00:00:05TIME. (APPLAUSE.) WE NEED YOU
GUYS TO COME TO THE OHIO STATE
00:00:15GAMES TO GET THE CROWD REALLY
FIRED UP. LET ME WELCOME ALL OF
00:00:19YOU TO A VERY SPECIAL DAY FOR
ALL OF US WHO ARE ADVOCATES FOR
00:00:25INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES AS
WE KICK OFF THE NATIONAL
00:00:29DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS
MONTH EVENT. AND THERE'S A FEW
00:00:34PEOPLE I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT
I RECOGNIZE BECAUSE TO HAVE AN
00:00:37EVENT LIKE THIS, ALTHOUGH IT
LOOKS LIKE IT RUNS REALLY
00:00:41SMOOTH, IT DOES, AND IT'S
BECAUSE OF A FEW PEOPLE THAT I
00:00:45WANT TO MAKE SURE GET
RECOGNIZED. OUR COMMUNICATION
00:00:48STAFF, SHIRLEY MARCHI, DIANE
CORN AND BRAD REYNOLDS HAVE DONE
00:00:55A GREAT JOB WITH THIS. SO LET'S
GIVE THEM A ROUND OF APPLAUSE.
00:00:59(APPLAUSE.) NOW, UNLESS YOU GUYS
HAVE BEEN LIVING UNDER A ROCK,
00:01:10IT IS THE ELECTION SEASON, AND
THE GOVERNOR WANTED TO BE HERE
00:01:16AND PLANNED ON BEING HERE, BUT
HE'S GOT A FEW PEOPLE IN TOWN
00:01:22THAT HE HAS TO MAKE SURE THAT HE
WELCOMES. SO THERE'S A FEW
00:01:25THINGS HE WANTED TO MAKE SURE
THAT I PASSED ALONG. I ALSO WANT
00:01:29TO MAKE SURE THAT I RECOGNIZE
REPRESENTATIVE ROBERT HACKETT
00:01:32WHO IS HERE IN THE BACK OF THE
ROOM. WE APPRECIATE YOUR
00:01:35SUPPORT, REPRESENTATIVE.
(APPLAUSE.) TOM MOE IS GOING TO
00:01:44BE SAYING A FEW WORDS FROM
VETERAN SERVICES. (APPLAUSE.)
00:01:53OUR COMMISSIONERS, JACQUI
ROMER-SENSKY, CYNTHIA REESE AND
00:01:56DAVID DOCKERTY. (APPLAUSE.) AND
WE HAVE SOME OF OUR GOVERNOR'S
00:02:05COUNCIL ON PEOPLE WITH
DISABILITIES FOLKS WHO ARE HERE.
00:02:10FOR THOSE WHO ARE HERE, PLEASE
STAND AND BE RECOGNIZED.
00:02:15(APPLAUSE.) YOU KNOW, IT WAS A
VERY EXCITING TIME HOPEFULLY FOR
00:02:22SOME OF YOU WHO CAME TO OUR
EVENT LAST MONTH. WE KIND OF
00:02:25LOOKED AT THAT AS A PRECURSOR.
WE HAD OUR VERY FIRST DISABILITY
00:02:29JOB SITE. AND IT WAS REALLY A
CHANGE IN DIRECTION FOR HOW
00:02:34REHAB SERVICES COMMISSION IS
TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE
00:02:38ENGAGING BUSINESSES AND MAKING
SURE WE'RE LISTENING TO WHAT
00:02:42BUSINESSES HAVE TO OFFER AND HOW
WE CAN PLAY A PART IN THAT. AND
00:02:47THE GOVERNOR HAS SAID ON MANY
OCCASIONS THAT THE PRIORITY OF
00:02:51HIS ADMINISTRATION IS JOBS. HE
ALSO RECOGNIZES THAT A LARGE
00:02:56PART OF THAT HAS TO BE
INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES.
00:03:01AND YOU KNOW, AT RSC, IN THE
HISTORY OF OUR EXISTENCE, I
00:03:05DON'T THINK THERE'S BEEN A
GOVERNOR WHO'S ATTENDED AN EVENT
00:03:09QUITE LIKE WE HAD LAST MONTH,
AND BEING A PART OF THE CABINET
00:03:14AND SITTING THERE AND TALKING
AND BEING ABLE TO ESTABLISH
00:03:17RELATIONSHIPS WITH INDIVIDUALS
LIKE COLONEL MOE AND SOME OF THE
00:03:21FOLK LIKE JOHN MARTIN WHO YOU
CAN'T GET MUCH BETTER PEOPLE
00:03:25THAN THOSE TWO FOLKS, WE'RE
LEARNING A LOT MORE ABOUT WHAT
00:03:29IT MEANS TO PARTNER. THE
GOVERNOR TALKS ALL THE TIME
00:03:33ABOUT BREAKING DOWN SILOS AND A
LOT OF TIME PEOPLE TALK ABOUT
00:03:37BREAKING DOWN SILOS. BUT WHEN
THE GOVERNOR FORCES US TO SIT
00:03:41NEXT TO ONE ANOTHER AND SAYS YOU
WILL FIGURE OUT A WAY TO DO
00:03:45THIS, IT'S NOT FOR A LACK THAT
WE DON'T WANT TO. WE KNOW NOW WE
00:03:48HAVE SOME SUPPORT TO MAKE
DECISIONS, TO MAKE SURE THAT
00:03:51WE'RE KEEPING THE CORE THING
THAT ALL OF US ARE DOING THIS
00:03:55FOR, WHICH IS THE INDIVIDUALS
WITH DISABILITIES, OUR
00:03:59CONSUMERS. I WANT TO MAKE SURE
THAT AS WE KICK THIS OFF, I WANT
00:04:05TO MAKE SURE TOWARDS THE END OF
THIS EVENT WE HAVE A FEW THINGS
00:04:07WE WANT TO MAKE SURE WE
RECOGNIZE WITH OUR BUSINESSES. I
00:04:11WANT TO MAKE SURE I RECOGNIZE
THEM. BECAUSE WITHOUT THEM WE'RE
00:04:13NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO LET
FOLKS KNOW THAT WHEN YOU HIRE AN
00:04:17INDIVIDUAL THAT HAS A
DISABILITY, YOU'RE PROBABLY
00:04:20GOING TO GET AN INDIVIDUAL WHO
IS MORE DEDICATED, WHO'S GOING
00:04:24TO MISS LESS WORK, WHO'S GOING
TO SMILE WHEN MOST PEOPLE DON'T
00:04:28WANT TO SMILE, AND THEY'RE
ACTUALLY MORE PRODUCTIVE. AND
00:04:33I'M NOT JUST SAYING THAT BECAUSE
I HAVE A SON WITH A DISABILITY
00:04:36AND I WORK AT A SOCIAL SERVICE
AGENCY THAT HELPS INDIVIDUALS
00:04:40WITH DISABILITIES, BUT ASK THESE
BUSINESSES WHO ARE HERE TODAY
00:04:42WHO HAVE ENGAGED IN HIRING THESE
FOLKS. LET'S FACE IT, THEIR JOB
00:04:47IS TO MAKE MONEY FOR THEIR
STOCKHOLDERS. THEY WOULDN'T BE
00:04:50DOING THIS IF THEY WEREN'T
MAKING MONEY. SO WE NEED TO MAKE
00:04:53SURE THAT WE SHOW THAT WE CAN BE
JUST AS PROFITABLE AND HELPFUL,
00:04:58AND THIS IS A LARGE MARKET THAT
IS UNTAPPED. AND THESE ARE GREAT
00:05:02THINGS THAT WE'RE DOING HERE IN
OHIO. SO WITH THAT I WOULD LIKE
00:05:05TO ASK COLONEL TOM MOE TO COME
UP AND JUST MAKE A FEW BRIEF
00:05:09REMARKS ABOUT OUR VETERANS
RETURNING TO OHIO. COLONEL MOE.
00:05:16(APPLAUSE.) >>>: THANK YOU ALL
FOR BEING MERE TODAY. THANKS SO
00:05:23MUCH, KEVIN, FOR HAVING ME AND
SO MUCH FOR WHAT RSC IS DOING
00:05:27SERVICES AROUND THE STATE, AND
YOU MAY NOT KNOW THAT THE WHOLE
00:05:34PROGRAM IS REALLY A RESULT OF A
VETERANS PROGRAM, THE GI BILL
00:05:38THAT WAS SET UP AFTER WORLD WAR
II, A HISTORIC EVENT THAT NOT
00:05:42ONLY DID THIS FOR US, BUT
PROVIDED EDUCATION FOR SO MANY
00:05:47OF OUR GI'S RETURNING FROM WORLD
WAR II AND TRANSFORMED THE U.S.
00:05:52INTO THE COUNTRY IT IS TODAY. 16
MILLION PEOPLE CAME HOME FROM
00:05:57WORLD WAR II THAT WE'RE TAKING
CARE OF THROUGH DIFFERENT
00:06:01PROGRAMS. SO I JUST WANTED TO
SAY A FEW WORDS ABOUT HIRING
00:06:05VETERANS IN PARTICULAR, WHY IT
IS SO MUCH THE RIGHT THING TO DO
00:06:11FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS. IT'S
THE RIGHT DECISION FOR EMPLOYERS
00:06:15TO START OFF WITH. YOU'RE
TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE WHO ARE
00:06:18WELL TRAINED. THEY'RE TRAINED
ACCORDING TO THE HIGHEST LEVELS,
00:06:22THE MOST MODERN MEANS, AND
TRAINED IN SOME OF THE KEY --
00:06:27THE MOST IMPORTANT AND KEY
SKILLS THAT THERE ARE, COMPUTERS
00:06:30AND THE LIKE, TECHNOLOGY,
ENGINEERING, EVEN EQUIPMENT
00:06:35OPERATORS. THERE'S NO WAY THAT
-- IT'S LIKE SEVEN YEARS AGO
00:06:39WHAT THE MILITARY MAY HAVE BEEN
LESS ADVANCED TECHNOLOGICALLY AS
00:06:44IT IS TODAY. SO YOU'RE TALKING
WELL TRAINED PEOPLE WITH KEY
00:06:48SKILLS. YOU'RE ALSO TALKING
ABOUT PEOPLE WHO ARE
00:06:50DISCIPLINED. THE WHOLE MILITARY
ENVIRONMENT IS ONE OF DISCIPLINE
00:06:53TO BE ABLE TO COUNT ON THE
INDIVIDUALS TO DO WHAT THEY'RE
00:06:58TOLD, WHEN THEY'RE TOLD, AND IN
THE WAY THEY WERE TRAINED TO DO
00:07:01IT. AND ALSO YOU CAN IMAGINE,
ESPECIALLY IN COMBAT OR VERY
00:07:06DEMANDING SITUATIONS, THESE
PEOPLE ARE USED TO WORKING UNDER
00:07:09STRESS. THEY PERFORM WELL UNDER
STRESS. IT'S ACTUALLY PART OF
00:07:12THE TRAINING. AND THEY OPERATE
UNDER THAT ENVIRONMENT EVERY
00:07:16DAY. AND OF COURSE IT IS THE
RIGHT THING TO DO. THESE PEOPLE
00:07:23WHO HAVE SIGNED UP FOR THE
MILITARY TO GO OFF AND SERVE OUR
00:07:25COUNTRY, TO SERVE YOU, TO
MAINTAIN OUR PEACE, TO KEEP THE
00:07:30FIGHT AGAINST THE ENEMIES OVER
THERE AND NOT HERE, IT'S THE
00:07:36RIGHT THING TO DO TO HONOR THEIR
SERVICE. BUT YOU KNOW THERE ARE
00:07:40BARRIERS, AND OF COURSE WE'RE
MEETING TODAY TO TALK ABOUT WHAT
00:07:44CAN BE ONE OF THE MOST
SIGNIFICANT BARRIERS, AND THAT
00:07:48IS OFTEN JUST ATTITUDES, DEALING
WITH A PERSON THAT MIGHT BE
00:07:52CLASSIFIED AS HAVING A
DISABILITY. AND I THINK THE WAY
00:07:59I LOOK AT THAT, A PERSON MIGHT
HAVE A DISABILITY BUT THEY'RE
00:08:03NOT DISABLED. THEY OPERATE, THEY
FUNCTION, AND THEY PERFORM IN
00:08:07SPITE OF THOSE THINGS THAT YOU
AND ME MIGHT BE CONSIDERED A,
00:08:12QUOTE, DISABILITY. AND
UNFORTUNATELY WE HAVE TO COPE
00:08:17SOMETIMES WITH A PUBLIC
PERCEPTION THAT MILITARY PEOPLE
00:08:22JUST BECAUSE MAYBE SOME ISOLATED
INCIDENTS THAT MAY BE
00:08:26PARTICULARLY FASHIONED TO
PORTRAY AN IMAGE OF VETERANS
00:08:31WHETHER THEY HAVE DISABILITIES
OR NOT THAT THEY'RE SOMEHOW
00:08:34DAMAGED BECAUSE OF THEIR
SERVICE, AND THAT'S EXACTLY ON
00:08:37THE CONTRARY, AND WE NEED TO
FIGHT THAT IMAGE AND TO
00:08:41UNDERSTAND THAT OUR VETERANS ARE
SOME OF THE MOST OUTSTANDING
00:08:43PEOPLE IN THE COUNTRY BECAUSE OF
THOSE THINGS THAT I'VE ALREADY
00:08:47MENTIONED. TO BE SURE, MANY,
MANY OF OUR VETERANS DEAL WITH
00:08:51INCREDIBLY SERIOUS INJURIES.
