
00:06:05APPLAUSE FOR TYSON.
00:06:11
00:06:17
00:06:18>>THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I'M NOT
00:06:22SURE IF EVERYBODY CAN SEE ME. I DON'T WANT TO HIDE
00:06:24BEHIND THE PODIUM TOO MUCH. I WILL COME FORWARD A
00:06:27LITTLE BIT. CAN EVERYBODY HEAR ME OKAY? GREAT. FIRST
00:06:30OFF, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ASKING ME TO SPEAK TODAY.
00:06:33I AM EXTREMELY HONORED. IT IS AMAZING TO SEE SO MANY
00:06:39SMILING FACES AND PEOPLE OUT THERE WILLING TO CONTRIBUTE
00:06:44AND GIVE BACK. AGAIN, JUST KIND OF WHAT'S BEEN SAID SO
00:06:49FAR IS THAT THERE REALLY IS SO MUCH THAT EVERYONE HERE
00:06:56CAN CONTRIBUTE TO SOCIETY AND TO PEOPLE IN NEED.
00:06:58SO I THINK THAT DESERVES A ROUND OF APPLAUSE ALONE.
00:06:59SO THANK YOU, EVERYONE, FOR TAKING THE TIME.
00:07:03BASICALLY TODAY, I JUST KIND OF WANT TO GO OVER A
00:07:11LOT OF WHAT I'VE LEARNED SINCE MY INJURY. I HONESTLY
00:07:14HOPE THAT THE MAJORITY OF YOU HERE HAVE ALREADY
00:07:18HEARD A LOT OF WHAT I'M GOING TO SAY, BECAUSE, AGAIN,
00:07:21IT IS JUST REENFORCING MESSAGES. IT IS JUST POSITIVE
00:07:26WORDS THAT YOU SHOULD HEAR ON A DAILY BASIS AND
00:07:29YOU SHOULD TRULY BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN GIVE BACK
00:07:32AND HELP ANYBODY THAT NEEDS HELP. AGAIN, IT DOESN'T
00:07:37MATTER IF YOU HAVE A DISABILITY. THERE ARE SO MANY
00:07:40THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO. AS YOU CAN SEE, I KNOW
00:07:43THERE IS AN INTERPRETER NEXT TO ME. I TOOK SIGN LANGUAGE
00:07:46FOR FOUR QUARTERS AT OHIO STATE, SO I LOVE SIGN LANGUAGE.
00:07:50IT WAS GREAT LEARNING ABOUT THE CULTURE AND
00:07:53LEARNING THE LANGUAGE. MY FIANCEE ALSO TOOK FOUR
00:07:54QUARTERS OF SIGN LANGUAGE AND WANTS TO DO
00:07:56INTERPRETING DOWN THE ROAD, AS WELL. AS I WAS WRITING
00:08:01MY SPEECH AND I SAW THE DVD FROM LAST YEAR, THAT
00:08:03THERE WAS GOING TO BE INTERPRETERS HERE, A SMILE CAME
00:08:07ACROSS MY FACE. I HAVE TO DO THIS. BUT MY FAVORITE SIGN
00:08:11IS TURTLE. YES, I JUST LIKE THAT SIGN. IF YOU DON'T KNOW
00:08:15THE SIGN FOR TURTLE, IT IS ONE OF THE BEST. I JUST THINK
00:08:19IT'S PERFECT. I HAD TO SAY THAT. OKAY. A LITTLE BACKGROUND
00:08:23ON MYSELF. I GRADUATED FROM PERKINS HIGH SCHOOL,
00:08:30WHICH IS IN SANDUSKY OHIO STATE, UP BY CEDAR POINT,
00:08:33IF YOU AREN'T FAMILIAR. IN 2004. AND I WALKED ON AT
00:08:37ON OHIO STATE AS A PUNTER IN THE FALL OF 2004.
00:08:41IT WAS A DREAM COME TRUE. I WAS SO HONORED AND JUST
00:08:46AMAZED I WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY FOR SUCH
00:08:49A GREAT UNIVERSITY AND SUCH A GREAT COACH. AGAIN,
00:08:52IT WAS A DREAM COME TRUE. I WAS ON THE TEAM FROM
00:08:582004 THROUGH THE 2008 SEASON. AND I HAD THE PRIVILEGE
00:09:03OF PLAYING WITH SOME GREAT GUYS. AGAIN, IT WAS AN
00:09:09AMAZING DREAM COME TRUE. IN THE SPRING OF 2006, IT WAS
00:09:15MY -- THE END OF MY SOPHOMORE YEAR. WE HAD AN
00:09:19INTER-SQUAD SCRIMMAGE. THAT'S BASICALLY, THEY JUST
00:09:22DIVIDE THE TEAM UP, AND WE SCRIMMAGE EACH OTHER.
00:09:28DURING A PLAY, I WENT UP FOR A CATCH AND WAS
00:09:32TACKLED IN THE FIELD -- OR ON THE FIELD, AND JUST THE
00:09:38WAY I HIT THE GROUND, IT WAS KIND OF A FREAK ACCIDENT,
00:09:41I BROKE MY NECK AND WAS PARALYZED FROM THE NECK
00:09:42DOWN INSTANTLY. AGAIN, IT WASN'T SOMETHING THAT
00:09:44WAS A DIRTY PLAY OR SOMETHING THAT I HAD ANY ANGER
00:09:48TOWARDS. IT WAS ACTUALLY KIRK HOLMAN THAT TACKLED
00:09:51ME. TRUTH BE TOLD, HE FELT WORSE ABOUT THE WHOLE
00:09:57THING THAN I DID. HE HAD A HARD TIME AFTERWARDS.
00:10:01RIGHTLY SO. WE ARE ALL TEAMMATES. WE ARE ALL FAMILY.
00:10:06YOU NEVER WANT TO HURT A FAMILY MEMBER. SO HE WAS
00:10:08JUST ABSOLUTELY TORN UP. AND HONESTLY, THAT WAS HIS
00:10:13FRESHMAN YEAR. HE GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL EARLY
00:10:17AND CAME ONTO THE TEAM SO HE COULD LEARN THE PLAYS,
00:10:20LEARN THE DEFENSE SO HE WOULD HAVE A CHANCE AT
00:10:23STARTING AS A FRESHMAN. BUT I HAD ACTUALLY NEVER
00:10:25EVEN SPOKEN TO HIM UNTIL AFTER MY INJURY. WE JUST
00:10:28HADN'T HAD A CHANCE TO TALK. SO THE FIRST TIME
00:10:32WE DID SPEAK WAS AFTER I GOT OUT OF INTENSIVE CARE
00:10:37AND HE CAME TO MY HOSPITAL ROOM. HE WAS OBVIOUSLY
00:10:41TORN UP. I TOLD HIM IT WASN'T ANYTHING PERSONAL.
00:10:45IT WASN'T SOMETHING HE DID ON PURPOSE. I JUST TOLD
00:10:48HIM IT WAS OKAY AND WE'RE STILL FAMILY AND STILL
00:10:55TEAMMATES, AND I WANTED THEM TO CONTINUE ON AND
00:10:57PLAY AS HARD AS HE EVER DOES AND NOT HOLD BACK.
00:11:01THAT'S WHY OHIO STATE IS AS GOOD AS IT IS, BECAUSE
00:11:04WE'VE GOT GREAT PLAYERS AND GUYS THAT ARE COMMITTED
00:11:07TO THE TEAM. SO IT WAS NICE FOR THAT, JUST TO BE ABLE
00:11:11TO SPEAK TO HIM AND LET HIM KNOW THAT EVERYTHING
00:11:15WAS FINE. AND I DIDN'T REGRET ANYTHING THAT HAPPENED.
00:11:21A LITTLE BACKGROUND ON, I GUESS, MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS.
00:11:28I DON'T KNOW IF I CONSIDER MYSELF A MOTIVATIONAL
00:11:30SPEAKER. I'VE BEEN ASKED IF I DO THIS OFTEN, AND
00:11:31HONESTLY, I DO IT WHENEVER IT WORKS OUT WITH MY
00:11:37SCHEDULE. I LOVE BEING ABLE TO GIVE BACK. I LOVE BEING
00:11:41ABLE TO JUST GIVE A POSITIVE MESSAGE TO THOSE WHO NEED
00:11:47IT AND THOSE WHO WANT TO HEAR SOMETHING LIKE THIS.
00:11:50BUT I CAN REMEMBER SITTING IN THE AUDITORIUM IN
00:11:53HIGH SCHOOL WHEN MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS WOULD
00:11:54COME. AND I WOULD JUST SAY TO MYSELF, WHAT DO I NEED
00:11:57TO BE MOTIVATED FOR? I'M A TEENAGER. MY LIFE IS PRETTY
00:12:01GOOD. I DON'T REALLY NEED ANY MOTIVATION. IT NEVER
00:12:05REALLY HIT HOME, THE MESSAGE THAT A LOT OF SPEAKERS
00:12:08GAVE, AND I KNOW A LOT OF YOU ARE STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL
00:12:13AND MAY FEEL THAT THERE'S NOT A WHOLE LOT OF NEED
00:12:19FOR A MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER, BUT HONESTLY, IF YOU
00:12:23CAN JUST TAKE ONE THING FROM MY SPEECH, WHATEVER
00:12:26IT MAY BE, AND INSTILL IT IN YOUR LIFE TO BE ABLE TO
00:12:30GIVE BACK AND HELP OTHERS, I WOULD CONSIDER MY
00:12:33BEING HERE TODAY A SUCCESS. AGAIN, I'M EXTREMELY
00:12:35HONORED AND BLESSED TO BE GIVEN THIS SITUATION
00:12:40AND TO HAVE SOMETHING SO POSITIVE COME FROM
00:12:50SOMETHING SO NEGATIVE. ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOTIVATIONAL
00:12:54SPEAKER MOMENTS WAS MY SUMMER AFTER MY FRESHMAN YEAR
00:12:57OF COLLEGE, COACH TRESSEL HAD A SPEAKER COME AND TALK
00:13:00TO THE TEAM, AND HER NAME WAS ROSE MARRY ROSETTI.
00:13:02SHE WAS A PARAPLEGIC IN A WHEELCHAIR. A TREE FELL
00:13:09ON HER WHEN SHE WAS RIDING BIKES WITH HER HUSBAND.
00:13:11IT WAS A FREAK ACCIDENT. SHE WAS PARALYZED FROM THE
00:13:17CHEST DOWN. AND THROUGH THERAPY AND TIME AND
00:13:22PRAYER AND EVERYTHING ELSE, SHE WAS ABLE TO SLOWLY
00:13:24REGAIN LEG FUNCTION, AND SHE COULD WALK WITH
00:13:28A WALKER AND THINGS LIKE THAT. BUT, AGAIN, JUST HER
00:13:30DETERMINATION WAS AMAZING. BUT AT THE END OF HER
00:13:36TALK, SHE HAD EVERYONE ON THE TEAM, SHE PASSED
00:13:41OUT PIECES OF CONSTRUCTION PAPER AND HAD EVERYONE
00:13:44ON THE TEAM WRITE DOWN A SHORT MOTIVATIONAL
00:13:49MESSAGE TO PEOPLE IN DODD HALL AT OHIO STATE.