THERE'S NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT. AND
00:08:56ACTUALLY WITH TODAY'S
IMPROVEMENTS IN MEDICAL
00:09:00TREATMENT AND SO FORTH, WE HAVE
PEOPLE COMING OFF THE BATTLE
00:09:03FIELD THAT WOULD HAVE NEVER EVEN
SURVIVED THE FIRST HOUR OF BEING
00:09:06WOUNDED, AND THOSE PEOPLE NOT
ONLY SURVIVED BUT THEY'RE
00:09:09BROUGHT BACK INTO SOCIETY
PRODUCTIVITY. ISSUES SUCH AS
00:09:12TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY AND PTSD,
WHICH DIDN'T EVEN USED TO BE
00:09:18DIAGNOSED, THEY CALLED IT SHE
WILL SHOCK IN WORLD WAR II, GIVE
00:09:22THE PERSON AN ASPIRIN, SEND THEM
HOME AND THEY'LL BE FINE. AND
00:09:25WITH COUNSELING AND
UNDERSTANDING, MAYBE PUTTING
00:09:28TOGETHER WITH PEOPLE WITH FOLKS
THAT THEY TRUST, YOU CAN WORK
00:09:31THROUGH SOME ISSUES THEY MAY
HAVE DEVELOPED BECAUSE OF
00:09:35WORKING IN A STRESSFUL COMBAT
ENVIRONMENT. AND AMPUTATIONS.
00:09:41YOU KNOW, YOU LOOK AT THE
STATISTICS FROM THE CIVIL WAR.
00:09:44WE'RE HONORING 150 YEARS WHEN
THE CIVIL WAR STARTED A YEAR OR
00:09:48TWO AGO AND GOING THROUGH THE
ENTIRE HISTORY OF THAT WAR. AND
00:09:53THE CASUALTIES SUFFERED IN THAT
WAR, THE PEOPLE THAT DIED AS A
00:09:57RESULT OF THAT WAR TOTALED MORE
DEATHS THAN WE'VE EXPERIENCED IN
00:10:02ANY OF OUR WARS SINCE THEN
COMBINED. AND WHY IS THAT?
00:10:06BECAUSE MOST OF THEM JUST DIDN'T
SIMPLY SURVIVE THE WOUNDS,
00:10:10STOMACH INJURIES OR AMPUTATIONS.
IF THEY WERE INJURED, THEY WERE
00:10:14AS WELL AS DEAD AND INDEED
SOMETIMES WITHIN HOURS AND DAYS
00:10:17THEY WOULD PASS AWAY. BUT
TODAY'S MILITARY MEMBERS, JUST
00:10:23LIKE THOSE THAT SURVIVED THE
CIVIL WAR COPE. AND THAT'S
00:10:26ANOTHER QUALITY, COPING WITH
DISABILITIES. GEORGE WASHINGTON
00:10:32SAYS OUR WILLINGNESS FOR OUR
CITIZENS TO SERVE OUR COUNTRY IS
00:10:35OFTEN VERY MUCH INFLUENCED BY
HOW WE SUPPORT THEM, HOW WE TAKE
00:10:40CARE OF THEM. ABE LINCOLN ADDED
TO THAT JUST A FEW WEEKS BEFORE
00:10:45HE WAS MURDERED IN COLD BLOOD.
HE ADMONISHED THE AMERICAN
00:10:52PEOPLE THAT LOOKING INTO THE
HUGE CASUALTIES THAT HE
00:10:56WITNESSED IN THE CIVIL WAR,
WHICH WAS NOT QUITE WOUND UP
00:10:59YET, HE PLEDGED THAT WE WOULD
TAKE CARE OF OUR VETERANS AND
00:11:01THEIR WIDOWS AND THEIR CHILDREN.
YOU MAY NOTICE AS I SPEAK ABOUT
00:11:05ABE LINCOLN, THERE'S A PLAQUENIL
BEHIND THIS WONDERFUL TAC CHOIR
00:11:08-- THANK YOU, BY THE WAY FOR
YOUR SINGING TODAY, LOVED IT --
00:11:13THERE'S A PLAQUENIL NOT ONLY
HONORING LINCOLN BUT THE REASON
00:11:17IT'S ON THE WALL IS BECAUSE HE
STOOD THERE. HE WAS IN THIS
00:11:19BUILDING WHEN HE WAS NOTIFIED
THAT HE WON THE SECOND ELECTION.
00:11:26SO HE MADE THAT PLEDGE TO TAKE
CARE OF OUR VETERANS AND THEIR
00:11:30SPOUSES AND THEIR ORPHANS. AND I
END ON ONE NOTE OF PRAISE FOR MY
00:11:34FELLOW CITIZENS, OUR FELLOW
VETERANS, AND THAT IS WHAT I
00:11:40WITNESSED DOWN AT WALTER REED,
WHICH IS NOW PART OF THE
00:11:44BETHESDA MEDICAL COMPLEX IN
WASHINGTON. IF YOU WANTED
00:11:47INSPIRATION, IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN
INSPIRED BY NOW, AND I'M SURE
00:11:50YOU HAVE BEEN, IF YOU WANT
ADDITIONAL INSPIRATION, GO DOWN
00:11:53TO WALTER REED TO TAKE CARE OF
OUR MOST SERIOUSLY INJURED
00:11:59VETERANS AND WATCH THEM DURING
THE REHABILITATION. YOU WALK
00:12:04THROUGH A ROOM WHERE YOU SEE A
PERSON OVER THERE JUMPING ROPE
00:12:09AND YOU LOOK AND THE INDIVIDUAL
HAS ARTIFICIAL LEGS. YOU LOOK AT
00:12:13ANOTHER PERSON ENGAGED IN
JOGGING AROUND THE TRACK AND
00:12:17MAYBE THEY STARTED BY A HARNESS
THAT'S CONNECTED TO A TRACK IN
00:12:20THE CEILING TO HELP KEEP THEM
FROM FALLING OVER BECAUSE
00:12:23THEY'RE LEARNING NOT JUST TO
WALK BUT TO RUN ON ARTIFICIAL
00:12:27LEGS. SOME OF THESE LEGS ARE
ASSISTED WITH COMPUTERS TO HELP
00:12:31THEM KEEP THEIR BALANCE AND IT
GOES ON AND ON AND YOU'LL HEAR
00:12:35FROM AND SEE SOME OF THE GUESTS
IN THE ROOM WHO ARE SIMILARLY
00:12:39NOT ONLY COPING WITH THEIR
INJURIES BUT DOING SO WITH THEIR
00:12:42HEADS HELD HIGH AND PLEASED TO
BE A PRODUCTIVE MEMBER OF
00:12:46SOCIETY, LIKE WE ALL ARE. WE
HONOR THEM AND ALL OF YOU TODAY.
00:12:49I THANK YOU. KEVIN, I THANK YOU
FOR THE WORK YOU'RE DOING. GOD
00:12:53BLESS EACH ONE OF YOU AND GOD
BLESS THIS WONDERFUL COUNTRY.
00:12:57(APPLAUSE.) >>>: AND TO FOLLOW
UP JUST AN UNBELIEVABLE
00:13:08INDIVIDUAL WHO SERVED HIS
COUNTRY AND WAS A POW IN
00:13:13VIETNAM, COLONEL MOE, I THINK
IT'S ONLY APPROPRIATE THAT WE'RE
00:13:17GOING TO ASK THE SCHOOL OF THE
DEAF TO SING THE PLEDGE OF
00:13:21ALLEGIANCE. NO, THAT'S NOT WHAT
WE'RE GOING TO DO. SEE, NOW YOU
00:13:29KNOW WHY THEY RUN EVERYTHING.
WE'RE GOING TO DO THE NATIONAL
00:13:32ANTHEM. OKAY. NOW LET'S WELCOME
NOW LET'S WELCOME
00:15:46NOW LET'S WELCOME
CHILDREN FROM THE SCHOOL FOR THE
00:15:50DEAF AS THEY LEAD US IN THE
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE. LET'S GET
00:16:44LET'S
THEM A SIGN ROUND OF APPLAUSE.
00:18:43THANK YOU VERY MUCH. NEXT I HAVE
THE PLEASURE OF INTRODUCING
00:19:00JACQUI ROMER-SENSKY. I'VE HAD
THE GREAT PLEASURE OF KNOWING
00:19:06JACQUI FOR SOME TIME, AND SHE'S
BEEN INVOLVED IN ADVOCACY WELL
00:19:11BEFORE IT BECAME SHEIK TO BE AN
ADVOCATE IN THIS DAY AND AGE.
00:19:17JACQUI WORKED IN STATE
GOVERNMENT AS A DIRECTOR OF THE
00:19:21OLD HUMAN SERVICES, A PRECURSOR
TO JOBS AND FAMILY SERVICES. AND
00:19:26HAS BEEN A COMMISSIONER FOR SOME
TIME AND IS NOW THE CHAIRPERSON
00:19:29FOR OUR COMMISSION AND SHE'S A
GREAT LEADER AND A GREAT PERSON.