00:13:52THAT'S ACTUALLY WHERE I DID MY REHAB. AND BASICALLY,
00:13:57IT IS JUST PEOPLE WITH BRAIN INJURIES OR SPINAL CORD
00:14:02INJURIES THAT GO THERE TO DO THEIR REHAB TO TRY TO
00:14:05GET OUT OF THEIR WHEELCHAIR OR AT LEAST MAKE SOME
00:14:07PROGRESS TO IMPROVE THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE. I CAN
00:14:09REMEMBER EXACTLY WHERE I WAS SITTING IN THE
00:14:14AUDITORIUM WHEN SHE PASSED OUT THE PAPERS. AND
00:14:17I SAT THERE AND WAS THINKING TO MYSELF, HONESTLY,
00:14:19WHAT CAN YOU SAY TO SOMEBODY WHO HAS JUST HAD
00:14:23THEIR LIFE CHANGED COMPLETELY, THAT THEY MAY NEVER
00:14:24BE THE SAME. WHAT CAN YOU SAY TO THEM TO CHEER
00:14:27THEM UP AND GIVE THEM MOTIVATION? AFTER A FEW
00:14:31MINUTES OF THINKING, I CAME UP WITH SOMETHING AND
00:14:33THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A GOOD MESSAGE AND WROTE IT
00:14:36DOWN. SHE COLLECTED ALL OF THEM AT THE END.
00:14:38THE PIECES OF PAPER WERE HUNG ON THE WALL AT
00:14:42DODD HALL SO WHEN PEOPLE WERE GOING BY TO THERAPY
00:14:47OR JUST PASSING BY IN THE HALLWAY, THEY COULD
00:14:50READ INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGES FROM THE GUYS ON THE
00:14:53FOOTBALL TEAM. THAT WAS JUST HER IDEA OF BEING ABLE
00:14:56TO GIVE BACK AND GIVE THEM SOME MOTIVATION THROUGH
00:14:59US. FAST FORWARD TO MY SOPHOMORE YEAR, AFTER I BROKE
00:15:04MY NECK AND I WAS IN THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT.
00:15:08ONE OF THE NURSES WHO WAS IN MY ROOM AND ON MY
00:15:12FLOOR REMEMBERED SEEING MY MESSAGE TO THE
00:15:16PATIENTS AT DODD HALL. SHE ACTUALLY BROUGHT MY
00:15:21MESSAGE TO ME, ON MY PAPER, WHEN I WAS STILL IN THE
00:15:28INTENSIVE CARE UNIT. YOU TALK ABOUT GOD TELLING YOU
00:15:32THAT EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON, YOU KNOW,
00:15:36AND THAT HE HAS A PLAN FOR EVERYTHING, IT TRULY
00:15:39WAS JUST A WAKE-UP CALL TO SAY, THIS IS HIS WAY OF
00:15:42LETTING ME KNOW THAT THIS WAS MEANT TO HAPPEN
00:15:45AND EVERYTHING'S GOING TO BE OKAY. BUT I STILL HAVE
00:15:47MY LETTER TODAY. AND I DON'T KNOW IF YOU WANT
00:15:55TO PASS IT AROUND OR WHATEVER. I DON'T HAVE A
00:15:57PROBLEM WITH IT. OR WE CAN SET IT UP ON A TABLE IF
00:16:00YOU WANT TO SEE IT. BUT I WROTE, NEVER GIVE UP.
00:16:03NO MATTER HOW MUCH ADVERSITY YOU FACE, YOU CAN
00:16:06ALWAYS OVERCOME ADVERSITY. A LOT OF PEOPLE BELIEVE
00:16:11IN YOU. AND I JUST SIGNED IT. AND IT WAS HUNG ON THE
00:16:13WALL. AGAIN, THAT WAS ONE OF MY THINGS THAT KIND
00:16:16OF MADE IT OKAY FOR ME, OR REENFORCED TO ME THAT
00:16:22I COULD LIVE UP TO MY OWN WORDS. IT IS ADVICE THAT
00:16:27I GAVE THAT IF I DON'T LIVE UP TO MY OWN ADVICE,
00:16:31WHAT DOES THAT MAKE ME? SO THIS HAS JUST BEEN
00:16:35REENFORCING FOR ME TO HAVE. AND I HOPE IT GIVES YOU
00:16:39SOME ENCOURAGEMENT, AS WELL. SO WE CAN PUT THAT
00:16:42SOMEWHERE OR PASS IT AROUND. OKAY. I'M SURE A LOT
00:16:55OF YOU WANT TO HEAR ME TALK ABOUT OHIO STATE
00:16:58FOOTBALL. MY EXPERIENCE THERE WAS AMAZING. I DON'T
00:17:08REGRET GOING TO OHIO STATE TO WALK ON AND PLAY.
00:17:12I DON'T REGRET THE FACT I'M IN A WHEELCHAIR. YES,
00:17:15I'M SURE A LOT OF YOU CAN RELATE THAT IT'S NOT FUN
00:17:20BEING IN A WHEELCHAIR, BUT MY LIFE IS SO AMAZING NOW
00:17:25THAT I'VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY THAT I HAVE AND THE
00:17:29PERSPECTIVE THAT I HAVE TO BE ABLE TO LOOK BACK
00:17:33AND REFLECT AND LEARN AND TRULY APPRECIATE THE
00:17:37THINGS IN MY LIFE THAT ARE IMPORTANT. I CAN HONESTLY
00:17:40SAY THAT I WOULDN'T CHANGE ANYTHING. IF I COULD BE
00:17:43OUT OF THE CHAIR, I WOULD. BUT AT THE SAME TIME,
00:17:44IT GIVES ME OPPORTUNITIES LIKE THIS TO BE ABLE TO
00:17:48SPEAK TO AMAZING PEOPLE LIKE YOU. I'M JUST SO PROUD
00:17:51OF THAT. COACH TRESSEL WAS THERE FOR MY ALL FIVE
00:17:56YEARS I WAS ON THE TEAM. AND HE IS AND WAS AN
00:18:01AMAZING COACH. WE LEARNED SO MUCH FROM HIM.
00:18:05HE JUST INSTILLED SO MUCH POSITIVE MESSAGES, SO MANY
00:18:09POSITIVE MESSAGES. AND JUST TAUGHT US TO BECOME
00:18:14MATURE MEN, AND ALWAYS MAKE SURE WE PUT SCHOOL
00:18:17FIRST. WE WERE ALWAYS STUDENT ATHLETES, NOT ATHLETE
00:18:20STUDENTS. IT WAS HIS MAIN MESSAGE, THAT WE CAN GIVE
00:18:26BACK SO MUCH MORE BY STAYING IN CLASS AND DOING
00:18:29THE RIGHT THINGS. ALL THE THINGS THAT HAVE HAPPENED
00:18:34LATELY WITH HIM RETIRING AND LEAVING THE UNIVERSITY,
00:18:39I TRULY FEEL IS A TRAGEDY, AND I FEEL BAD THAT HE
00:18:44STEPPED UP AND DID THE RIGHT THING IN STEPPING
00:18:48DOWN. BUT AT THE SAME TIME, I JUST DON'T PICTURE
00:18:54HIM AS BEING THE PERSON TO DO THE WRONG THING.
00:18:57AND, AGAIN, IT IS JUST SAD THAT THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED,
00:19:01BUT LIFE GOES ON. EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON.
00:19:03AND OHIO STATE FOOTBALL WILL BE FINE. WE WILL BE
00:19:08BACK. COACH FICKLE IS A GREAT COACH. HE WAS THERE
00:19:12FOR ALL FIVE YEARS I WAS ON THE TEAM, AS WELL.
00:19:14AND I CAN GUARANTEE YOU THAT YOU WILL HAVE THE
00:19:17GUYS READY FOR THIS FALL AND THEY WILL BE OUT
00:19:20THERE KICKING BUTT AS USUAL. YOU REALLY SHOULDN'T
00:19:22HAVE ANY WORRIES. WHEN WE WERE ON THE TEAM,
00:19:26EVERY MORNING BEFORE PRACTICE, OR WHATEVER
00:19:29OUR SCHEDULE WAS, WHEN WE WOULD GO IN, BEFORE
00:19:32MEETINGS WOULD START, EVERYONE HAD WHAT WAS
00:19:36CALLED A WINNER'S MANUAL. IF ANY OF YOU HAVE
00:19:39READ COACH TRESSEL'S BOOK, IT'S ACTUALLY CALLED
00:19:43THE WINNER'S MANUAL. BUT IT'S BASICALLY A BIG
00:19:43TEXTBOOK, COMPRISED OF INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGES,
00:19:49DIFFERENT PRAYERS, DIFFERENT THINGS THAT WE READ
00:19:53EACH MORNING, JUST TO BE ABLE TO REFLECT ON
00:19:57HOW PRIVILEGED AND HOW GREAT OF AN HONOR IT
00:20:02IS TO BE ON THAT TEAM. WE DID THAT EVERY DAY,
00:20:05TO BE ABLE TO REFLECT AND APPRECIATE WHAT WE
00:20:09HAD AND PUT THE NEGATIVE THINGS OUT OF OUR
00:20:11MIND. AND THAT'S SOMETHING THAT I STILL HAVE
00:20:14TODAY, THAT I'M GLAD THAT HE INSTILLED THAT IN
00:20:17US TO BE ABLE TO REFLECT AND BE ABLE TO APPRECIATE
00:20:20WHAT WE HAVE. THE TEAMMATES THAT I WAS ABLE
00:20:26TO BE ON THE TEAM WITH WERE AMAZING. A LOT OF
00:20:31THOSE GUYS WERE A LOT OF FUN, AND THEY TAUGHT
00:20:34ME A LOT, AS WELL. JUST IN HARD WORK, SEEING THEIR
00:20:36WORK ETHIC, AND THE PAYOFF FOR HOW MUCH WORK
00:20:41THEY'VE PUT IN TO BE ABLE TO SEE THEM EITHER GO ON
00:20:44TO THE NFL AND ACHIEVE THEIR GOAL OF PLAYING IN
00:20:47THE NFL, OR BE BUSINESS OWNERS, OR WHATEVER IT
00:20:52MAY BE. THAT HARD WORK REALLY DOES PAY OFF.
00:20:56THAT'S WHAT THIS WHOLE CONFERENCE THIS WHOLE
00:21:00WEEK HAS BEEN FOR, FOR YOU GUYS, THAT HARD WORK
00:21:05REALLY DOES PAY O. AND EVEN IF YOU DON'T REMEMBER
00:21:10EVERYTHING THAT YOU LEARNED THIS WEEK, AS LONG AS
00:21:12YOU TAKE A FEW THINGS AND INSTILL THEM IN YOUR LIFE
00:21:15AND BE ABLE TO APPLY THEM TO HELP OTHERS, IT WILL
00:21:18OPEN DOORS FOR YOU THAT YOU HAVE NO IDEA.
00:21:22AGAIN, THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT
00:21:24ARE JUST IN NEED OF INSPIRATION AND IN NEED OF
00:21:28HELP. A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THIS ROOM ARE GOING TO BE
00:21:31THOSE PEOPLE, TO STEP UP AND HELP OUT PEOPLE IN NEED.
00:21:34AS LONG AS YOU ARE AWARE OF THAT, YOU CAN GIVE
00:21:38BACK AND CONTRIBUTE, IT IS REALLY GOING TO PAY OFF.