00:19:33SO PLEASE PUT YOUR HANDS
TOGETHER FOR JACQUI
00:19:37ROMER-SENSKY. (APPLAUSE.) >>>:
THANK YOU. THAT'S A PRETTY HARD
00:19:44ACT TO FOLLOW, I THINK. IT'S A
REAL HONOR TO BE HERE TODAY AT
00:19:48THIS IMPORTANT EVENT AND IT'S AN
HONOR EVERY DAY TO BE A MEMBER
00:19:51OF THE OHIO REHABILITATION
SERVICES COMMISSION. OUR MISSION
00:19:56EVERY DAY IS TO HELP PEOPLE WITH
DISABILITIES FIND EMPLOYMENT,
00:20:02IMPROVE THEIR FINANCIAL
SECURITY, AND CONTRIBUTE IN WAYS
00:20:05THAT THEY WANT TO CONTRIBUTE TO
AN EMPLOYER AND TO SOCIETY. AND
00:20:10AT THIS EVENT WE ARE REMINDED OF
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE BUSINESS
00:20:13COMMUNITY'S INVOLVEMENT IN
HELPING MAKE THAT MISSION
00:20:16SUCCEED. AND TO ALL OF OUR
BUSINESS PARTNERS WHO ARE HERE
00:20:20TODAY AND ALL OF OUR BUSINESS
PARTNERS WHO EVERY DAY GIVE
00:20:24PEOPLE A JOB AND AS DIRECTOR
MILLER SAID COME TO REALIZE IT
00:20:27WAS ONE OF THE SMARTEST
DECISIONS THEY EVER MADE, WE
00:20:31THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH FOR
MAKING THAT SMART MOVE. TODAY'S
00:20:36EVENT DOES REMIND US, THOUGH,
THAT OUR WORK ISN'T FINISHED AND
00:20:39THAT WE CONSTANTLY HAVE TO RAISE
AWARENESS THAT PEOPLE WITH
00:20:44DISABILITIES ARE LARGELY AN
UNTAPPED LABOR MARKET AND THAT
00:20:48THEY WANT TO WORK, THEY ARE MORE
THAN CAPABLE OF WORKING, AND
00:20:52THEY WILL BE THE KIND OF
EMPLOYEES THAT MAKE AN EMPLOYER
00:20:55PROUD AND CONTRIBUTE TO THEIR
BOTTOM LINE. WE NEED TO CONVERT
00:20:59MORE PEOPLE TO THIS WAY OF
THINKING SO THAT MORE PEOPLE
00:21:03WITH DISABILITIES HAVE A CHANCE
AT THAT JOB. TODAY'S EVENT DOES
00:21:07BUILD ON PREVIOUS ACTIONS,
RIGHT? WE'RE ALWAYS STANDING ON
00:21:11THE SHOULDERS OF SOMEONE ELSE,
SOMEONE WHO'S COME BEFORE. AS
00:21:14DIRECTOR MILLER RECENTLY ALLUDED
TO, WE DID RECENTLY HAVE AN OHIO
00:21:20DISABILITY JOB SUMMIT IN
SEPTEMBER. AND IT REALLY TURNED
00:21:23OUT TO BE A GREAT SUMMIT. FOR
THOSE OF YOU WHO WERE ABLE TO
00:21:27ATTEND, THOSE OF YOU WHO READ
ABOUT IT, IT WAS EVERYTHING WE
00:21:30HAD HOPED IT WOULD BE. THE OHIO
BUSINESS LEADERSHIP NETWORK
00:21:33TRULY DID PROVIDE LEADERSHIP AT
THIS EVENT. OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER
00:21:38WAS BETH BUTLER FROM LOWES. AND
OUR OTHER BUSINESS PARTNERS WHO
00:21:47WERE THERE NOT ONLY PARTICIPATED
AND SPONSORED EVENTS, BUT THEY
00:21:51LED WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS AND
WERE OUT TALKING TO EVERYONE WHO
00:21:56WAS THERE ABOUT WHAT THEY COULD
DO TO GET A JOB. AS DIRECTOR
00:22:01MILLER SAID, GOVERNOR KASICH
CAME AND SPOKE AND ALL OF YOU
00:22:04WHO HAVE HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF
BEING IN THE ROOM WITH GOVERNOR
00:22:07KASICH KNOWS THAT HE BROUGHT HIS
OWN BRAND OF ENTHUSIASM TO THE
00:22:11EVENT. AND HE WAS VERY CLEAR
THAT GETTING JOBS IS THE MISSION
00:22:16CRITICAL AND HE MEANS GETTING
JOBS FOR EVERYONE. MATCHING THAT
00:22:20RIGHT PERSON TO THAT RIGHT JOB.
AND HE URGED THE BUSINESS
00:22:24COMMUNITY TO TAP INTO THIS POOL
OF POTENTIAL EMPLOYEES WITH
00:22:28DISABILITIES AND HE CHARGED HIS
CABINET TO DO EVERYTHING TO BE
00:22:32OF ASSISTANCE. IT WAS A PRETTY
IMPRESSIVE SITE BECAUSE AT ONE
00:22:35POINT IN THE SUMMIT THERE WERE
NINE CABINET DIRECTORS SITTING
00:22:39UP ON STAGE TALKING ABOUT THIS
ISSUE. I'VE BEEN AROUND
00:22:42GOVERNMENT SINCE THE EARLY '80S.
I STARTED AT A VERY YOUNG AGE. I
00:22:46WAS SORT OF JUNIOR HIGHISH. BUT
I'VE NEVER SEEN NINE CABINET
00:22:51DIRECTORS SITTING ON ONE STAGE
TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE WITH
00:22:55DISABILITIES AND HOW WE GET THEM
JOBS BEFORE. SO IT REALLY WAS
00:22:58IMPRESSIVE. AND IT WILL EVEN BE
MORE IMPRESSIVE WHEN THEIR WORK
00:23:02SHOWS MORE RESULTS. SO GOING
FORWARD THERE IS MUCH LEFT TO BE
00:23:08DONE. EVERYONE IN THIS ROOM
KNOWS THAT. AND PART OF WHAT WE
00:23:11HAVE TO DO IS TAKE THE CHALLENGE
ON OF CONVERTING PEOPLE WHO ARE
00:23:14NOT IN THE ROOM TODAY OF GOING
OUT AND SPREADING OF WORD OF HOW
00:23:18IMPORTANT IT IS TO HELP PEOPLE
GET JOBS. YOU KNOW, WE CAN THROW
00:23:21A LOT OF BIG NUMBERS AROUND
ABOUT WHAT THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE
00:23:25IS OR WHAT THE STATISTIC IS FOR
A CERTAIN KIND OF DISABILITY TO
00:23:29MATCH UP TO A CERTAIN KIND OF
JOB. BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT
00:23:32NUMBER IN WHAT WE'RE TALKING
ABOUT TODAY IS ONE, BECAUSE IF
00:23:36YOU'RE THAT ONE PERSON WHO JUST
WANTS THAT ONE JOB, THAT'S ALL
00:23:41THAT MATTERS. AND EVERYONE HERE
HAS BEEN IN THAT POSITION AT
00:23:44SOME POINT IN YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU
WANTED THAT ONE JOB, YOU WERE
00:23:47GOING FOR IT, YOU'VE WATCHED
FRIENDS AND FAMILY IN THAT SAME
00:23:50SITUATION. WE NEED AND WANT
JOBS, ALL OF US. AND PEOPLE WITH
00:23:56DISABILITIES ARE NO DIFFERENT.
THEY HAVE SKILLS, THEY HAVE
00:24:00KNOWLEDGE, THEY HAVE COMMITMENT,
THEY WOULD BE JUST A GREAT
00:24:04EMPLOYEE AS YOU OR I. THEY WANT
TO EARN MONEY, THEY WANT TO
00:24:07CONTRIBUTE TO THE WORK FORCE,
THEY WANT TO BE PART OF WHAT THE
00:24:11REST OF US ARE PART OF WHO HAVE
A JOB, INCLUDING ABOUT
00:24:15COMPLAINING ABOUT GETTING UP IN
THE MORNING TO GO TO WORK EVERY
00:24:18DAY AND ALL THE OTHER STUFF THAT
GOES WITH IT. BUT YOU ALL WANT
00:24:20TO BE A PART OF THAT. SO IT'S UP
TO US TO HELP MAKE THAT ONE
00:24:23PERSON MEET THAT ONE JOB AND
HELP OUR EMPLOYER COMMUNITY
00:24:27REALIZE IT IS SMART FOR THEIR
BOTTOM LINE. THESE ARE SMART,
00:24:31GOOD PEOPLE WHO ARE WILL BE
SMART, GOOD EMPLOYEES. AND I
00:24:36THINK ALL OF OUR BUSINESS
PARTNERS HERE TODAY HAVE ALREADY
00:24:39LEARNED THAT. AND SO TO YOU
TODAY WE'RE PREACHING TO THE
00:24:43CHOIR AND WE'RE THANKFUL FOR THE
EXAMPLE YOU'RE SETTING AND WE
00:24:46KNOW EVERY DAY YOU'RE OUT
RECRUITING OTHERS, AS WELL AND
00:24:48HELP US ALL CONTRIBUTE TO OUR
MISSION. SO I WANT TO THANK YOU
00:24:53AGAIN FOR BEING HERE TODAY AND
AGAIN I WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE IT
00:24:56IS A PRIVILEGE TO BE A PART OF
THIS COMMUNITY AND WE JUST NEED
00:25:01TO FIGHT ON. THANK YOU.
(APPLAUSE.) >>>: I NEXT HAVE THE
00:25:09PLEASURE OF INTRODUCING CAROLYN
KNIGHT. SHE IS GOING TO SHARE
00:25:14SOME THINGS WITH US ABOUT SOME
OF THE POSITIVE THINGS SHE'S
00:25:17BEEN ABLE TO DO WITH ASSISTIVE
TECHNOLOGY AND SHE'S ALSO THE
00:25:20EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE
DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES
00:25:25COUNCIL. PLEASE WELCOME CAROLYN.
(APPLAUSE.) >>>: THANK YOU. I
00:25:33HAVE TO AGREE WITH JACQUI,
ALTHOUGH I STARTED A LITTLE BIT
00:25:37EARLIER IN STATE GOVERNMENT THAN
SHE DID. I WAS IN KINDERGARTEN.
00:25:40HE WAS A VERY TALENTED CHILD.
EVERYONE COMMENTED ON IT. BUT I
00:25:46TOO HAVE NEVER SEEN THE KIND OF
COLLABORATION AMONG STATE
00:25:50AGENCIES THAT WE SEE TODAY. I'VE
BEEN ON COUNCIL FOR FOUR YEARS
00:25:53AND IT'S JUST WONDERFUL. I'M SO
GLAD I STAYED WORKING LONG
00:25:59ENOUGH TO GET TO SEE A DAY LIKE
THIS WHEN WE ALL COME TOGETHER
00:26:02AROUND EMPLOYMENT. ALTHOUGH WE
CAN'T PROMISE A JOB FOR EVERY
00:26:09PERSON WITH A DISABILITY WHO
WANTS IT, WE CAN'T PROMISE TO
00:26:13MATCH THEM UP WITH AN EMPLOYER,
WHAT WE CAN DO AND SHOULD BE
00:26:18WORKING ON ALL THE TIME ARE THE
REASONS THAT A PERSON WITH A
00:26:23DISABILITY OR THEIR FAMILY MIGHT
BELIEVE THEY CAN'T GET A JOB.