00:21:42YOU WILL BE THANKFUL DOWN THE ROAD THAT YOU HAVE
00:21:45THIS OPPORTUNITY TO COME TO THIS CONFERENCE AND
00:21:51LEARN. ALONG THOSE SAME LINES, SETTING GOALS AND
00:21:53PUTTING IN HARD WORK AND THINGS PAYING OFF, YOU
00:21:57HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT THERE ARE GOING TO BE SET
00:21:59BACKS IN LIFE. NOT EVERYTHING COMES TO YOU THE FIRST
00:22:02TRY. I'M SURE A LOT OF YOU ALREADY KNOW THIS. A LOT
00:22:05OF YOU HAD SET BACKS, WHETHER IT BE HEALTH PROBLEMS
00:22:09OR FAMILY PROBLEMS, OR PROBLEMS WITH FRIENDS,
00:22:10PROBLEMS WITH SCHOOL, ANYTHING. YOU HAVE TO BE
00:22:12PERSISTENT. YOU HAVE TO CONTINUE TO WORK HARD
00:22:16TO MATTER WHAT KIND OF SET BACK YOU HAVE.
00:22:20THE MESSAGE THAT I WROTE ABOUT FACING ADVERSITY,
00:22:25ADVERSITY IS GOING TO COME WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR
00:22:29NOT. IT IS JUST A MATTER OF LIFE. AND THE BETTER YOU
00:22:34CAN DEAL WITH ADVERSITY, THE HARDER YOU CAN PUSH
00:22:37YOURSELF, THE BETTER OFF YOU'RE GOING TO BE.
00:22:39THAT'S DEFINITELY ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I LEARNED
00:22:42WITH BEING ON THE FOOTBALL TEAM. WE LOST TWO
00:22:44NATIONAL TITLES BACK TO BACK. THAT WAS REALLY
00:22:47HARD. A LOT OF PEOPLE HAD HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR
00:22:50US. WE HAD HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR OURSELVES.
00:22:54BUT IN THE END, WE LOST THOSE TWO GAMES, AND A
00:22:56LOT OF PEOPLE THOUGHT THE SEASON WAS A FAILURE
00:22:58BECAUSE WE DIDN'T WIN THE NATIONAL TITLE.
00:23:00BUT THE TRUTH IS, WE WON BACK TO BACK OUTRIGHT
00:23:04BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS. WE STILL HAD A LOT TO BE
00:23:07THANKFUL FOR AND A LOT THAT WE DID ACCOMPLISH.
00:23:11MY CLASS WAS THE FIRST CLASS EVER IN OHIO STATE
00:23:14HISTORY TO BEAT MICHIGAN FIVE YEARS IN A ROAD.
00:23:17I HAVE FIVE PAIRS OF GOLD PANTS. THERE IS A SILVER
00:23:31LINING TO EVERYTHING. YOU JUST REALLY HAVE TO
00:23:35FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE THINGS. YEAH, WE WERE ALL
00:23:38DISAPPOINTED WE LOST TWO NATIONAL TITLES, BUT,
00:23:45AGAIN, WE ACCOMPLISHED SO MUCH AND PUT IN SO
00:23:50MUCH WORK, HONESTLY, WE STILL CAME OUT ON
00:23:55TOP NO MATTER WHICH WAY YOU WANT TO LOOK AT IT.
00:23:59AS FOR THIS CONFERENCE AND WHY A LOT OF YOU ARE
00:24:01HERE, OBVIOUSLY DISABILITY IS A BIG WORD THAT COMES
00:24:03INTO PLAY IN MANY OF YOUR LIVES. AND I WANT YOU TO
00:24:04KNOW THAT JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE A DISABILITY, AS
00:24:06I SAID BEFORE, YOU SHOULD NEVER LET YOUR DISABILITY
00:24:08DEFINE YOU. JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE A DISABILITY IN
00:24:12ONE AREA DOESN'T MEAN THAT YOU HAVE THE ABILITY
00:24:15IN SO MANY OTHER AREAS THAT YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE
00:24:19AND HELP OTHER PEOPLE OUT. THAT'S JUST WHAT IT'S
00:24:23ALL ABOUT. I HAVE A DISABILITY. BUT I'M STILL HERE,
00:24:25HELPING OUT AND DOING WHAT I CAN TO CONTRIBUTE
00:24:27AND GIVE BACK TO OTHERS. I THINK THAT'S AMAZING.
00:24:32I'M SO HONORED AND PRIVILEGED TO BE ABLE TO BE
00:24:35IN THE SITUATION I AM BECAUSE OF MY DISABILITY.
00:24:38A LOT OF YOU HERE NEED TO LEARN TO USE YOUR
00:24:40DISABILITY TO YOUR ADVANTAGE. THERE ARE SO MANY
00:24:44PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT ARE GOING TO BE WILLING TO
00:24:46HELP YOU ALONG THE WAY IN YOUR LIFE. JUST BECAUSE
00:24:49YOU HAVE A DISABILITY DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU
00:24:52CAN'T ACHIEVE AMAZING THINGS AND BE ON TV, OR BE
00:24:57IN MOVIES, OR BE WHATEVER YOU WANT TO BE IN LIFE.
00:25:02THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS YOU CAN DO DESPITE
00:25:06MINOR THINGS THAT YOU CAN'T DO. SO THAT'S KIND
00:25:10OF ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I WANT SO THAT'S KIND
00:25:12OF ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I WANT TO MAKE SURE
00:25:14THAT YOU TAKE FROM MY SPEECH, IS THAT YOU NEED
00:25:17TO FIND WHAT YOU CAN DO AND NOT WHAT YOU CANNOT.
00:25:19ALSO, JUST TAKE PRIDE. JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE A
00:25:22DISABILITY DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN'T BE PROUD OF
00:25:25WHO YOU ARE. YOU CAN ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS
00:25:28OVERCOME AND BEAT YOUR DISABILITY. YOU MAY NOT-
00:25:33I'M STILL TRYING TO GET OUT OF MY WHEELCHAIR.
00:25:35JUST BECAUSE I'VE BEEN IN A WHEELCHAIR FOR FIVE YEARS
00:25:37DOESN'T MEAN THAT I STILL CAN'T DO THERAPY AND
00:25:39WORK HARD AND DO THE THINGS THAT I NEED TO
00:25:43TO MAKE MYSELF STRONGER. SOME OF YOU MAY
00:25:47BE IN A WHEELCHAIR. SOME OF YOU MAY HAVE YOUR
00:25:49DISABILITY YOUR WHOLE LIFE. AGAIN, YOU SHOULDN'T
00:25:53LET THAT DEFINE YOU. THAT'S ONE OF THE MOST
00:25:54IMPORTANT THINGS THAT I CAN INSTILL IN YOU.
00:25:57SINCE MY INJURY, I'VE DEFER FITLY FOUND OUT THAT
00:26:02ATTITUDE IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS.
00:26:04I DON'T MEAN ATTITUDE AS IN WHEN YOUR PARENTS
00:26:08TELL YOU TO DO SOMETHING AND YOU GIVE THEM
00:26:10ATTITUDE THAT YOU DON'T WANT TO DO IT. I MEAN
00:26:13ATTITUDE AS IN HOW YOU RESPOND TO ADVERSITY.
00:26:16YOUR ATTITUDE IS THE ONE THING THAT YOU CAN
00:26:19CONTROL IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY. YOU CAN CHOOSE,
00:26:21THERE IS A GREAT QUOTE IN THAT MEETING ROOM OUT
00:26:27THIS DOOR TO THE RIGHT THAT I SAW. IT SAID, WHEN
00:26:28SOMETHING BAD HAPPENS TO YOU, YOU HAVE ONE OF
00:26:30THREE OPTIONS. YOU CAN LET IT DEFINE YOU, YOU
00:26:33CAN LET IT DESTROY YOU, OR YOU CAN LET IT
00:26:35STRENGTHEN YOU. THAT'S ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. YOUR
00:26:39ATTITUDE IS THE ONE THING THAT YOU CAN CONTROL.
00:26:42IF SOMETHING BAD HAPPENS, YOU CAN CHOOSE TO LOOK
00:26:44ON THE BRIGHT SIDE AND CHOOSE TO STAY POSITIVE.
00:26:47THROUGH MY EXPERIENCE, WHEN I DID MY THERAPY AT
00:26:52DODD HALL, IT WAS AMAZING TO SEE SOME OF THE
00:26:57PEOPLE THAT WERE DOING THERAPY THERE, AS WELL.
00:27:01PEOPLE THAT WERE PARALYZED FROM THE NECK DOWN.
00:27:04I, THANK GOD, WAS ABLE TO GAIN MOVEMENT OF MY
00:27:09ARMS. DESPITE THE FACT THAT I DON'T HAVE HAND
00:27:12MOVEMENT, I DON'T HAVE MOVEMENT, I DON'T HAVE
00:27:14TRICEPS CONTROL, I'M NOT -- I DON'T HAVE FULL
00:27:19STRENGTH IN MY SHOULDERS OR ANYTHING, BUT JUST
00:27:22MY BICEPS MOVEMENT MAKES SO MUCH OF A DIFFERENT
00:27:26IN MY LIFE. I'M SO THANKFUL THAT I HAVE THAT.
00:27:27SOME PEOPLE AREN'T ABLE TO SAY THEY HAVE THAT.
00:27:31AND TO ME, PEOPLE THAT ARE COMPLETE QUADRIPLEGICS,
00:27:35LIKE CHRISTOPHER REEVES, PARALYZED FROM THE NECK
00:27:40DOWN, I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW STRONG OF PEOPLE THEY ARE
00:27:44AND HOW POSITIVE A LOT OF THEM STAY, THAT THEY
00:27:48ARE ABLE TO LOOK ON THE POSITIVE SIDE OF THINGS.
00:27:51PEOPLE AT DODD HALL THAT HAD BRAIN INJURIES THAT
00:27:54AREN'T ABLE TO SPEAK AND THEIR FAMILIES ARE JUST
00:27:59TORN APART BECAUSE THEY REMEMBER THE PEOPLE THAT
00:28:01THEY ONCE WERE. IT CAN BE VERY DEVASTATING.
00:28:04IT IS VERY HURTFUL, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, FOR MY
00:28:10SITUATION, I'M SO THANKFUL THAT I'M HERE TO TALK
00:28:13ABOUT IT AND HERE TO SHARE MY MESSAGE. MY FAMILY
00:28:18WAS VERY UPSET OVER MY INJURY, AS WELL. BUT AT
00:28:21THE SAME TIME, WE'RE STILL ABLE TO BE HERE AND LAUGH
00:28:24ABOUT THINGS AND JOKE AND STILL HAVE MORE MEMORIES
00:28:29THAT WE CAN HAVE THROUGHOUT OR LIVES. AGAIN,
00:28:32THAT'S JUST WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT, IS JUST STAYING
00:28:37POSITIVE AND YOUR ATTITUDE IS WHERE THAT'S-
00:28:42WHERE THAT ALL COMES FROM. AGAIN, I KIND OF
00:28:46JUST TOUCHED ON IT WITH SEEING DIFFERENT PATIENTS
00:28:50AT DODD HALL. YOU REALLY NEED TO HAVE PERSPECTIVE.
00:28:55SINCE MY INJURY, I HAVE GAINED SO MUCH PERSPECTIVE
00:28:58ON LIFE THAT, AGAIN, THINGS COULD BE SO MUCH WORSE.
00:29:01THAT'S KIND OF WHAT I'VE ALWAYS SAID WHEN PEOPLE
00:29:06ASK ME, YOU KNOW, WHAT WAS YOUR FEELING AFTER
00:29:08YOUR INJURY, OR HOW HARD WAS IT, THINGS LIKE
00:29:11THAT. THE YEAH, IT WAS VERY HARD, AND IT TOOK ME A
00:29:14WHILE TO BE ABLE TO FULLY ACCEPT THINGS, BUT
00:29:16DESPITE THAT, THE DAYS WHERE I WAS HAVING A HARD
00:29:18TIME ABOUT MY INJURY, I WAS STILL THANKFUL FOR
00:29:22EVERYTHING THAT I DID HAVE. SO HAVING PERSPECTIVE
00:29:26ON LIFE REALLY HELPS YOU IN BEING ABLE TO BE THANKFUL
00:29:31FOR WHAT YOU HAVE. SEEING PEOPLE THAT ARE LESS
00:29:36FORTUNATE THAN YOU, THAT REALLY MAKES YOU
00:29:39APPRECIATE WHAT YOU DO HAVE. PEOPLE THAT ARE
00:29:43LESS FORTUNATE THAN YOU, YOU BETTER BE THERE TO
00:29:46HELP THEM OUT IF THEY NEED HELP AT ALL. THAT'S WHAT
00:29:50LIFE IS ALL ABOUT TO ME, IS BEING ABLE TO HELP OUT
00:29:52AND HELP THOSE THAT CAN'T HELP THEMSELVES. SO
00:29:55DESPITE YOUR SITUATION, IF YOU CAN HELP ONE PERSON
00:30:00IN NEED, THAT'S ALL IT TAKES. AND I'M JUST SO
00:30:02FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO HELP PEOPLE THAT ARE
00:30:05LESS FORTUNATE THAN ME. IT JUST REALLY HELPS ME
00:30:08TO BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT I HAVE. NEVER TAKE YOUR
00:30:13SITUATION FOR GRANTED. RESILIENCE IS ANOTHER WORD
00:30:16I'VE LEARNED SINCE MY INJURY. RECENTLY, THE ESPY
00:30:23AWARDS WERE ON. THE MAN'S NAME WAS
00:30:35DEWEY BOZALLA. DID ANYBODY SEE HIS STORY?
00:30:40AMAZING STORY. BASICALLY, HE WAS CONVICTED OF
00:30:44A CRIME BACK IN THE '80S WHEN HE WAS JUST A
00:30:47TEENAGER OF KILLING A 90-YEAR-OLD WOMAN.
00:30:52IF THE END, 2009, SO BASICALLY TWO YEARS AGO, HE
00:30:55WAS IN JAIL FROM THE '80S, I CAN'T REMEMBER EXACTLY
00:31:00WHAT YEAR, THROUGH 2009, FOR BEING WRONGFULLY
00:31:02CONVICTED. THE WHOLE TIME, HE KEPT A POSITIVE
00:31:06ATTITUDE WHILE IN PRISON, JUST SAYING HE'S NOT
00:31:10GOING TO LET IT GET HIM DOWN. I DON'T THINK MANY
00:31:14PEOPLE COULD SAY THAT, THAT BEING WRONGFULLY
00:31:18CONVICTED IN A STATE PENITENTIARY WITH CONVICTED
00:31:20MURDERS AND PEOPLE THAT REALLY ARE BAD PEOPLE,
00:31:24DESPITE ALL OF THAT, HE STAYED POSITIVE AND KNEW
00:31:28THAT HE WASN'T GUILTY. THE HE KEPT TRYING TO
00:31:33CHALLENGE HIS VERDICT. HE KEPT TRYING TO TAKE
00:31:39IT BACK TO COURT AND GET A NEW CASE SO HE COULD
00:31:44PROVE HIS INNOCENCE. I THINK IN THE '90S SOMETIME,
00:31:47HE WAS ABLE TO GET A NEW CASE. THEY SAID THAT IF
00:31:51HE ADMITTED TO THE MURDER, THE TIME HE SERVED
00:31:55WOULD BE ENOUGH AND THEY WOULD LET HIM OUT
00:31:59ON PAROLE. SO BASICALLY, HE COULD WALK FREE IF HE
00:32:02JUST SAID, YEP, I DID IT. THAT WOULD BE IT. IT WOULD
00:32:04GO ON HIS RECORD, BUT HE COULD GET OUT OF JAIL
00:32:06THAT DAY. HE DIDN'T DO IT. HE SAID THAT I CANNOT
00:32:09LIVE MY LIFE WITH YOU TELLING ME THAT I DID
00:32:11SOMETHING SO HORRIBLE THAT I NEVER DID. AND HE
00:32:14WENT BACK TO JAIL. JUST LIKE THAT. BECAUSE HIS
00:32:17HONOR AND HIS PRIDE WAS MORE IMPORTANT THAN
00:32:25HIS FREEDOM. AGAIN, I THINK THE STRENGTH OF GOD
00:32:26AND SUPPORT FROM WHEREVER HE GOT IT WAS AMAZING.
00:32:29AND JUST TO GET HIM THROUGH THAT HARD TIME.
00:32:34BUT EVENTUALLY, IT PAID OFF. HE WAS ABLE TO GET
00:32:37OUT OF JAIL IN 2009, DESPITE BEING IN -- I THINK THEY
00:32:41SAID HE WAS 51 WHEN HE GOT OUT. THE MAJORITY OF
00:32:43HIS LIFE WAS SPENT IN JAIL FOR SOMETHING THAT HE
00:32:46DIDN'T DO. HIS ATTITUDE WAS AMAZING. IT IS THINGS
00:32:49LIKE THAT THAT REALLY GIVE ME MOTIVATION TO KNOW
00:32:53BAD THINGS HAPPEN IN PEOPLE'S LIVES, BUT, AGAIN, YOUR
00:32:58ATTITUDE IS WHAT CAN GET YOU THROUGH AND WHAT
00:33:02CAN REALLY PAY OFF FOR YOU IN THE END. SELFLESS IS
00:33:07ANOTHER WORD THAT IS IMPORTANT TO ME. I ACTUALLY
00:33:12LOOKED UP THE DEFINITIONS TO SOME OF THESE.
00:33:16I'VE KIND OF SKIPPED OVER A FEW OF THEM. BUT THE
00:33:19DEFINITION FOR SELFLESS MEANS CONCERNED MORE
00:33:22WITH THE NEEDS AND WISHES OF OTHERS THAN WITH
00:33:25ONE'S OWN. BASICALLY BEING UNSELFISH. TO ME, THAT
00:33:29IS JUST AMAZING. IF YOU CAN BE A SELFLESS PERSON
00:33:31AND PUT OTHER PEOPLE'S NEEDS IN FRONT OF YOURS,
00:33:33THE WORLD WOULD JUST BE SO MUCH OF A BETTER
00:33:36PLACE. IT WOULD JUST BE AMAZING TO WALK OUT OF
00:33:40YOUR HOUSE AND KNOW THAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE
00:33:43GOING TO LOOK AFTER YOU, AND YOU'RE GOING TO
00:33:45LOOK AFTER OTHER PEOPLE AND GIVE BACK AND
00:33:47CONTRIBUTE AND HELP PEOPLE THAT ARE IN NEED.
00:33:50IT IS JUST VERY SAD TO ME THAT THE WORLD TODAY,
00:33:56PEOPLE DON'T DO THIS. PEOPLE CONSIDER THEMSELVES
00:34:03FIRST AND DON'T TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION OTHER
00:34:06PEOPLE'S FEELINGS OR OTHER PEOPLE'S NEEDS.
00:34:09IT IS JUST REALLY SAD THAT THE WORLD IS SO
00:34:12SELFISH, BUT EVERYONE IN THIS ROOM CAN HAVE THE
00:34:16OPPORTUNITY TO BE SELFLESS AND TO GIVE BACK AND
00:34:21TO HELP PEOPLE THAT ARE IN NEED AND THINGS LIKE
00:34:24THAT. I JUST THINK THAT'S ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT
00:34:27THINGS. ALL IT TAKES IS DISCIPLINE. YOU CAN MAKE A
00:34:31CHOICE. YOU CAN CHOOSE TO PUT PEOPLE IN FRONT
00:34:35OF YOU. EVEN IF IT MEANS THAT YOU MAY BE
00:34:38INCONVENIENCED A LITTLE BIT. IF IT PUTS A SMILE ON
00:34:41SOMEONE ELSE'S FACE AND IT DOESN'T HURT YOU TO
00:34:43DO THAT, I DON'T SEE WHY YOU SHOULDN'T TAKE THAT
00:34:47OPPORTUNITY TO HELP SOMEBODY ELSE OUT THAT
00:34:50TRULY NEEDS IT. SELFLESS IS JUST ONE OF THE WORDS
00:34:54THAT I LOVE. I LOVE THE DEFINITION, TOO, BECAUSE I
00:34:58TRULY WOULD LOVE TO SEE A SELFLESS WORLD AND
00:35:03THAT PEOPLE REALLY DO CARE FOR EACH OTHER
00:35:05MORE THAN THEMSELVES. TRANSCEND IS ANOTHER
00:35:10WORD. I WILL GIVE YOU THE DEFINITION TO THAT,
00:35:17AS WELL. TRANSCEND MEANS TO BE OR GO BEYOND
00:35:19THE RANGE OR LIMITS OF. BASICALLY, I FEEL TRANSCEND
00:35:24MEANS TO GO ABOVE AND BEYOND IN WHATEVER IT
00:35:30MAY BE. WHETHER IT BE SCHOOL, STUDYING AND
00:35:34DOING THE RIGHT THINGS, HELPING OTHERS. WHETHER
00:35:37IT MAY BE YOUR JOB OR ANYTHING. YOU CAN APPLY IT
00:35:41TO A LOT OF THINGS IN LIFE. IF YOU GO ABOVE AND
00:35:46BEYOND, YOU REALLY WILL BE PAID BACK IN FULL FOR
00:35:48YOUR GOOD DEEDS. PEOPLE WILL BE MORE
00:35:51RESPONSIVE AND MORE WILLING TO HELP YOU OUT
00:35:53IF YOU GIVE BACK AND DO GOOD THINGS.
00:35:57I HONESTLY CAN'T THINK OF ANY SITUATION WHERE
00:36:01SOMEONE HAS GONE OUT OF THEIR WAY TO HELP ME OUT
00:36:05AND I JUST TURNED AROUND AND EITHER BRUSHED THEM
00:36:07OFF OR NOT EVEN SAY THANK YOU, OR TRY AND REPAY
00:36:09THEM BACK. THERE'S JUST SO MUCH THAT CAN BE SAID
00:36:13FOR HELPING OTHERS OUT THAT REALLY NEED IT.
00:36:18BELIEVE IS BASICALLY THE THEME OF MY LIFE SINCE
00:36:30MY INJURY. YOU TRULY HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT THINGS
00:36:38WILL BE BETTER AND THAT THINGS CAN BE BETTER AND
00:36:40THAT YOU CAN DO THE UNTHINKABLE IN ANYTHING.
00:36:48SOMETHING SIMPLE, SOMETHING COMPLEX. YOU TRULY
00:36:50HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING.
00:36:55EVERYONE HERE IN THIS ROOM I BELIEVE KNOWS THAT
00:36:58AND CAN HELP YOU IN IN WHATEVER IT MAY BE.