00:26:27AND ONE OF THOSE WOULD BE
BENEFITS. FAMILY MEMBERS, THE
00:26:31PERSON THEMSELVES MAY THINK I'M
ON MEDICAID, I CAN'T POSSIBLY
00:26:35GIVE THAT UP, WONDERFUL MEDICAL
BENEFITS FOR A JOB THAT MIGHT
00:26:40NOT PAY BENEFITS OR I MIGHT LOSE
AND THEN WHAT WOULD I DO. WELL,
00:26:44THERE'S A THING CALLED MEDICAID
BUY-IN. THAT'S NOT A NEW
00:26:47PROGRAM. THAT'S BEEN AROUND FOR
YEARS. MORE THAN 30 STATES HAVE
00:26:51THAT PROGRAM. THERE ARE MORE
THAN 8,000 PEOPLE TODAY WHO ARE
00:26:56ON MEDICAID BUY-IN. AND IF YOU
DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT IS, YOU CAN
00:27:00ASK CHUCK BAIN WHO IS SITTING
RIGHT THERE AND A MEMBER OF
00:27:03GOVERNOR'S COUNCIL. HE'S
DELIGHTED TO COME AND TALK TO
00:27:06YOU ABOUT THIS PROGRAM. WE'VE
GOT TO GET OVER THAT CONCERN
00:27:11ABOUT FOLKS LOSING THEIR
BENEFITS BECAUSE THIS IS A
00:27:14WONDERFUL PROGRAM. AND THEN OF
COURSE THE OTHER PIECE IS
00:27:18TECHNOLOGY. IF A PERSON CAN'T
TALK, CAN'T WALK, CAN'T READ, IT
00:27:23REALLY DOESN'T MATTER MUCH
ANYMORE. WITH SMART PHONES AND I
00:27:31PADS AND ALL THE NEW THINGS THAT
I DON'T EVEN KNOW ABOUT, YOU
00:27:36DON'T EVEN KNOW ABOUT, IF WE
DON'T HAVE IT TODAY, WE'LL
00:27:39SURELY HAVE IT NEXT WEEK, IT'S
JUST ROLLING ALONG AT AN
00:27:43INCREDIBLE PACE. SO THERE'S A
WAY. SO NO ONE SHOULD LET ANYONE
00:27:47SAY YOU CAN'T WORK, YOU'RE JUST
NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO. WELL
00:27:52MEANING, BUT NOT GIVING THEM THE
KIND OF ENCOURAGEMENT THAT THEY
00:27:56NEED. I THINK WITH TECHNOLOGY,
THE BIG DEAL IS ONCE YOU FIGURE
00:28:00OUT WHAT YOU MIGHT NEED, HOW THE
HECK ARE YOU GOING TO PAY FOR
00:28:02IT. AND THAT'S THE QUESTION THAT
COUNCIL WANTS TO HELP ANSWER AND
00:28:07WE'RE GOING TO START WORKING ON
THIS. MY WHOLE GROUP OF 35
00:28:10COUNCIL MEMBERS THAT THE
GOVERNOR APPOINTED HAS SAID THAT
00:28:14THAT'S WHAT THEY WANT US TO DO.
SO WE'RE GOING TO HELP FIGURE
00:28:19OUT WHO'S GOING TO PAY FOR THOSE
BENEFITS. I THINK THE DISABILITY
00:28:23COMMUNITY IS KNOWN FOR WHEN THEY
DECIDE THAT THEY'RE GOING TO
00:28:28PUSH ON SOMETHING, THEY DON'T
STOP AND THEY SUCCEED. I THINK
00:28:32THE NEXT PUSH IS GOING TO BE
GETTING A WAY TO PAY FOR THOSE
00:28:35BENEFITS, BECAUSE IT'S SO SMART,
IT PAYS OFF IN THE END. SO WE
00:28:41MAY HAVE TO PUSH MEDICAID, WE
MAY HAVE TO PUSH ALL KINDS OF
00:28:45FOLKS TO PAY FOR THAT, BUT I
BELIEVE WE'LL DO IT, AND I'LL
00:28:49PROBABLY BE ASKING SOME OF YOU
TO COME HELP US MAKE THIS
00:28:52HAPPEN. SO I JUST SAY TO YOU
DON'T LET ANYBODY SAY I REALLY
00:28:58DON'T THINK I CAN WORK, I'D LOVE
TO BUT I CAN'T BECAUSE OF -- YOU
00:29:03FINISH THE SENTENCE FOR THEM AND
SAY, OH, YEAH, WE HAVE GOT AN
00:29:06ANSWER FOR YOU, AND IF WE DON'T,
WE'LL FIND IT FOR YOU. THANK
00:29:10YOU. (APPLAUSE.) >>>: NEXT I
HAVE THE GREAT PLEASURE OF
00:29:18INTRODUCING SOMEONE WHO REALLY
NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION WHEN IT
00:29:23COMES TO BEING AN ADVOCATE FOR
INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES.
00:29:28HE'S A FATHER, HE'S A GREAT
LEADER, AND I'VE HAD THE GREAT
00:29:31PRIVILEGE OF BEING ABLE TO
LISTEN BECAUSE WHEN JOHN MARTIN
00:29:35TALKS I ALWAYS MAKE SURE I
LISTEN BECAUSE HE'S PROBABLY
00:29:40FORGOTTEN MORE ABOUT HOW TO RUN
AN AGENCY HELPING INDIVIDUALS
00:29:45WITH DISABILITIES THAN I KNOW,
SO I ALWAYS TRY TO MAKE SURE I
00:29:50LISTEN. SO PLEASE WELCOME
DIRECTOR JOHN MARTIN. >>>:
00:29:54THANKS, KEVIN, FOR THOSE KIND
WORDS. I WISH THEY WERE THE
00:30:00TRUTH, BUT I WILL ACCEPT THEM
ANYWAY. IT'S REALLY AN HONOR TO
00:30:06BE HERE THIS MORNING AND, KEVIN,
THANKS FORGIVING ME THE
00:30:10OPPORTUNITY TO SAY A FEW WORDS.
THOSE OF YOU AT THE DEPARTMENT
00:30:16WHO WERE SITTING DOWN THERE IN
THE FRONT ROW, WE JUST FINISHED
00:30:21GOING AROUND THE STATE AND
MEETING WITH A LOT OF EMPLOYERS
00:30:25AND INDIVIDUALS WHO WERE OUT
THERE ALREADY WORKING IN THE
00:30:30FIELD. AND WE VISITED IN
CINCINNATI KAISER PICKLES AND
00:30:38MET TONY WHO WAS WORKING THERE
AND TALKED TO TONY AND THE OWNER
00:30:42OF KAISER PICKLES. AND WE MET
WITH LEROSA'S PIZZA, THEY HAVE
00:30:46AN INCREDIBLE CALL CENTER. WE
LEARNED A LOT ABOUT THE PIZZA
00:30:50BUSINESS. GOT TO SAMPLE SOME
GREAT PIZZA. AND SAW THE
00:30:55COMMITMENT OF THEM WITH HIRING
FOLKS WITH DISABILITIES AND THE
00:30:59IMPORTANT PART THAT THEY PLAY IN
THE OPERATION, BOTH THE CALL
00:31:03CENTER AS WELL AS IN THE
RESTAURANTS. AND WE WENT TO THE
00:31:10CLEVELAND CLINIC UP IN THE
CINCINNATI AREA AND MET WITH
00:31:16MATT AND RAY AND A NUMBER OF
OTHERS AND LOOKED AT THE KINDS
00:31:19OF WORK THEY WERE DOING AT THE
CLEVELAND CLINIC. AND WE TALKED
00:31:23WITH THE FOLKS AT THE CLEVELAND
CLINIC ABOUT HOW THAT WAS
00:31:26WORKING BOTH FOR THE CLINIC AND
FOR THE INDIVIDUALS. AND THEN WE
00:31:31ALSO WERE DOWN IN LOGAN, OHIO, A
LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN CLEVELAND,
00:31:35AND WE MET THERE WITH THE OWNER
OF CHERRY'S TIRES AND BUSH'S
00:31:39RESTAURANT AND IN A SUBURB OF
LOGAN THE SOMERSET CAFE AND
00:31:49TALKED TO ANDY, CRYSTAL AND
JEREMY WHO WERE WORKING IN THOSE
00:31:53BUSINESSES. THEN WE ALSO WERE UP
IN BOWLING GREEN AND MET WITH
00:32:01ANDREW WHO WAS DOING RECORDS,
COPYING IN THE COMMISSIONER'S
00:32:05OFFICE AND TIFFANY AND MICHAEL
WHO WERE WORKING AT A PLACE
00:32:15CALLED THE HERITAGE CORNER. IT'S
A -- IT WAS A RESTAURANT. AND IT
00:32:18WAS INTERESTING THE COMMON
THEMES THAT WE HEARD AS WE DID
00:32:21THIS, WHICH WAS ALL OF THESE
EMPLOYERS REALLY VALUED THE
00:32:26FOLKS WHO WERE WORKING WITH THEM
AND WERE ASKING EVEN FOR COULD
00:32:33YOU SEND US MORE PEOPLE WHO CARE
SO MUCH ABOUT BEING ON TIME AND
00:32:35WHO DO THEIR JOB WITH SUCH PRIDE
AND SO PRECISION. AND THE
00:32:41CONSUMERS, THE INDIVIDUALS WHO
WERE WORKING, THE PRIDE THAT
00:32:49THEY TOOK, THE SELF-ESTEEM IN
THEIR JOB AND THE MONEY THAT
00:32:51THEY WERE MAKING AND HOW THAT
MONEY WAS HAVING AN IMPACT ON
00:32:54THEIR LIFE. ONE OF THE THINGS
WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT IS AS
00:32:58MOST OF YOU KNOW THE GOVERNOR
SIGNED EMPLOYMENT FIRST
00:33:03INITIATIVE ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO.
AND THE REASON FOR OUR TOUR WAS
00:33:08TO GATHER INFORMATION FOR OUR
TASK FORCE THAT'S LOOKING AT HOW
00:33:13DO WE MAKE SURE AS FOLKS GO FROM
SCHOOL TO WORK THAT THEY'RE
00:33:15HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO
PARTICIPATE IN JOBS LIKE THE
00:33:19ONES I JUST DESCRIBED RATHER
THAN HAVING TO GO TO A SHELTERED
00:33:23WORKSHOP AS THE DEFAULT. AND THE
OTHER THING WE LEARNED IS AS WE
00:33:27WERE GOING AROUND IS THAT HOW
MANY DIFFERENT AGENCIES PLAYED A
00:33:33PART IN THE SUCCESS. KEVIN
ACCOMPANIED US ON ONE OF THE
00:33:36SITES. AND RSC HAS BEEN A KEY TO
THE SUCCESS OF A LOT OF OUR
00:33:40FOLKS GETTING JOBS. AND IN SOME
PLACES IT WAS REALLY A
00:33:45PARTICULAR TEACHER IN THE SCHOOL
SYSTEM WHO WAS COMMITTED AND
00:33:49WANTED TO SEE IT WORK AND MADE
IT WORK. OR IT WAS SOMEBODY FROM
00:33:54THE LOCAL DEVELOPMENTAL
DISABILITIES COUNTY BOARD WHO
00:33:57HAD A PASSION AND MADE THE
CONNECTION. AND IN A NUMBER OF
00:34:01CASES IT WAS COMMITTED FAMILIES
WHO SAID MY SON OR DAUGHTER CAN
00:34:04WORK, I'M GOING TO SEE IT
HAPPEN, AND THEY MADE IT HAPPEN.