00:37:02YOU JUST HAVE TO ASK. THAT'S KIND OF ONE OF
00:37:06THE THINGS I WILL GET TO EVENTUALLY, IS ASKING
00:37:08FOR HELP. SO WHATEVER GOALS YOU HAVE, YOU HAVE
00:37:14TO BELIEVE YOU CAN SET THEM. YOU JUST HAVE TO SET
00:37:20A GOAL. IF YOU HAVE NO GOALS IN LIFE, YOU'LL NEVER
00:37:23ACHIEVE ANYTHING. YOU WILL KIND OF FLOW THROUGH
00:37:28LIFE AND, AGAIN, NOT BE ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE OR
00:37:31ACHIEVE ANYTHING. SO WHATEVER YOUR GOALS MAY
00:37:32BE, SET THEM. AND THROUGHOUT LIFE, YOU'LL FIND
00:37:33PEOPLE THAT WILL TELL YOU CAN'T. YOU WILL FIND
00:37:35PEOPLE THAT WILL TELL YOU, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.
00:37:38IF YOU WANT TO DO IT, DO IT. DON'T WORRY ABOUT
00:37:41WHAT OTHER PEOPLE SAY. BUT FOR EVERY ONE PERSON
00:37:47THAT TELLS YOU THAT YOU CAN'T, TRUST ME,
00:37:48THERE ARE AT LEAST A HUNDRED OTHER PEOPLE THAT
00:37:50WILL TELL YOU THAT YOU CAN. IT IS JUST A MATTER
00:37:52OF CHOOSING WHO YOU WANT TO LISTEN TO.
00:37:54IF YOU LISTEN TO THE PERSON THAT TELLS YOU CAN'T,
00:37:57THEN THEY'RE RIGHT, YOU CAN'T. IF YOU LISTEN TO
00:38:02THE PEOPLE THAT TELL YOU THAT YOU CAN AND YOU
00:38:04NEVER GIVE UP, THEN ONE DAY, YOU WILL. THAT'S JUST
00:38:09ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS. A LOT OF YOU
00:38:10ARE IN HIGH SCHOOL. I DON'T KNOW IF THERE IS ANY
00:38:12MIDDLE SCHOOLERS HERE. BUT I'M SURE THROUGHOUT
00:38:16YOUR LIFETIME, YOU'VE EXPERIENCED SOMEBODY BEING
00:38:19MEAN TO YOU, WHETHER IT BE BECAUSE OF YOUR
00:38:24DISABILITY OR ANYTHING. MAYBE BECAUSE OF HOW
00:38:26MUCH MONEY YOUR PARENTS MAKE, OR THE CLOTHES
00:38:30THAT YOU WEAR, OR SOMETHING THAT YOU DID.
00:38:32KIDS ARE EXTREMELY MEAN. I DON'T SAY THAT TO BE
00:38:34FUNNY. FOR WHATEVER REASON, KIDS CAN BE NICE,
00:38:39BUT KIDS CAN ALSO BE VERY MEAN. HIGH SCHOOL CAN
00:38:42BE TOUGH FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE. AND IT IS EXTREMELY
00:38:48SAD THE SUICIDE RATE THAT HIGH SCHOOL KIDS HAVE.
00:38:50THERE ARE A LOT OF KIDS THAT WILL COMMIT SUICIDE
00:38:53BECAUSE THEY FEEL LIFE IS TOO ROUGH AND THEY
00:38:58WON'T AMOUNT TO ANYTHING, BECAUSE PEOPLE TELL
00:39:00THEM THAT THEIR WHOLE LIVES. AS YOU GET OLDER
00:39:05AND MATURE AND THOSE PEOPLE AROUND YOU
00:39:07MATURE, YOU WILL FIND THAT PEOPLE WILL BECOME
00:39:08A LOT NICER. YOU JUST HAVE TO STICK IT OUT.
00:39:12DON'T WORRY ABOUT THOSE PEOPLE THAT ARE MEAN
00:39:17TO YOU, BECAUSE IN THE END, THEY WILL HAVE WHAT'S
00:39:19COMING TO THEM. UNLESS THEY DECIDE TO CHANGE
00:39:21THEIR ATTITUDE AND TO START BEING NICER, TRUST
00:39:24ME, EVERYONE WILL GET WHAT COMES TO THEM IN
00:39:28THE END. JUST BEING NICE IS, TO ME, THE SIMPLEST
00:39:31THING, THE SIMPLEST ACT THAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP
00:39:36PEOPLE OUT. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T WORRY
00:39:43ABOUT PEOPLE THAT ARE MEAN TO YOU. ESPECIALLY IF
00:39:47YOU ARE IN HIGH SCHOOL. AGAIN, THINGS WILL GET A
00:39:50LOT EASIER AS YOU GROW OLDER, AS YOU MATURE, AND
00:39:54YOU CAN CHOOSE THE PEOPLE THAT YOU HAVE IN YOUR
00:39:58LIFE. BEING IN HIGH SCHOOL IS KIND OF HARD TO TELL
00:40:00CLASSMATES TO NOT COME AROUND YOU OR TO NOT BE
00:40:02MEAN TO YOU AND HAVE THEM LISTEN. BUT AS AN ADULT,
00:40:05YOU CAN TAKE MORE RESPONSIBILITY AND YOU CAN MAKE
00:40:07THE CHOICE OF WHO YOU WANT IN YOUR LIFE AND WHO
00:40:09YOU DON'T WANT IN YOUR LIFE. DID WE SWITCH
00:40:11INTERPRETERS? I DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE. YOU ARE VERY
00:40:14SNEAKY. ALL RIGHT. THE THEME OF EVERYTHING,
00:40:25CHALLENGE AND ADVERSITY. I'D LIKE TO READ THOSE
00:40:27DEFINITIONS TO YOU, AS WELL. CHALLENGE IS A TASK
00:40:31OR SITUATION THAT TESTS SOMEONE'S ABILITIES DESPITE
00:40:37WHAT IS COMMONLY ACCEPTED AS TRUE. ADVERSITY IS
00:40:40BASICALLY JUST DIFFICULTIES OR MISFORTUNE.
00:40:45SO THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE, YOU WILL EXPERIENCE
00:40:47ADVERSITY. YOU WILL EXPERIENCE CHALLENGES.
00:40:49IT IS JUST A MATTER OF HOW YOU RESPOND TO THEM.
00:40:53YOU REALLY CAN'T DETERMINE WHAT KIND OF CHARACTER
00:40:56YOU HAVE UNTIL YOU ARE TESTED. I WOULDN'T KNOW
00:41:00HOW STRONG I AM. MY FAMILY WOULDN'T KNOW HOW
00:41:02STRONG THEY ARE UNLESS I BROKE MY NECK AND ENDED
00:41:04UP IN A WHEELCHAIR. IF YOU NEVER TEST YOURSELF AND
00:41:07NEVER CHALLENGE YOURSELF, HOW CAN YOU EVER
00:41:13DETERMINE WHAT YOU'RE CAPABLE OF? I THINK THAT'S
00:41:20JUST A GREAT MESSAGE TO GIVE TO KIDS AND GIVE TO
00:41:23ANYBODY, EVEN ADULTS. THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT HAVE
00:41:25GONE THEIR WHOLE LIFE THAT MAYBE HAVE NEVER
00:41:27CHALLENGED THEMSELVES OR NEVER STEPPED OUTSIDE
00:41:30THE BOX TO REALLY FIND OUT WHAT THEY'RE CAPABLE OF.
00:41:33AGAIN, IF YOU DO CHALLENGE YOURSELF, YOU WILL
00:41:35FIND OUT YOU MAY FAIL THE FIRST TIME. YOU MAY FAIL
00:41:3810 TIMES. BUT AS LONG AS YOU KEEP TRYING, YOU WILL
00:41:42EVENTUALLY SUCCEED. THAT'S JUST, TO ME, WHAT
00:41:46CHALLENGE AND ADVERSITY IS ALL ABOUT, IS TO BE
00:41:48ABLE TO FIND OUT WHAT YOU ARE CAPABLE OF.
00:41:50AND IT IS OKAY TO ALSO BACK DOWN, AS WELL.
00:41:53IF THERE IS SOMETHING THAT SCARES YOU OR SOMETHING
00:41:57YOU ARE NOT READY TO DO, DON'T WORRY ABOUT SAYING
00:42:01NO AND BACKING OFF. JUST KEEP IT IN THE BACK OF
00:42:04YOUR MIND THAT YOU ARE CAPABLE OF A LOT OF THINGS
00:42:06THAT YOU MAY NOT THINK YOU ARE. ASKING FOR HELP.
00:42:10I HAD MENTIONED THAT BEFORE. SINCE MY INJURY, I'VE
00:42:12HAD TO LEARN TO ASK FOR HELP. AND IT'S SOMETHING
00:42:16THAT -- IT'S NOT THAT I WAS AFRAID TO DO BEFORE MY
00:42:21INJURY OR ANYTHING, BUT IT IS ONE OF THOSE THINGS
00:42:24THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T REALLY DO. THEY'RE AFRAID
00:42:30TO ASK FOR HELP. THEY'RE AFRAID TO REACH OUT.
00:42:35THE THING IS, THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE THAT WANT
00:42:37TO HELP AND THAT CAN HELP. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS
00:42:39ASK. FOR ME AND MY SITUATION, I HAVE TO ASK FOR HELP
00:42:43ALL THE TIME. IT IS JUST SOMETHING I'VE HARD TO LEARN.
00:42:46BUT I'VE FOUND THAT IT MAKES MY LIFE SO MUCH
00:42:49EASIER IF ALL I DO IS ASK. I'VE GOT AMAZING PEOPLE IN
00:42:52MY LIFE THAT HAVE BEEN THERE FOR ME AND ARE
00:42:57WILLING TO HELP ME OUT JUST BECAUSE I ASK.
00:43:00EVEN WHEN I DON'T ASK, THEY'RE THERE TO HELP ME.
00:43:03SO DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP.
00:43:06THERE ARE SO MANY RESOURCES. I'M NOT SURE WHERE
00:43:08HE IS, SCOTT LISSNER. IS HE AROUND? SCOTT?
00:43:15HE WAS AT OHIO STATE AND HELPED ME A LOT THROUGH
00:43:18THE OFFICE OF DISABILITY SERVICES IN CLASS AND
00:43:21EVERYTHING LIKE THAT. THE I NEEDED TO FIND OUT
00:43:23HOW TO DO THINGS. THAT'S WHAT THIS WEEK HAS BEEN
00:43:27ABOUT, IS GIVING YOU RESOURCES AND TEACHING YOU
00:43:30THE RIGHT PEOPLE TO ASK AND WHAT TO DO WITH
00:43:32CERTAIN SITUATIONS. AGAIN, IT IS REALLY NOT THAT
00:43:35HARD TO ASK FOR HELP. AGAIN, IF YOU DON'T ASK,
00:43:41YOU'RE STUCK IN THE SITUATION THAT YOU ARE.
00:43:43IF YOU DO ASK, SOMEBODY IS THERE TO HELP PICK YOU
00:43:45UP AND GET YOU THROUGH WHATEVER YOU MAY NEED.
00:43:48ASKING FOR HELP IS AMAZING. COMMUNICATION.