00:34:07SO AS WE COME TOGETHER AS A
COMMUNITY WITH THE SUPPORT OF
00:34:14EDUCATION, RSC, MENTAL HEALTH,
COUNTY BOARDS OF DD, ALL OF US
00:34:17COMING TOGETHER AND WORKING
TOGETHER TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR
00:34:22SYSTEMS ARE SUPPORTING FOLKS SO
THEY GET THAT OPPORTUNITY TO
00:34:26EARN A FAIR WAGE AND TO BE ABLE
TO HAVE INCREASED INDEPENDENCE
00:34:34AS A VERY VALUABLE MEMBER OF OUR
COMMUNITY. SO THANKS FOR ALL OF
00:34:38YOU, PARTICULARLY THANKS TO
KEVIN AT RSC FOR THE SUPPORT OF
00:34:42THE EMPLOYMENT FIRST INITIATIVE
AND WE REALLY LOOK FORWARD TO
00:34:46THE COMING YEARS WHEN WE WILL
EXPERIENCE MORE AND MORE SUCCESS
00:34:50AS WE LEARN ABOUT THE KEYS TO
SUCCESSFUL COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT.
00:34:55SO THANKS. (APPLAUSE.) >>>:
THANK YOU, DIRECTOR MARTIN. NOW
00:35:04I HAVE THE GREAT PLEASURE OF
INTRODUCING CHRIS MORANDA WHO IS
00:35:09THE PRESIDENT OF THE OHIO
BUSINESS LEADERSHIP NETWORK. AND
00:35:12SHE'S ALSO GOING TO HAVE MIKE
GARTNER, WHO IS THE ASSOCIATE
00:35:15DIRECTOR OF FINANCE AND ALSO THE
LEADER OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY
00:35:19NETWORK AT PROCTER & GAMBLE. AND
I WANT TO TELL YOU THAT THIS
00:35:26RELATIONSHIP THAT WE HAVE
CONTINUED, THE BUSINESS
00:35:29LEADERSHIP NETWORK -- AND I
DON'T WANT TO STEAL CHRIS'S
00:35:33THUNDER, BUT CHRIS IS ABOUT AS
PASSIONATE AS YOU CAN BE ABOUT
00:35:37BUSINESS AND INDIVIDUALS WITH
DISABILITIES. AND WE'VE HAD THE
00:35:42GREAT FORTUNE OF GETTING TO SIT
AND TALK TOGETHER AND BRINGING
00:35:48IN SOME PEOPLE LIKE BETH BUTLER
AND KATHY WEST EVANS AT OUR
00:35:52DISABILITY JOB SUMMIT. WE WERE
SITTING THERE TALKING ABOUT ALL
00:35:54THESE GRANDIOS IDEAS, I SAY THAT
BECAUSE I THINK WE CAN DO IT IN
00:35:59EXPANDING OUR BUSINESS
LEADERSHIP NETWORK, AND JUST
00:36:05FROM THE TIME WE TALKED AT THE
JOB SITE WE WERE ABLE TO GET
00:36:08MIKE INVOLVED AS PART OF THE
BLN. SO WITH THAT I WANT TO MAKE
00:36:13SURE THAT I SAY THAT I
APPRECIATE THE LEADERSHIP THAT
00:36:17CHRIS HAS BROUGHT TO THE TABLE.
AND LET'S WELCOME HER NOW. THANK
00:36:22YOU. (APPLAUSE.) >>>: THANK YOU.
I AM SO HONORED TO BE A PART OF
00:36:30THIS CELEBRATION AND SHARE THE
STAGE WITH THESE DISTINGUISHED
00:36:35MEMBERS OF OUR REHAB COMMUNITY.
AND ALSO TO EXPRESS MY
00:36:39APPRECIATION TO ALL THE
EMPLOYERS THAT ARE HERE TODAY.
00:36:44THOSE ON THE OHIO BLN BOARD AND
THOSE THAT I'VE NOT MET YET, I
00:36:48HOPE TO, SO I'LL BE BACK THERE.
I'D LIKE TO BEGIN BY SHARING
00:36:54SOME THOUGHTS FROM KATHLEEN
MARTINEZ. SHE IS AN ASSISTANT
00:36:59SECRETARY OF LABOR FOR
DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT POLICY.
00:37:04AND SHE PUT OUT A DISABILITY
BLOG A COUPLE DAYS AGO. I FELT
00:37:13IT REALLY SETS THE TONE FOR WHY
WE'RE HERE TODAY. THE IMPORTANCE
00:37:15OF WORK EXTENDS FAR BEYOND ANY
ONE INDIVIDUAL. WHEN ALL PEOPLE
00:37:21ARE ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE AND BE
RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR ABILITIES,
00:37:26SOCIETY AS A WHOLE REAPS THE
BENEFITS. LOCAL ECONOMIES ARE
00:37:30BOLSTERED, COMMUNITIES ARE
STRENGTHENED. THIS IMPORTANT
00:37:35PRINCIPAL IS AT THE HEART OF
THIS YEAR'S NATIONAL DISABILITY
00:37:39EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH
THEME. A STRONG WORK FORCE IS AN
00:37:45INCLUSIVE WORK FORCE. WHAT CAN
YOU DO? THE THEME CONVEYS THAT
00:37:50WE ALL HAVE A ROLE TO PLAY AND
BENEFITS TO GAIN FROM,
00:37:55INCREASING EMPLOYMENT
OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE WITH
00:38:00DISABILITIES, TO START EMPLOYERS
MUST FOSTER WORK PLACES THAT ARE
00:38:08WELCOMING TO CURRENT AND
POTENTIAL EMPLOYEES WITH
00:38:13DISABILITIES. BUT THE
RESPONSIBILITY DOESN'T STOP
00:38:15THERE. THOSE WITH DISABILITIES
MUST UNDERSTAND THE INTRINSIC
00:38:18VALUE OF WORK AND THE SKILLS AND
TALENTS THEY HAVE TO OFFER.
00:38:21YOUTH WITH DISABILITIES MUST
GROW UP WITH THE EXPECTATION OF
00:38:26EMPLOYMENT AND PARENTS,
EDUCATORS AND OTHER ADULTS OF
00:38:32INFLUENCE IN THEIR LIVES MUST
REINFORCE THIS. SO I THOUGHT
00:38:35THAT WAS KIND OF APPROPRIATE FOR
TODAY AS WE'RE HERE. I'M THE
00:38:41MANAGER OF DISABILITY SERVICES
FOR OHIOHEALTH. IF YOU'RE NOT
00:38:46FROM COLUMBUS AREA, MAYBE YOU
DON'T KNOW US, BUT MOST WHO ARE,
00:38:52WE ARE A LARGE HEALTH CARE
SYSTEM. WE SERVE ABOUT 3 MILLION
00:38:58RESIDENTS IN A 46 COUNTY REGION.
AND WE HAVE ABOUT 16,000
00:39:05ASSOCIATES. OUR CARDINAL VALUE
IS HONOR THE DIGNITY AND WORTH
00:39:08OF EACH PERSON. I SPOKE AT THIS
SAME PLACE ABOUT FIVE YEARS AGO
00:39:15AND AT THAT TIME WE WERE TALKING
WITH RSC ABOUT A PROGRAM ABOUT
00:39:17RETAINING A VALUED EMPLOYEE. BUT
SO MUCH SINCE THEN HAS HAPPENED,
00:39:22AS WELL AS MANY OTHER EMPLOYERS
WHO HAVE CONTINUED TO MOVE THE
00:39:27NEEDLE ON HIRING AND RETAINING
PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. I'M
00:39:30VERY FORTUNATE OHIOHEALTH THAT
WE HAVE PARTNERED WITH THE
00:39:34COMMUNITY WITH RSC, WE HAVE TWO
PROJECT SEARCH PROGRAMS, TWO OF
00:39:39OUR HOSPITALS. WE ALSO HAVE HAD
100 PERCENT PLACEMENT RATE AT
00:39:46OUR DUBLIN HOSPITAL, WHICH THAT
MEANS WE HAD 11 GRADUATES WHO
00:39:49BECAME EMPLOYED IN OUR
OHIOHEALTH SYSTEM. SO WE'RE VERY
00:39:53EXCITED ABOUT THAT. WE CONTINUE
TO PARTNER WITH TYKIAH, WITH
00:39:59WRIGHTCHOICE, GOODWILL AND
OTHERS TO PROVIDE INTERNSHIP
00:40:02OPPORTUNITIES. REALLY WHAT I
WANT TO TALK ABOUT IS HOW I
00:40:07BECAME A CHAMPION WITHIN
OHIOHEALTH FIRST AND WE STARTED
00:40:12WITH A DISABILITY PROGRAM OF
RETURN TO WORK AND THEN
00:40:16BROADENED THAT AS WE CONTINUED.
BUT I EXTEND MY EFFORTS
00:40:21STATEWIDE TO SERVE AS THE
PRESIDENT OF THE OHIO BUSINESS
00:40:27LEADERSHIP NETWORK. AND I DO
HAVE TO ALSO RECOGNIZE THE
00:40:29GOVERNOR'S COUNCIL ON PEOPLE
WITH DISABILITIES, BECAUSE
00:40:32THAT'S REALLY WHERE THIS BEGAN
AND STARTED. AND I WAS A PART OF
00:40:35THAT AND SO APPRECIATIVE OF THAT
EFFORT. SO REALLY WHO WE ARE,
00:40:37THE BLN, WE ARE PART OF A
NATIONAL NETWORK OF BUSINESS
00:40:38LEADERSHIP NETWORKS IN 30
STATES. WE ARE AFFILIATED WITH
00:40:39THE U.S. BUSINESS LEADERSHIP
THE OHIO BLN IS COMPOSED OF
00:41:17VOLUNTEERS. MANY OF YOU ARE HERE
TODAY FROM THE BUSINESS
00:41:23COMMUNITY. WE ARE OFFERING
LEADERSHIP BY EXAMPLE THROUGH A
00:41:26SUPPORTED EMPLOYER TO EMPLOYER
NETWORK. I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT
00:41:29FOR YOU TO HEAR AND PUT IN THIS
ROOM THE MISSION OF THE OHIO
00:41:33BLN. IT IS TO PROVIDE OHIO
EMPLOYER WITH RELEVANT
00:41:36INFORMATION AND RESOURCES THAT
ENABLE THEM TO ENHANCE THEIR
00:41:40DIVERSITY INITIATIVES AND
INCREASE THEIR BOLT LINES
00:41:44THROUGH THE SUCCESSFUL
RECRUITMENT, SELECTION,
00:41:48TRAINING, AND RETENTION OF A
WORK FORCE THAT INCLUDES
00:41:52QUALIFIED INDIVIDUALS WITH
DISABILITIES. THE IMPRESSIVE
00:41:55LIST OF COMPANIES WHO SERVE ON
THE OHIO BOARD OF DIRECTORS
00:41:59INCLUDES OHIOHEALTH, LOWE'S
DISTRIBUTION CENTER, HHP, BEST
00:42:05BUY, CARDINAL HEALTH, CINCINNATI
CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL, COLUMBUS
00:42:13CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, CSX, FIFTH
THIRD BANK, K MART DISTRIBUTION
00:42:20CENTER, MANPOWER, OHIO INDUSTRY
LIAISON GROUP, PROCTER & GAMBLE,
00:42:25TJX CORPORATION, TRINITY HEALTH,
UNITED COLLECTIONS BUREAU, INC.,
00:42:33UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO, VETERANS
ADMINISTRATION, WALL GREEN'S
00:42:38DISTRIBUTION CENTER, AND WALMART
DISTRIBUTION CENTER. AND REALLY
00:42:43WE STARTED AS A SMALL LITTLE
HANDFUL OF PEOPLE AND WE JUST
00:42:46GREW IT AND GREW IT AND GREW IT,
AND WE'RE NOT DONE YET. SO I
00:42:51WANT TO TELL YOU A COUPLE THINGS
ABOUT WHAT WE'VE DONE, BECAUSE I
00:42:55THINK IT'S IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO
KNOW, OKAY, YEAH, WE HAVE THIS
00:42:58BOARD, THAT'S GREAT, BUT WHAT
ARE YOU DOING? DO YOU JUST MEET?
00:43:00DO YOU JUST TALK? WHAT DO YOU
DO? SO MOST RECENTLY WE WERE
00:43:04ABLE TO GO TO THE CINCINNATI AND
PARTNER THE CINCINNATI CHAMBER
00:43:09OF COMMERCE AND WE HAD A
WORKSHOP THERE ENTITLED -- AND
00:43:13IT WAS ENTITLED UNLOCK YOUR
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE, TAPPING
00:43:17TALENT WITH DIFFERENT ABILITIES
AND FEATURED WERE PROCTER &
00:43:21GAMBLE, MIKE WAS WITH ME, MITCH
MORGAN FROM FIFTH THIRD BANK AND
00:43:24OHIOHEALTH, AND WE ALSO
PARTICIPATED AS DIRECTOR MILLER
00:43:30SAID IN THE SEPTEMBER DISABILITY
JOB SUMMIT HELD IN COLUMBUS. YOU
00:43:35KNOW WHAT DIRECTOR MILLER ASKED,
WE DELIVERED. WE REALLY DID.
00:43:42MEMBER COMPANIES EDUCATED THE
JOB SEEKERS WITH DISABILITIES,
00:43:48THE EMPLOYER, AND SERVICE
PROVIDERS, AND SOME OF THE
00:43:51TOPICS THAT WE OFFERED WE HAD AN
OHIO BLN ALLSTARS WHICH ABOUT
00:43:56OUR PROGRAMS, WHAT WE'RE DOING,
WHAT EMPLOYERS LOOK FOR WHEN
00:44:00HIRING. I WAS FORTUNATE TO
PARTNER WITH THE EMPLOYMENT TEAM
00:44:04TO HAVE THAT SESSION. WE ALSO
HAD TYKIAH AND KAREN FISHUM WITH
00:44:14DRESS FOR SUCCESS AND CARDINAL
HEALTH PROVIDED RESUME WRITING
00:44:20AND MOCK INTERVIEW LABS. SO
THESE SESSIONS REALLY WERE
00:44:23PROVIDED THROUGHOUT THE TWO-DAY
EVENT. SOME OF US DID THAT
00:44:26SESSION FOUR TIMES. SO WE WERE
ABLE TO CATCH ANYONE WHO WANTED
00:44:30TO BE COME TO THE EVENT. SO
REALLY I KNOW THAT I SPEAK ON
00:44:38BEHALF OF THE BOARD WHEN I SAY
TO DIRECTOR MILLER THAT WE LOOK
00:44:42FORWARD TO PARTICIPATING IN NEXT
YEAR'S SUMMIT. SO YOU ALSO MAY
00:44:49HAVE NOTICED THAT THERE IS MORE
BUSINESS PARTICIPATION IN THIS
00:44:52EVENT THAN EVER BEFORE. AND
THAT'S BECAUSE MANY OF OUR OHIO
00:44:56BLN BOARD MEMBERS ARE HERE
TODAY, AS WELL AS BUSINESS
00:44:59ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEMBERS
REPRESENTING LOCAL BUSINESSES.
00:45:03WE'RE SO APPRECIATIVE OF THAT.
SO IT IS MY HOPE THAT YOU KNOW A
00:45:08LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT US, ABOUT
THE OHIO BLN AND HOW WE
00:45:13COLLABORATE WITH RSC TO EDUCATE
EMPLOYERS ON THE BENEFITS OF
00:45:17HIRING PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES.
AS A BOARD WE CONTINUE TO
00:45:21PROVIDE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
TO OHIO EMPLOYERS ON THE VALUE
00:45:26AND ROI -- WE KNOW WHAT THAT
MEANS -- OF HIRING JOB SEEKERS
00:45:29WITH DISABILITIES. THANK SO YOU
MUCH. I APPRECIATE BEING HERE
00:45:33WITH YOU TODAY. (APPLAUSE.) I'M
SORRY. I HAVE A COMMERCIAL. I
00:45:39APOLOGIZE. HERE'S THE
COMMERCIAL: THE ZOO BACK THERE,
00:45:44BETSY, THEY'RE HIRING. SHE HAS
GOT HIRING 16 AND OLDER. HERE'S
00:45:52SOME OF THE JOBS. INDICATOR
LEAD, CANTEEN MEMBER, CUSTOMER
00:45:55SERVICE, RETAIL TEAM MEMBER,
GROUNDS MAINTENANCE. THERE'S A
00:46:00LOT OF JOBS HERE, FOLKS. SO YOU
KNOW ANYBODY, SEND THEM HER WAY.
00:46:04THANK YOU. (APPLAUSE.) >>>: HOW
CAN YOU NOT ENJOY THE ENTHUSIASM
00:46:13THAT CHRIS BRINGS TO THE TABLE?
LET'S ASK MIKE GARTNER WITH
00:46:17PROCTER & GAMBLE TO COME UP IN
FRONT. MIKE. >>>: THANK YOU,
00:46:21DIRECTOR MILLER. GOOD AFTERNOON.
FIRST OF ALL, I'M PROUD TO BE
00:46:30HERE REPRESENTING PROCTER &
GAMBLE. I'M PROUD TO BE HERE
00:46:34AMONGST MANY FOLKS WHO ARE BOTH
ADVOCATES AND LEADERS AND
00:46:36FINDING OPPORTUNITIES TO EMPLOY
PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. IT'S
00:46:40REALLY GREAT TO BE HERE. MY DAY
JOB IS THE FINANCE, BUT MY
00:46:46PASSIONATE JOB IS THE LEADER OF
THE DISABILITY NETWORK AT
00:46:49PROCTER & GAMBLE. I'VE BEEN
DOING THAT FOR ABOUT FOUR YEARS.
00:46:53THE NETWORK HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED
FROM A NATIONAL LEVEL FOR 15
00:46:57YEARS AND GLOBALLY FOR THREE
YEARS. AS MANY OF YOU MAY KNOW,
00:47:01P & G IS A LARGE COMPANY IN THE
WORLD, ABOUT $80 BILLION IN
00:47:08SALES. WE HAVE A MARKETING EXPO
OVER THERE. HOPEFULLY YOU ALL
00:47:14SEE THOSE PRODUCTS IN YOUR
HOUSEHOLD, IN YOUR PANTRIES. WE
00:47:17OPERATE ABOUT 180 COUNTRIES
AROUND THE WORLD AND EMPLOY
00:47:23ABOUT 110,000 PEOPLE GLOBALLY.
CLEARLY LARGE. BUT WE'RE LOCATED
00:47:29100 MILES BEAUTIFUL DOWNTOWN
CINCINNATI. SO WHEN YOU TALK
00:47:32ABOUT THE ROSES, LOVE THEM. OUR
NETWORK'S MISSION IS REALLY TO
00:47:39ENABLE EMPLOYEES WHO JUST HAPPEN
TO HAVE A DISABILITY AS WELL AS
00:47:42EMPLOYEES WHO HAVE DISABLED
DEPENDENTS LIKE MYSELF. I HAD A
00:47:45DAUGHTER WHO AT FIVE MINUTES HAD
MENINGITIS AND HAS TRAUMATIC
00:47:48BRAIN INJURY. SHE'S BEEN 18 THIS
MONTH. OUR OBJECTIVE IS TO HELP
00:47:53THAT GROUP OF EMPLOYEES TO BE
ABLE TO PERFORM AT THEIR PEAK TO
00:47:57BE INCLUDED AND DO WHATEVER THEY
WILL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN
00:48:01THEIR WORK ENDEAVOR. OUR NETWORK
HAS THREE PRIMARY FOCUS AREAS,
00:48:05ONE IS EMPLOYMENT AND
RECRUITING. THE OTHER ONE IS
00:48:08EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT AND SUPPORT.
SO YOU THINK OF ACCOMMODATIONS
00:48:11OR TECHNOLOGY ASSISTED DEVICES,
WHATEVER AN INDIVIDUAL MIGHT
00:48:14NEED TO MAKE THEM PERFORM AT
THEIR PEAK. AS WELL AS TO FOCUS
00:48:18ON MARKETPLACE AND EXTERNAL
PARTNERSHIPS. WE'VE INVESTED
00:48:21WITH SPECIAL OLYMPICS, THE PARA
OLYMPIC SPONSORSHIP. BUT HOW DO
00:48:27WE DRIVE AND INFLUENCE THE
PRODUCT DESIGN OF OUR PRODUCTS
00:48:32TODAY TO BE MORE INCLUSIVE FOR
PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES? MANY
00:48:37OF YOU MAY NOT KNOW THAT P & G
HIRES -- WE PROMOTE FROM WITHIN.