00:43:51COMMUNICATION, THERE IS A VERY FAMOUS SAYING
00:43:57THAT GOES WITH THAT. IT PRETTY MUCH GOES,
00:43:59COMMUNICATION IS THE ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM,
00:44:02AND THE PROBLEM SO THE ANSWER. IF YOU THINK
00:44:06ABOUT IT, IT MAKES ABSOLUTE SENSE. IF YOU DON'T
00:44:10COMMUNICATE, YOU WON'T ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING.
00:44:12IF YOU SIT THERE AND KEEP THINGS TO YOURSELF AND
00:44:15DON'T TELL SOMEBODY WHAT'S WRONG OR CONVEY
00:44:20WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN, HOW CAN YOUR SITUATION
00:44:22IMPROVE? SO AS LONG AS YOU COMMUNICATE AND
00:44:28MAKE AN EFFORT TO TRY AND MAKE THE SITUATION
00:44:29RIGHT, NOTHING'S GOING TO HAPPEN. SO MAKE SURE
00:44:31IN ANY SITUATION DOWN THE ROAD THAT YOU ALWAYS
00:44:34COMMUNICATE, ASK FOR HELP, AND HELP WILL BE
00:44:38PROVIDED. CHANGE IS SOMETHING THAT'S BEEN BIG
00:44:43IN MY LIFE, AS WELL. OBVIOUSLY I'VE HAD TO CHANGE
00:44:46A LOT OF THINGS IN MY LIFE. FOR BETTER, FOR WORSE,
00:44:49CHANGE IS SOMETHING I'VE HAD TO ACCEPT.
00:44:54IT IS SOMETHING YOU SHOULD NOT BE AFRAID OF.
00:44:57SOMETIMES CHANGE CAN BE A BAD THING, BUT ALSO
00:45:02SOMETIMES CHANGE CAN BE A GOOD THING.
00:45:05YOU JUST HAVE TO KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN AND KEEP
00:45:09ON PUSHING AND KEEP ON FIGHTING, NO MATTER
00:45:12WHETHER THE CHANGE IS GOOD OR BAD, IN THE END,
00:45:15YOU CAN MAKE CHANGE BE A POSITIVE THING FOR YOU.
00:45:19AGAIN, IN MY SITUATION, SINCE MY INJURY, I'VE HAD
00:45:22TO CHANGE THE WAY I STUDY. I'M NOT ABLE TO USE
00:45:25MY HANDS. I'M NOT ABLE TO TYPE. I'VE HAD TO
00:45:30CHANGE THE WAY I WRITE PAPERS, THINGS LIKE THAT.
00:45:33AGAIN, IT IS JUST A MATTER OF ADAPTING TO LIFE
00:45:36AND MOVING ON. YOU NEVER WANT TO GIVE UP AND
00:45:39SHUT DOWN BECAUSE LIFE IS JUST TOO PRECIOUS AND
00:45:44TOO VALUABLE. YOU JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU
00:45:48ALWAYS KEEP TRYING. ONE OF THE LAST THINGS THAT
00:45:54I WANT TO TALK ABOUT IS JUST THE WORD REMEMBERED.
00:45:56THE DEFINITION FOR THAT IS, BE ABLE TO BRING TO
00:46:00ONE'S MIND AN AWARENESS OF SOMEONE OR SOMETHING
00:46:03THAT ONE HAS SEEN, KNOWN, OR EXPERIENCED IN THE
00:46:08PAST. AND BASICALLY, IT CAN KIND OF MEAN DIFFERENT
00:46:13THINGS TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE. TO ME, I WANT TO BE
00:46:17REMEMBER THE FOR BEING ABLE TO GIVE BACK AND
00:46:23FOR DOING THE RIGHT THING AND FOR HELPING OTHERS.
00:46:26NOBODY EVER WANTS TO BE REMEMBERED FOR DOING BAD
00:46:30THINGS OR FOR NOT HELPING OUT OR BEING MEAN.
00:46:34AND I THINK ONE OF THE EASIEST WAYS TO BE
00:46:35REMEMBERED IS TO HELP OUT AND TO CONTRIBUTE.
00:46:38THERE HAVE BEEN SO MANY PEOPLE IN MY LIFE THAT
00:46:39HAVE STEPPED UP AND HELPED ME IN A TIME OF NEED
00:46:47THAT I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER. TO ME, THAT JUST MAKES
00:46:49ME WANT TO GIVE BACK TO THEM AND TO HELP THEM
00:46:52OUT WHENEVER THEY NEED IT. IT IS JUST SOMETHING
00:46:54SIMPLE LIKE THAT THAT CAN REALLY HELP YOU AND
00:46:56HELP OTHERS. BASICALLY IT IS JUST A MATTER OF, IF
00:47:00YOU HAVE THE ABILITY OR THE MEANS TO HELP
00:47:03SOMEONE, YOU SHOULD. I WILL SAY THAT AGAIN.
00:47:06IF YOU HAVE THE ABILITY OR THE MEANS TO HELP
00:47:10SOMEONE IN NEED, YOU SHOULD. THERE SHOULD
00:47:13NEVER BE A SITUATION IN YOUR LIFE WHERE YOU SEE
00:47:17SOMEBODY IN NEED, WHETHER IT BE SOMEBODY
00:47:20THAT NEEDS A LITTLE MONEY TO GET BY, SOMEBODY
00:47:23THAT NEEDS HELP PICKING UP THEIR BOOKS THAT
00:47:27THEY DROPPED IN THE HALLWAY, ANYTHING. IF YOU
00:47:31HAVE THE ABILITY TO HELP SOMEBODY OUT, TAKE
00:47:36THE TIME AND DO IT. YOU WILL BE REWARDED GREATLY.
00:47:38JUST WHETHER THEY SAY THANK YOU.
00:47:39EVEN IF THEY DON'T SAY THANK YOU, THEY MAY NOT
00:47:41EXPECT SOMEBODY TO HELP THEM OUT, WHATEVER IT
00:47:43MAY BE. AGAIN, IT IS JUST VERY REWARDING TO HELP
00:47:47OUT AND TO GIVE BACK. SO BASICALLY THOSE ARE
00:47:51THE MAIN THINGS THAT I'VE LEARNED SINCE MY INJURY.
00:47:54AND I'M JUST SO FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO SHARE MY
00:47:57MESSAGE AND SHARE WITH YOU WHAT I'VE LEARNED IN
00:48:00THE FACE OF ADVERSITY, AND JUST TO BE ABLE TO
00:48:07TURN MY NEGATIVE SITUATION INTO SOMETHING
00:48:09POSITIVE. THE AND TO MEET ALL OF YOU WONDERFUL
00:48:11PEOPLE AND TO BE HERE TODAY. AGAIN, I AM SO
00:48:13THANKFUL. I THANK GOD. GOD JUST GIVES ME SO
00:48:16MUCH STRENGTH. I REALLY HOPE THAT A LOT OF YOU,
00:48:19WHETHER YOU TURN TO GOD OR TURN TO FAMILY OR
00:48:23FRIENDS FOR HELP, DO WHATEVER IT TAKES, BECAUSE
00:48:25LIFE REALLY IS WORTH LIVING. IT IS JUST PEOPLE LIKE
00:48:30YOU THAT ARE AMAZING AND CAN HELP OUT AS MUCH
00:48:34AS ANYBODY ELSE. DON'T EVER FORGET THAT YOU
00:48:37ARE ALL VALUABLE AND YOU CAN ALL CONTRIBUTE
00:48:41IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
00:48:45IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR ANYTHING, I WOULD
00:48:47BE HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS. GOD BLESS YOU.
00:48:53
00:48:59
00:49:01>>COULD WE TAKE QUESTIONS?
00:49:03DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?
00:49:07>>THAT WAS ME. SORRY. NO QUESTIONS?
00:49:09EVEN OHIO STATE STUFF. I DON'T CARE.
00:49:15
00:49:16>>O-H.
00:49:18>>I-O.
00:49:22>>ALSO, IF ANYBODY WANTS ME TO SIGN PICTURES OR
00:49:29ANYTHING, I WOULD BE HAPPY TO DO SO, AS WELL, AFTER.
00:49:30>>FANTASTIC. THANK YOU, TYSON.
00:49:36NOW WE WILL GIVE YOU A CHANCE TO EAT.
00:49:40>>THANK YOU SO MUCH.
00:49:46
00:49:52
00:49:52>>AT THIS TIME, I WOULD LIKE TO, THIS OPPORTUNITY
00:49:57NOW HAS PRESENTED ITSELF TO GIVE THE YOUNG
00:50:00PEOPLE AN OPPORTUNITY TO TALK ABOUT WHAT THEY'VE
00:50:03EXPERIENCED. THIS IS MY FAVORITE TIME DURING THE
00:50:08WHOLE PROCESS. ACTUALLY, LAST YEAR, CRIED A LOT.
00:50:13I HOPE NOT TO DO THAT THIS YEAR. BUT I WANT TO PASS
00:50:18THE MIKE AROUND. CAN WE GET SOMEONE TO DO THAT?
00:50:21>>WE WILL PASS IT.
00:50:27
00:50:30>>ALL RIGHT, HEATHER.
00:50:33>>THEY'RE GOING TO WALK THE MIKE AROUND, GIVE
00:50:35YOU AN OPPORTUNITY TO TALK ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE
00:50:38HERE AT Y.L.F. AND WHAT THIS WEEK HAS MEANT FOR YOU.
00:50:44
00:50:50
00:50:52>>OKAY. SO I'M MAGGIE. OH, MY GOD, THERE'S A VIDEO
00:50:56CAMERA. OKAY. SORRY. THIS EXPERIENCE AT Y.L.F.
00:51:02HAS CHANGED MY LIFE A LOT. THERE HAS BEEN FANTASTIC
00:51:08FRIENDS. THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF INSPIRING LEADERS AND
00:51:13STUFF WHO HAVE INSPIRED ME A LOT. AND THEY ALSO
00:51:18TAUGHT ME TO ACCEPT TO HAVE A DISABILITY AND STUFF.
00:51:24SO I ACCEPTED MINE. YEP. THIS -- YEP.
00:51:33
00:51:41
00:51:47
00:51:53
00:51:59
00:52:05
00:52:06>>HI. I'M CAROLINE. THIS EXPERIENCE HAS GIVEN ME A
00:52:09REALLY GOOD EXPERIENCE. AND IT WAS A LOT OF FUN
00:52:12DOING THIS AND KNOWING A LOT OF THIS STUFF WAS A
00:52:15LOT OF FUN TO DO. SO IT'S BEEN A GOOD PROGRAM, AND
00:52:19I WOULD WANT TO COME BACK NEXT YEAR AND BECOME A STAFF.
00:52:25
00:52:37>>HI. I'M JUSTIN. I HAVE LEARNED A LOT FROM Y.L.F.
00:52:45NOT ONLY ABOUT MY OWN DISABILITY, BUT ABOUT THE
00:52:49FRIENDS HERE, THEIR DISABILITIES, AND THE FRIENDS
00:52:55THAT I HAVE BACK HOME WITH THEIR DISABILITIES.
00:53:00AND THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE SHARED THE LIFE, THE
00:53:10DISABILITY LIKE CHANGING THEIR LIFE AND THAT,
00:53:13THAT IS GOING TO MAKE A WHOLE IMPACT ON MY LIFE,
00:53:15BECAUSE I KNOW HOW THEY DID IT. AND I CAN GO AND
00:53:20APPLY IT TO MY LIFE, AND WITH MY OWN DISABILITY THAT
00:53:25I HAVE AND MAKE THAT SAME CHANGE THAT THEY DID.
00:53:31
00:53:37
00:53:43
00:53:51
00:53:52>>HI. I'M OLGA CASTRO. THIS IS MY FIRST TIME EVER AT Y.L.F.
00:53:59SO FAR, I HAD THE GREATEST TIME OF MY LIFE HERE.
00:54:02HAVING A DISABILITY IS GREAT. AND BEING HERE, I HAVE
00:54:06MADE A LOT OF FRIENDS. AND I HAVE SHOWN MY ARTWORK

00:55:08
00:55:13>>IS THIS MIKE ON? MY NAME IS EVAN. WHAT I REALLY
00:55:17LEARNED FROM THIS EXPERIENCE AT Y.L.F. IS I LEARNED
00:55:20NOT TO TREAT MY DISABILITY AS A BARRIER BUT PERHAPS
00:55:23SOMETHING I CAN LEARN FROM, HOW TO ACCEPT IT AND
00:55:27MAKE IT PART OF MY LIFE. AND I'VE ALSO MET SOME
00:55:33PRETTY GOOD PEOPLE HERE. I REALLY LIKE THE ACTIVITIES.
00:55:36I HOPE TO COME BACK NEXT YEAR AS A STAFF VOLUNTEER.
00:55:42
00:55:48>>I'M BETHIE. I'VE MET A LOT OF GOOD PEOPLE HERE AT
00:55:52Y.L.F. I LIKED THE ACTIVITIES THEY HAD. AND I FEEL LIKE

00:56:05AND THAT I CAN ACHIEVE MY DREAMS, TOO.
00:56:11
00:56:17
00:56:20>>HI. MY NAME IS CORRINE. AND OF COURSE, HAVING
00:56:25A DISABILITY HAS BEEN HARD THING ON MY LIFE
00:56:27SOMETIMES, BUT MY MOM, SHE TAUGHT ME NOT TO
00:56:29USE MY DISABILITY AS A CRUTCH. THAT'S BASICALLY
00:56:32WHAT I'VE RELEARNED HERE. I'VE LEARNED A WHOLE LOT
00:56:41HERE. I LEARNED ABOUT SOME RESOURCES THAT CAN
00:56:42HELP ME OUT. Y.L.F. IS VERY GREAT AND IT HAS TAUGHT
00:56:47ME A WHOLE LOT. I'M VERY EXCITED TO BE HERE. IT'S
00:56:58BEEN A WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE FOR ME.
00:57:04
00:57:10
00:57:14>>HELLO, EVERYONE. I'M JOHN, IF YOU DON'T KNOW ME
00:57:15BY NOW. THIS HAS BEEN MY ONE OF THE MOST GREATEST
00:57:18EXPERIENCES FOR ME, BECAUSE THIS IS MY FIRST YEAR
00:57:21HERE. I LEARNED A LOT. I LEARNED TO BE A BETTER
00:57:26LEADER, EVEN THOUGH I FEEL LIKE I AM BEING A BETTER
00:57:29LEADER, JUST KEEP GETTING BETTER AND BETTER.
00:57:31I LEARNED NOT TO LEAVE ANYONE ALONE. JUST HELP
00:57:36THEM OUT IF THEY NEED HELP. I'M REALLY BLESSED TO
00:57:40HAVE KNOWN STEPHEN, JACKIE, AND EVERYONE HERE.
00:57:44AND THE DANCE WAS EVEN GREAT. I'M GOING TO TRY
00:57:48BACK AS STAFF NEXT YEAR. I REALLY DON'T KNOW.
00:57:50WE'LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS. THANK YOU, AND HAVE A
00:57:54GOOD REST OF THE DAY.
00:58:00
00:58:06
00:58:10>>HI, EVERYBODY. IS THIS MIKE ON? AWESOME.
00:58:17MY TIME HERE AT THE YOUTH LEADERSHIP FORUM HAS
00:58:21ACTUALLY BEEN PRETTY AWESOME. I MET A LOT OF
00:58:25PEOPLE THAT CHANGED THE WAY I LOOK AT LIFE.
00:58:29AND ESPECIALLY IT IS INTERESTING BECAUSE I ACTUALLY
00:58:31LEARNED A LOT ABOUT MYSELF AND OTHERS AND
00:58:33HOW IT CAN BECOME A BETTER LEADER. MY EXPERIENCE
00:58:35HERE HAS ACTUALLY HELPED ME LEARN HOW TO BE
00:58:39HONEST AND A BETTER MAN. BECAUSE THOSE ARE THE
00:58:41THINGS THAT I VALUE THE MOST IN OTHERS. THANK YOU.
00:58:47
00:58:53
00:58:57>>HI. MY NAME'S MICHAEL MOTLEY. I JUST WANT TO
00:58:59THANK EVERYONE FOR COMING HERE, STUFF LIKE THAT,
00:59:02BECAUSE -- AND THANKING THE OSU SWIM TEAM AND
00:59:05ALL THOSE PEOPLE. AND THE GREAT STAFF THAT CAME
00:59:08HERE. IT KEPT ME OUT OF TROUBLE FOR ONCE AND
00:59:10THAT'S A HARD THING TO DO. BUT EVEN SO, WE'RE STILL
00:59:14ORNERY, HAVING A LOT OF FUN.
00:59:16BUT, YEAH, THANKS, EVERYONE. NEXT?
00:59:22
00:59:28
00:59:33>>HELLO. I AM PETER JAMES. AND, WELL, I FOUND
00:59:36THAT THIS FORUM HAS HELPED ME UNDERSTAND MORE
00:59:40ABOUT MYSELF, AND I'VE ACTUALLY FOUND OUT THERE
00:59:48ARE A LOT MORE PEOPLE WITH THE SAME DISABILITIES,
00:59:52OR EVEN WORSE DISABILITIES THAN I HAVE. AND I DIDN'T
00:59:55KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE DISABILITIES IN THE
00:59:58WORLD. I SHARE A LOT OF THE SENTIMENTS OF THE
01:00:00PEOPLE WHO HAVE SPOKEN BEFORE, INCLUDING THAT
01:00:05I DO HOPE TO BECOME A STAFF MEMBER AT SOME POINT.
01:00:10BUT I HAVE ENJOYED MY TIME HERE. AND I REALLY HOPE
01:00:14TO BE SEEING THIS PLACE AGAIN.
01:00:20
01:00:26
01:00:27>>MY NAME IS TYLER. AND I HAD FUN HERE WITH
01:00:29THE STAFF AND WITH SOME FRIENDS I MADE. AND IT
01:00:34WAS MUCH FUN BEING HERE. NEXT YEAR,
01:00:37I WISH I COULD COME BACK AS STAFF.
01:00:43
01:00:55
01:00:58>>HI. I'M DANTE. I HAD A WONDERFUL WEEK HERE.
01:01:02I MET A LOT OF NEW FRIENDS. HI, CHELSEA. I HAD A
01:01:07WONDERFUL WEEK. I JUST LOVE HOW WE ALL GOT
01:01:12TOGETHER AS ONE. WE DIDN'T CARE ABOUT WHO SAID
01:01:15WHAT. WE JUST HAD A WONDERFUL, BLESSED WEEK.
01:01:19I JUST WANT TO SAY THANKS TO YOU GUYS.
01:01:25
01:01:29>>HI. I'M JIMMY. MY EXPERIENCE HERE AT Y.L.F.
01:01:31HAS BEEN FUN. I'M GOING TO TRY NOT TO CRY,
01:01:34BUT I HOPE TO COME BACK NEXT YEAR AS STAFF.
01:01:38AND I LOVE EVERYBODY HERE THAT I'VE MET THIS
01:01:46WEEK. BYE.
01:01:52
01:01:57>>HI. I'D LIKE TO THANK ALL THE STAFF AND ALL
01:02:02OF THE VOLUNTEERS FOR PUTTING THIS THING ON.
01:02:03IT WAS A GREAT EVENT. I CAN'T WAIT TO COME
01:02:05BACK NEXT YEAR AS A STAFF PERSON.
01:02:11
01:02:14>>HELLO. MY NAME IS DEVON MARCUM.
01:02:17AND I WANT TO TELL YOU ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE
01:02:20HERE. WELL, I FIRST WAS NOMINATED BY MY SPECIAL
01:02:26ED TEACHER, NAMED MISS KIMBERLY REGGIE.
01:02:30I'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN WHAT SHE'S DONE
01:02:34FOR ME AND HOW SHE HAS IMPROVED MY LIFE.
01:02:38I FEEL LIKE SHE'S MY MOTHER, BASICALLY. AND I
01:02:42WAS SO HAPPY, I CRIED, ACTUALLY, WHEN I GOT
01:02:47CONSIDERED. AND THEN THE REAL CRYING STARTED
01:02:51WHENEVER I GOT ACCEPTED. SO I BALLED.
01:02:59I BALLED, SERIOUSLY. AND THIS EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN
01:03:05SO NEW FOR ME. IT'S BEEN SO ORIGINAL. THE SEE, I'M
01:03:12NOT THE MOST SOCIAL PERSON, I GUESS. BECAUSE,
01:03:19LIKE, YOU KNOW, I'D RATHER STAY AT HOME THAN GO
01:03:24OUT WITH MY FRIENDS OR SOMETHING. AND I MET SO
01:03:30MANY NEW PEOPLE HERE, AND SPECIAL PEOPLE.
01:03:35AND I KNOW THAT WE'LL STAY FRIENDS FOR LIFE.
01:03:38BECAUSE WITH WE ALL HAVE THE SAME CONNECTION.
01:03:41AND IT IS A SPECIAL CONNECTION. I LEARNED THAT MY
01:03:45DISABILITY IS NOTHING OTHER THAN OPPORTUNITY.
01:03:49AND THOSE LOOKS THAT I GET, THEY'RE NOTHING MORE
01:03:55THAN PEOPLE JUST BEING JEALOUS OF THE WAY I HAVE
01:04:02THIS OPPORTUNITY AND I CAN DO GREAT THINGS.
01:04:08
01:04:14
01:04:18>>HI. MY NAME IS BIANCA. I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT
01:04:21I MET A LOT OF NEW PEOPLE HERE AND I HAD A GREAT
01:04:24TIME AND I ENJOYED MEETING A LOT OF PEOPLE.
01:04:26I LIKE THE STAFF HERE, AS WELL. AND I WOULD LIKE
01:04:33TO COME HERE NEXT YEAR.
01:04:39
01:04:45
01:04:50>>HI. MY NAME IS ARNETRA. I'M KIND OF NERVOUS,
01:04:57YOU KNOW. SINCE I CAME TO THIS PROGRAM, I WAS
01:05:00KIND OF NERVOUS, BECAUSE I DIDN'T KNOW NOBODY,
01:05:05OR THAT MANY PEOPLE. THIS PROGRAM OPENED ME UP.
01:05:09I FEEL LIKE I HAD A GOOD OPPORTUNITY OF BEING
01:05:13HERE. I LOVE EVERYBODY HERE EQUALLY.
01:05:17I JUST WANT TO THANK THE STAFF MEMBERS FOR
01:05:22DOING THIS FOR ME AND GIVING ME A GOOD
01:05:26OPPORTUNITY. I HAD FUN BEING HERE. AND FOR THOSE
01:05:33THAT ENCOURAGE US TO PUSH OURSELF AND TO BE
01:05:38POSITIVE AND ALL THAT. I JUST HAD A GOOD EXPERIENCE
01:05:41HERE. I HAD FUN BEING HERE. I WOULD LIKE TO COME
01:05:50BACK AS A STAFF MEMBER, IF I CAN, IF I GOT THE
01:05:56OPPORTUNITY. BECAUSE I JUST GRADUATED HIGH
01:06:01SCHOOL, AND I'M GOING TO COLLEGE AND STUFF.