00:48:40WE'RE 95 PERCENT OF THE PEOPLE
WHO START WITH PROCTER & GAMBLE
00:48:46START AT ENTRY LEVEL. SO
BASICALLY YOU HAVE TO GET IT
00:48:48RIGHT IN THE FRONT END BECAUSE
THAT'S WHERE YOU GET STARTED AND
00:48:51YOU ADVANCE UP TO HIGHER LEVELS
IN THE COMPANY. OUR DIVERSITY
00:48:54MISSION AT P & G IS SIMPLE AND
TRADEMARKED. EVERYONE VALUED,
00:49:00EVERYONE INCLUDED, AND EVERYBODY
PERFORM AT THEIR PEAK. THAT'S
00:49:05WHAT WE TRY TO DO. DIVERSITY AT
P & G IS BRINGING TOGETHER
00:49:07INDIVIDUALS WITH DIFFERENT
BACKGROUND, CULTURES, WORKING
00:49:12AND THINKING STYLES, PROVIDING
MARKEDLY DIFFERENT TALENTS,
00:49:15PERSPECTIVE, AND LIFE AND CAREER
EXPERIENCES. SO IT'S NOT JUST
00:49:19YOUR TRADITIONAL DIVERSITY
DEFINITION. PEOPLE WITH
00:49:22DISABILITIES ARE HIGHLY CAPABLE
INDIVIDUALS THAT ENRICH OUR
00:49:24DIVERSITY CULTURE AND WORK
FORCE. PERIOD. THAT'S WHAT IT
00:49:27IS. I'M PROUD TO SHARE WITH YOU
TWO INITIATIVES THAT WE'VE
00:49:31FOCUSED ON IN THE PAST COUPLE
YEARS ABOUT EMPLOYMENT
00:49:34OPPORTUNITIES. THAT'S THE
DISCUSSION POINT. FIRST OVER A
00:49:37YEAR AGO OUR -- THIS IS NOT IN
OHIO. WE HIRED 30 PERCENT OF OUR
00:49:45WORK FORCE HAVE EITHER A
DEVELOPMENTAL, PHYSICAL
00:49:49DISABILITY WORKING ALONGSIDE
EMPLOYEES EARNING THE SAME WAGES
00:49:53AND DOING THE SAME WORK. I WILL
TELL YOU JUST LIKE THE BUSINESS
00:49:57LEADERSHIP NETWORK THIS IS NOT
ABOUT JUST CREATING THESE IDEAS
00:50:00OF DOING THIS BUT WE STOLE THIS
FROM WALGREENS. LOWES HAS DONE
00:50:06THE SAME THING. THAT'S THE
BEAUTY OF THE BLN, SHARING THESE
00:50:09THINGS,ET GETTING PASSIONATE
WITH THE COMPANY AND EXPAND IT
00:50:13WITHIN YOUR OPERATIONS. THIS IS
A PILOT OPERATION FOR P & G. WE
00:50:18DO HAVE MANUFACTURING PLANTS
WITHIN OHIO, IN LIMA. AND THEY
00:50:25HAVE MET AND EXCEEDED EVERY COST
AND PRODUCTIVITY OBJECTIVE THAT
00:50:28WE MET, AS WALGREENS HAS
LEARNED, AS WELL. WE'RE GOING TO
00:50:32EXPAND THESE PLANS AND
EMPLOYMENT PRACTICES ACROSS THE
00:50:36U.S. CUSTOMIZATION OPERATIONS,
THAT WOULD ALSO INCLUDE LIMA AS
00:50:40A POSSIBILITY. THE OTHER THING I
WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU IS FROM
00:50:45MAINE, THE DIVERSE OF VOCATION
AND REHABILITATION COMMISSION,
00:50:50WE PARTNER WITH THOSE
ORGANIZATIONS TO FIND THE RIGHT
00:50:53TALENTED PEOPLE TO DO THE WORK.
THEY COMMUNICATED TO US THAT NOT
00:50:58ONLY WAS THE PARTNERSHIP
MATCHING THE ROLES WITH THE
00:51:02PEOPLE VERY SUCCESSFUL, IN FACT,
WE PLACED 85 PERCENT OF THE
00:51:05CANDIDATES THAT THEY GAVE TO US,
BUT SECOND THE COST FOR THEM WAS
00:51:08NOT 30 PERCENT CHEAPER, NOT 60
PERCENT, BUT IT WAS 71 PERCENT
00:51:13LESS EXPENSIVE THAN TYPICAL
AVERAGE COST FOR THEM TO WORK
00:51:15WITH DIFFERENT ORGANIZATIONS TO
DRIVE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY. SO
00:51:18THERE IS A HUGE OPPORTUNITY THAT
THE PRIVATE SECTOR NEEDS TO TAKE
00:51:21INTO CONSIDERATION HERE. IF WE
CAN GET MORE PARTNERS IN THE
00:51:25PRIVATE SECTOR WE CAN FIND A WAY
TO LOWER THE COST OF HIRING. ON
00:51:27THE RECRUITING SIDE. WE TALKED
ABOUT THE WARRIORS, WE TALKED
00:51:36ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON WITH
VETERANS. WE HAVE SEVERAL
00:51:39EFFORTS UNDERWAY TO RECRUIT AND
HIRING RETURNING WARRIORS. ONE
00:51:41PROGRAM IS WHERE WE HAVE A
PARTNER WITH -- YOU HEAR
00:51:46PARTNER, I SAW IT A LOT. WE'RE
NOT ALWAYS INNOVATORS S THEY'RE
00:51:50A DEFENSE CONTRACTOR WHO HAVE
CREATED OPERATION IMPACT. WE'VE
00:51:54SIGNED ON ONE MORE THAN 100
NETWORK OF CHAMPION COMPANIES
00:52:00WHO PLACE THOSE COMING BACK FROM
THE WAR AND BRING THEM INTO
00:52:03EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES WHETHER
IT IS IN IOWA, THE CAROLINAS,
00:52:10WALTER REED, EFFORT BRAG,
WHEREVER, WE WILL FIND
00:52:14OPPORTUNITIES WITHIN THE U.S.
THAT WE CAN TRY TO MATCH THOSE
00:52:17SKILLS. THE OTHER THING IS OUR
SIGNATURE PROGRAM THAT WE
00:52:21STARTED ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO,
IT'S CALLED WARRIORS TO P & G.
00:52:24SIMILAR BUT IT'S A RECRUITING
EFFORTS THAT WE HAVE A VERY
00:52:27DEDICATED WORK FORCE, IN FACT
OUR CEO IS A FORMER ARMY RANGER
00:52:32SO SHE'S COMMITTED TO HIRING
VETERANS AND VETERANS ARE VERY
00:52:36GOOD LEADERS. BUT WE HAVE
INDIVIDUALS IN PROCTER & GAMBLE
00:52:43WORKING WITH THE 46 TRANSITION
UNITS ACROSS THE U.S. AS THOSE
00:52:46PEOPLE DO GET TRANSITIONED BACK,
WARRIORS WHO HAVE BEEN WOUNDED
00:52:48AND THOSE WHO HAVE NOT TO MATCH
THOSE WITH EMPLOYMENT. WE HAVE
00:52:54MET AND EXCEEDED EVERY HIRING
TARGET THAT WE HAVE FOR THOSE
00:53:04INDIVIDUALS. I'M PROUD OF THOSE
TWO PROGRAMS AND WE'RE ON TRACK
00:53:07AND WE HOPE THAT OTHERS MIGHT BE
A PARTNER OF THE OPERATION
00:53:10NETWORK OF CHAMPION COMPANIES OR
THINK ABOUT INTERNALLY
00:53:16DEVELOPING THE PROGRAM. WHILE P
& G GETS RECOGNIZED LOCALLY,
00:53:21NATIONALLY AND GLOBALLY FOR MANY
LEADERSHIP AND DIVERSITY
00:53:24PROGRAMS, WE KNOW WE'RE ONLY
SCRATCHING THE SURFACE WITH OUR
00:53:27HIRING OF PEOPLE WITH
DISABILITIES. WE LOOK FORWARD TO
00:53:31EXPANDING OUR SUCCESSFUL
EMPLOYMENT PRACTICES, CONTINUE
00:53:34TO INNOVATE AND TRY NEW ONES AND
SHARE THESE SUCCESS STORIES LIKE
00:53:39TODAY TO OTHER BUSINESSES SO
THEY CAN REAPPLY THOSE IN THEIR
00:53:41INDUSTRIES AND WE CAN DRIVE MORE
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR
00:53:45INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES.
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.
00:53:50(APPLAUSE.) >>>: NOW TO ME THIS
IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF
00:53:57THE AGENDA. WE'VE GOT TWO VERY,
VERY DISTINGUISHED GUESTS WHO
00:54:01ARE GOING TO SHARE THEIR
EXPERIENCES AND I'VE HAD THE
00:54:07PRIVILEGE OF MEETING TYKIAH
WRIGHT WHO IS SOMEBODY WHO IS --
00:54:13TALK ABOUT ALWAYS SMILING.
TYKIAH IS THAT. AND SHE IS A
00:54:17GO-GETTER. AND WHEN SHE SHARES
THIS STORY I THINK YOU WILL COME
00:54:26TO THAT CONCLUSION YOURSELF. SO
PLEASE WELCOME TYKIAH.
00:54:31(APPLAUSE.) >>>: THANK YOU,
DIRECTOR MILLER AND THE RSC TEAM
00:54:37FOR PUTTING THIS EVENT TOGETHER.
WELCOME AND GREETINGS TO GUESTS,
00:54:42COLLEAGUES AND HONORED
REPRESENTATIVES. BEFORE I GET
00:54:46STARTED I HAVE TO DO THIS, O-H.
>>>: I-O. >>>: I DON'T KNOW
00:54:52ABOUT YOU, BUT I WATCHED THE
GAME ON SATURDAY, SO ALL I CAN
00:54:55SAY IS O-H-I-O. I AM EXCITED TO
BE HERE WITH YOU TODAY AS OHIO
00:55:02CELEBRATES NATIONAL DISABILITY
EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH. AS I
00:55:10WAS PREPARING FOR TODAY I WAS
REFLECTING AND I WAS ASKING
00:55:15MYSELF HOW DID I GET HERE. AND I
THOUGHT ABOUT THE SUPPORTS AND
00:55:21SERVICES THAT EMPOWERED ME TO
GET INDEPENDENCE. GET WHAT? RSC
00:55:25HAS BEEN A MAJOR PART OF THAT
EQUATION. I CAN HONESTLY SAY
00:55:32THAT BECAUSE OF RSC I HAVE BEEN
A ENTREPRENEUR FOR THE LAST TEN
00:55:39YEARS. THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF
LABOR ESTABLISHES A THEME EVERY
00:55:49YEAR FOR OCTOBER AND WE HEARD
THE THEME IS A SUCCESSFUL WORK
00:55:54FORCE IS AN INCLUSIVE WORK
FORCE, WHAT CAN YOU DO? AND THAT
00:55:59IS A DIRECT CALL TO ACTION FOR
ALL OF US. WHAT CAN YOU DO? AND
00:56:05QUITE FRANKLY I TOOK IT
PERSONALLY. I HAVE ASKED MYSELF
00:56:10WHAT AM I DOING? FROM MYELINS,
WRIGHTCHOICE IS THE BRIDGE
00:56:15BETWEEN CAMPUS AND THE WAR PLACE
FOR MORE THAN 18,500 COLLEGE
00:56:20STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES ALL
ACROSS OHIO. BUT YET WE -- AND
00:56:27WHEN I SAY WE, I MEAN COLLEGE
GRADUATES WITH DISABILITIES, AS
00:56:30WELL AS COLLEGE STUDENTS WITH
DISABILITIES. WE REPRESENT A
00:56:33SMALL BUT SIGNIFICANT SEGMENT OF
THE POPULATION. BUT WE
00:56:37CONTRIBUTE GREATLY TO THE
UNEMPLOYMENT RATE. WHEN I WAS AT
00:56:42THE NATIONAL FORUM ON DISABILITY
ISSUES A COUPLE WEEKS AGO, IT
00:56:46WAS SAID THAT THE POPULATION OF
PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES IS THE
00:56:52ONLY POPULATION THAT WANTS TO
PAY TAXES. AND AS CRAZY AS THAT
00:56:56SOUNDS, IT IS VERY TRUE. COLLEGE
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES ARE
00:57:01GRADUATING AND SEEKING
OPPORTUNITIES THAT ARE HARD TO
00:57:05FILL BECAUSE OF THE COMPETITION.