01:06:05SO I JUST WANT TO THANK YOU Y'ALL FOR EVERYTHING.
01:06:11
01:06:17
01:06:19>>HELLO. MY NAME IS NATHAN. PERSONALLY FOR Y.L.F.,
01:06:25IT HAS REALLY CHANGED MY EXPERIENCE, AS FAR AS
01:06:29SHOWING LEADERSHIP, SHOWING YOUR ADVOCACY SKILLS,
01:06:33AND GETTING TO MEET NEW PEOPLE HERE.
01:06:37FIRST THING I WOULD LIKE TO SAY IS I WANT TO
01:06:39THANK THE STAFF FOR DOING SUCH A GREAT JOB WITH
01:06:42THE PROGRAM. THIS HAS REALLY BEEN A LIFE CHANGING
01:06:45EXPERIENCE FOR ME. AND I HAVE TO THANK EACH AND
01:06:49EVERY ONE OF THE DELEGATES FOR BEING SUCH GOOD
01:06:53PEOPLE, GOOD FRIENDS. THERE IS ALWAYS A SPECIAL
01:06:56PLACE RIGHT HERE. THIS IS SOMETHING I WILL NEVER
01:07:00FORGET, EVER. BUT -- HOLD ON. BUT FINALLY, THOUGH,
01:07:03I REALLY HAVE TO SAY THIS, THOUGH. NEVER, EVER LET
01:07:13A DISABILITY PUT YOU DOWN FOR WHO YOU ARE. YOU
01:07:17CAN ALWAYS DO WHAT OTHER PEOPLE CAN DO IN LIFE.
01:07:21THANK YOU.
01:07:27
01:07:33
01:07:33>>HELLO. MY NAME IS JANIKA. EVER SINCE I CAME TO
01:07:38Y.L.F., I'VE JUST LIKED BEING HERE. I'VE BEEN HERE
01:07:44BEFORE WHEN MY PARENTS DROPPED OFF MY SISTER.
01:07:48AND SO I APPLIED FOR THIS YEAR, AND I GOT IN.
01:07:52AND I WAS GLAD. IF I MAY MAKE A SUGGESTION,
01:07:59THAT Y.L.F. SHOULD BE INFORMED TO ALL HIGH SCHOOLS.
01:08:09BECAUSE THE SCHOOL THAT I WAS AT, THEY NEVER
01:08:12BROUGHT UP Y.L.F. SO I THINK IF THEY WOULD PUT IT
01:08:17AROUND TO SCHOOLS FOR PEOPLE THAT HAS DISABILITIES,
01:08:23WE CAN SET A NEW RECORDS, FOR ONE THING.
01:08:27AND THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE DISABILITIES THAT COME
01:08:32TO Y.L.F. WILL FEEL BETTER ABOUT THEMSELVES.
01:08:37THEY CAN BE A GOOD PERSON, AND THEY CAN BE
01:08:39SOMEBODY, NO MATTER HOW HARD PEOPLE FUN OF
01:08:43THEM. WE'RE NOT FREAKS. WE'RE NORMAL PEOPLE.
01:08:47WE'RE ONE AND THE SAME.
01:08:53
01:08:59
01:09:03>>MY NAME IS STEVE MEYER. THE EXPERIENCE HAS
01:09:16BEEN GOOD. I WANT TO COME BACK FOR NEXT YEAR.
01:09:31I WILL HELP TO PUT THE FIRE OUT. I WILL BE LEADER
01:10:05WITH THE BOY SCOUTS.
01:10:11
01:10:35
01:10:41>>ANYONE ELSE? I'VE GOT THE MICROPHONE NOW.
01:10:45YOU'RE NOT GETTING IT BACK. ABOUT 14 YEARS AGO,
01:10:53TWO PEOPLE FROM THE GOVERNOR'S COUNCIL WENT
01:10:55TO CALIFORNIA TO CHECK OUT THIS CALIFORNIA YOUTH
01:10:58LEADERSHIP FORUM. THEY SAID, THIS PROGRAM'S
01:11:02REALLY AWESOME, WE NEED TO BRING THIS TO OHIO.
01:11:05WE HAVE NO MONEY. NO PLACE TO DO IT.
01:11:07AND NO STAFF. LET'S DO IT ANYWAYS. THOSE TWO
01:11:15PEOPLE, DR. BILL BAUER, AND MAUREEN FITZGERALD,
01:11:21SAID, ALL RIGHT, WE WILL BRING IT BACK TO GOVERNOR'S
01:11:24COUNCIL. WE WILL MAKE IT WORK. JUST MAKE IT WORK.
01:11:27DR. BILL BAUER WROTE A LETTER FOR THE DELEGATES,
01:11:32SINCE HE WAS NOT ABLE TO BE HERE, AND HE HAS
01:11:37ASKED IN HE TO READ IT. I WILL DO MY BEST TO DO
01:11:39BILL'S LETTER JUSTICE FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO KNOW
01:11:44BILL. THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T, YOU WILL GET TO
01:11:47KNOW HIM A LITTLE BIT. WHO GUARANTEES TOMORROW?
01:11:50JUST DO IT. AFTER LISTENING TO THAT CATCHY NIKE
01:11:54SLOGAN FOR YEARS, I HAVE COME TO THE DETERMINATION
01:12:01THAT THIS SLOGAN REALLY DOES WORK. MANY TIMES AS
01:12:05A STUDENT, A FORMER COMPETITIVE SWIMMER, AND AN
01:12:09ADVOCATE, I HAVE USED THAT SLOGAN TO FORCE ME
01:12:14TO DO THINGS WITHOUT PROCRASTINATION.
01:12:16AND I HAVE BEEN ONE TO PROCRASTINATE FOR YEARS.
01:12:21THE Y.L.F. PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO GIVE ALL OF YOU

01:12:38WHEN YOU LEAVE THIS UNFORGETTABLE FORUM, YOU
01:12:40NEED TO START YOUR DREAM. NOT IN THE NEAR OR
01:12:46DISTANT FUTURE. NOW. NOT TOMORROW.
01:12:51YOU'VE GAINED THE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND
01:12:56FRIENDSHIP WEEK THAT MANY OF US OLDER -- OLDER
01:13:02THAN ME -- OLDER PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES WISH WE
01:13:04HAD WHEN WE WERE YOUNGER. THE Y.L.F.
01:13:09FORUM STARTED IN 1999 WITH 20 DELEGATES.
01:13:11VERY, VERY SMALL, NOTHING LIKE THIS. I PROMISE YOU,
01:13:14IT DIDN'T LOOK LIKE THIS. AND FROM ALL OVER OHIO.
01:13:21THE FORUM WAS RELYING ON VOLUNTEERS. YES, THE
01:13:25PEOPLE IN THE GRAY VOLUNTEER TO BE HERE WITH
01:13:29YOU. WE DO NOT GET PAID. FROM DONATIONS AND

01:13:48TIME NOW TO SHOW YOUR APPRECIATION TO A DELEGATE

01:13:56WEEK MEANT TO YOU. TAKE FIVE MINUTES TO DO THIS.
01:14:01IF NOT NOW, WHEN? WHO GUARANTEES TOMORROW?
01:14:07JUST DO IT. PEACE, LOVE, HAPPINESS.
01:14:12DR. BILL AND MAUREEN FROM AFAR.
01:14:18
01:14:30
01:14:33>>WHAT IS LEFT TO SAY? IT'S BEEN A FANTASTIC WEEK.
01:14:39I AM SO TIRED OF THAT. BUT IT WILL BE WITH ME FOR
01:14:46THE REST OF MY LIFE, SO I BETTER EMBRACE IT.
01:14:49I WANT TO LEAVE SOMETHING WITH YOU. AND IT IS A
01:14:53POEM. BECAUSE I WAS THINKING ABOUT ALL OF THE
01:14:56THINGS THAT WE TALKED ABOUT THIS WEEK. I WAS
01:14:58THINKING ABOUT HOW WE SPOKE ABOUT HAVING YOUR
01:15:03OWN VOICE AND MAKING SURE THAT IF YOU HAPPEN TO
01:15:08BE THE ONLY PERSON IN THE ROOM WITH A DISABILITY,
01:15:13WHETHER IT IS SEEN OR UNSEEN, THAT YOU MAKE SURE
01:15:17THAT VOICE IS HEARD. I WANT TO LEAVE YOU WITH A
01:15:20POEM THAT I LEARNED WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE.
01:15:22I HOPE I CAN STILL REMEMBER IT, BECAUSE FOR
01:15:24THOSE THAT DON'T KNOW, I'M GETTING KIND OF OLD.
01:15:27BUT IT GOES LIKE THIS. IF YOU THINK YOU'RE BEAT,
01:15:31YOU ARE. IF YOU LIKE TO WIN, YOU CAN'T,
01:15:39IF YOU THINK YOU'LL LOSE YOU'VE LOST. FOR OUT
01:15:44IN THE WORLD YOU WILL FIND, SUCCESS BEGINS
01:15:49WITH A PERSON'S WILL. IT IS ALL IN THE STATE OF MIND.
01:15:53IF YOU THINK YOU'LL LOSE YOU'VE LOST. IF YOU THINK
01:15:56YOU'RE BEATER YOU ARE. YOU'VE GOT TO THINK HOW
01:15:58TO RISE. YOU'VE GOT TO BE SURE OF YOUR SELF BEFORE
01:16:00YOU CAN EVER WIN A PRIZE. LIFE'S BATTLES DON'T
01:16:04ALWAYS GO TO THE STRONGER NOR FASTER MAN,
01:16:07BUT SOONER OR LATER, THE ONE WHO WILL WIN IS
01:16:09THE ONE WHO THINKS THEY CAN. DO YOU THINK
01:16:13YOU CAN WIN? CAN I WIN? SAY IT, I CAN WIN.
01:16:18>>I CAN WIN.
01:16:20>>I AM PROUD OF EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU HERE
01:16:21TODAY. I WISH YOU COULD STAY WITH ME FOREVER.
01:16:23I THINK WE HAVE A DIFFICULT ROAD AHEAD OF US.
01:16:29WE HAD ABOUT 50 PEOPLE WHO WANTED TO COME
01:16:31BACK AS STAFF. I DON'T KNOW IF WE CAN ACCOMMODATE
01:16:32YOU ALL. BUT IT SPEAKS VOLUMES ABOUT THE PROGRAM.
01:16:35I WANT TO THANK ALL OF YOU. I WANT YOU TO HAVE A
01:16:39WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE. YOU STILL HAVE TIME TO MIX
01:16:42AND MINGLE. WE HAVE TYSON HERE THAT HAS GRACIOUSLY
01:16:44STAYED WITH US AND HAD A CHANCE TO FINALLY EAT. I
01:16:50YOU THINK YOU'RE OPEN TO SIGNING AUTOGRAPHS, HE SAID.
01:16:55>>ABSOLUTELY.
01:16:57>>HE IS GOING TO SPEND SOME TIME WITH US.
01:16:59SO DO THAT. CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYBODY.