I KNOW BECAUSE IN 2001 I WAS
00:57:11THAT GRADUATE WITH TWO DEGREES,
GOOD EXPERIENCE, AND NO
00:57:16OPPORTUNITIES. AND LIKE MANY OF
US I FOUND MYSELF UNDER
00:57:20EMPLOYED. BUT I HAD THIS
RIDICULOUS DRIVE TO CREATE
00:57:25CHANGE. SO I WASN'T REALLY
FOCUSING ON THE PRESENT. I WAS
00:57:29FOCUSING ON THE FUTURE AND
LAYING A FOUNDATION FOR WHAT IS
00:57:33KNOWN TODAY AS WRIGHTCHOICE. I
WAS THINKING ABOUT TRACY. TRACY
00:57:38IS AN RSC CONSUMER. SHE IS A
RECENT GRADUATE OF THE OHIO
00:57:43STATE UNIVERSITY AND SHE HAS A
RESUME OF TREMENDOUS LEADERSHIP
00:57:47SKILLS. TRACY GOT INVOLVED IN
OUR PROGRAM THIS SUMMER BECAUSE
00:57:53TRACY DIDN'T HAVE ANY REAL WORLD
EXPERIENCE. BUT BY INVOLVED IN
00:57:58WRIGHTCHOICE THIS SUMMER TRACY
NOT ONLY LANDED ONE BUT TWO
00:58:02JOBS. TRACY HAD AN INTERNSHIP AT
THE OHIO STATE CIVIL RIGHTS
00:58:07COMMISSION WHERE SHE WAS ABLE TO
UTILIZE HER POLITICAL SCIENCE
00:58:12DEGREE AND LANDED ONE IN THE
SUMMER TRACY GOT A PART-TIME JOB
00:58:16AT RSC AS A CONSUMER SUPPORT
ADVOCATE WHERE SHE WAS ABLE TO
00:58:20DO OUR DISABILITY STUDY MINOR.
AND NOW I AM EXCITED THAT TRACY
00:58:28IS WELL ON HER WAY. SHE IS NOW
FULL-TIME EMPLOYED WITH ONE OF
00:58:31THE COUNTY BOARDS AS A CASE
MANAGER. AND THAT IS AN EXAMPLE
00:58:38OF HOW EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
CAN PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR FUTURE.
00:58:45AS AN ORGANIZATION WRIGHTCHOICE
UNDERSTANDS THE NEEDS OF
00:58:49STUDENTS AND THE NEEDS OF
BUSINESSES ALIKE. WE UNDERSTAND
00:58:53THE IMPORTANCE OF REPRESENTING
THE BUSINESS CASE FOR INCLUSION
00:58:57TO EMPLOYER. LIKE IT WAS STATED
EARLIER, IT'S ALL ABOUT THE
00:59:01RETURN ON INVESTMENT, THE ROI.
COMPANIES WANT TO INCREASE
00:59:06REVENUE, DECREASE COST, AND THEY
WANT TO MAKE SHAREHOLDERS HAPPY.
00:59:10LET ME LET YOU IN ON A LITTLE
SECRET. PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
00:59:15CAN HELP YOU REACH EVERY GOAL IF
ONLY GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY. WHEN
00:59:21I THINK ABOUT COMPANIES IN OHIO,
PROCTER & GAMBLE GETS IT. THEY
00:59:26UNDERSTAND THAT GOING AFTER OUR
TALENT AND OUR BUYING POWER WILL
00:59:30ULTIMATELY INCREASE THEIR
REVENUES. AND BY FULLY ENGAGING
00:59:36STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES INTO
THEIR INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS, THEIR
00:59:40RECRUITMENT COSTS REDUCE.
PROCTER & GAMBLE GIVES PEOPLE
00:59:45WITH DISABILITIES AN OPPORTUNITY
TO REALIZE THEIR FULL POTENTIAL
00:59:47AND LIVE THE AMERICAN DREAM.
NOW, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, LET'S
00:59:54KEEP IT REAL. AS MY STUDENTS
ALWAYS TELL ME, MS. WRIGHT,
00:59:57LET'S KEEP IT 100. YOU KNOW,
IT'S MORE THAN THE ROI. THE
01:00:01UNEMPLOYMENT RATE HAS HOVERED
AROUND 70 PERCENT FOR THE LAST
01:00:0620 PERCENT. AND WE KNOW THAT
SOME COMPANIES UNDERSTAND THE
01:00:11ROI. BUT STILL DON'T HAVE A
RECRUITMENT PLAN. OR THEY STILL
01:00:18HAVE CHALLENGES CREATING
INCLUSION WITHIN THEIR
01:00:23ORGANIZATION. ALL OF THOSE
FACTORS HAVE A -- AND
01:00:33UNFORTUNATELY THAT IS ATTITUDE,
AS COLONEL MOE ALLUDED TO
01:00:39EARLIER. OUR REALITY SHAPES OUR
PERCEPTION AND OUR PERCEPTION
01:00:45BRINGS OUR ATTITUDE. I HAD A
STUDENT IN OUR PROGRAM ONE
01:00:51SUMMER WRIGHTCHOICE FOR MULTIPLE
DIVERSITY AND DISABILITY
01:00:54INCLUSION. WE HAD STUDENTS WITH
DISABILITIES AND STUDENTS
01:00:57WITHOUT DISABILITIES SO WE
CREATED A TRAINING GROUND FOR
01:01:00OUR WORK FORCE. SO I HAD A YOUNG
STUDENT A COUPLE SUMMER AGO
01:01:05SAID, MS. WRIGHT, YOU KNOW,
GROWING UP I WAS NEVER REALLY
01:01:10AROUND A PERSON WITH A
DISABILITY. HE SAID IT WASN'T
01:01:14UNTIL I CAME TO COLLEGE THAT I
WAS FACED WITH THE REALITY WITH
01:01:18MY OWN ROOMMATE WHO HAD A
DISABILITY, AND HE DIDN'T KNOW
01:01:23HOW TO HANDLE THAT SITUATION.
QUITE FRANKLY, HE DIDN'T KNOW IF
01:01:27HE WAS GOING TO BE ABLE TO MAKE
IT PAST THE FIRST WEEK. HE
01:01:31CALLED HIS PARENTS. HIS PARENTS
SAID, YOU'RE 18, YOU'RE GROWN.
01:01:34FIGURE IT OUT. THEN I BEGAN TO
ENGAGE MY ROOMMATE IN
01:01:38CONVERSATION. THEN I REALIZED
THAT HE'S JUST THE SAME PERSON
01:01:42THAT I AM. QUITE FRANKLY I FOUND
MYSELF BECOMING HIS BEST FRIEND.
01:01:49HE BEGAN TO ENGAGE IN WHEELCHAIR
BASKETBALL AND WHEELCHAIR RUGBY
01:01:55AND FOR A MINUTE THERE HE DIDN'T
KNOW WHAT HE WAS GOING TO DO. A
01:02:01LOT OF US ARE FACED WITH
DIFFERENT SITUATIONS THAT QUITE
01:02:14FRANKLY SOME OF US HAVE NOT
BEEN. OUR ATTITUDE IS ONE
01:02:20CHARACTERISTIC THAT WE ALL HAVE
THAT CAN BE CHANGED. I CALL IT
01:02:26LIFE-STYLE CHANGING. YOU'RE
CONFRONTED WITH A LIFE-STYLE AND
01:02:35YOU HAVE TO MAKE THE POST OUT OF
IT. EARLIER I MENTIONED THE
01:02:38WORLD INTENTIONAL. IN ORDER FOR
US TO MOVE THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE
01:02:41IN OUR FAVOR, EMPLOYERS HAVE TO
BE MORE INTENTIONAL ABOUT
01:02:47INCLUSION. I ALWAYS TALK TO
EMPLOYERS ABOUT CONSISTENT
01:02:52EDUCATION. LAST YEAR I HAD THE
OPPORTUNITY OF ATTENDING THE
01:02:56U.S. BLN CONFERENCE IN KENTUCKY.
I WAS IN A WORKSHOP AND THE
01:03:00PANEL OF EMPLOYERS WERE SHARING
BEST PRACTICES. THE ONE EMPLOYER
01:03:05SAID THAT THEY HAD DISABILITY
AWARENESS TRAINING INTO THEIR
01:03:12NEW HIRE ORIENTATION. I SAID
WOW. THAT REALLY IS INTENTIONAL.
01:03:19WHEN WE TALK ABOUT MARKETING THE
BRAND AWARENESS. I ALWAYS SHARE
01:03:23THE STORY FROM A CONSUMER SIDE
SHARE THE STORY OF KOHL'S.
01:03:27EVERYONE KNOWS I LOVE TO SHOP.
I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR A REASON
01:03:33TO SHOP. ONE DAY I WENT INTO
KOHL'S AND KOHL'S HAD A MANIKIN
01:03:39IN A WHEELCHAIR. AND THAT BLEW
ME AWAY. IT DIDN'T COST KOHL'S
01:03:44ANYMORE MONEY TO BEND THE LEGS
ON THE MANIKIN. CAN YOU IMAGINE
01:03:49HOW MUCH THEIR REVENUE INCREASED
BY DOING THAT LITTLE ACT OF
01:03:57PUTTING THE MANIKIN IN A
WHEELCHAIR. I KNOW I SHOP AT
01:04:02KOHL'S FREQUENTLY SO MY REVENUE
WAS DEFINITELY THERE. IT ALSO
01:04:09CREATED A DIRECT IMPROVEMENT
PLAN. AND FROM MYELINS WHERE I
01:04:13STAND I PREACH INTERNSHIP. IF AN
EMPLOYER IS WANTED TO GET PEOPLE
01:04:19WITH DISABILITIES INTO THEIR
ORGANIZATION, INTERNSHIPS IS THE
01:04:23BEST WAY TO START. WE ALWAYS SAY
INTERNS ARE TRY IT BEFORE YOU
01:04:27BYE IT. I HAVEN'T HAD AN
EMPLOYER YET WHO HIRED ONE OF
01:04:31OUR INTERNS AND SAID, YOU KNOW
WHAT, WE DON'T WANT ANOTHER.
01:04:34THEY USUALLY SAY CAN YOU BRING
US MORE. LIKE MIKE SAID EARLIER,
01:04:39SHARING BEST PRACTICES. IT IS SO
IMPORTANT THAT IF YOU WERE AN
01:04:44EMPLOYER THAT HAS A BEST
PRACTICE WITH THE ORGANIZATION,
01:04:49TALK ABOUT IT. TELL OTHER
EMPLOYERS SO THEY CAN THEN MODEL
01:04:53WHAT YOU'RE DOING. WRIGHTCHOICE
RECENTLY WROTE A PUBLICATION
01:04:57CALLED DIVERSITY OF OHIO. THIS
PUBLICATION CELEBRATES THE
01:05:03LEADERSHIP AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS
OF PROFESSIONALS WITH
01:05:06DISABILITIES. I WANTED TO HAVE A
PLATFORM OR PUBLICATION WHERE I
01:05:11CAN SHOW MY STUDENTS WHAT'S
POSSIBLE. BECAUSE I KNOW GROWING
01:05:15UP I REALLY DIDN'T HAVE A PERSON
WITH A DISABILITY TO LOOK TO AND
01:05:18SAY THEY CAN DO IT, I CAN DO IT
TOO. I KNOW IN OHIO'S WORK FORCE
01:05:22WE HAVE LEADERS WITH
DISABILITIES THAT ARE MAKING IT
01:05:25HAPPEN EVERY DAY. WE WERE
DIGGING INTO THE WORK FORCE AND
01:05:32WE'RE FINDING AMAZING
INDIVIDUALS TO TELL THEIR
01:05:36STORIES. WE WERE ALSO
HIGHLIGHTING EMPLOYERS LIKE
01:05:39PROCTER & GAMBLE AND OHIOHEALTH
THAT HAVE BEST PRACTICES AROUND
01:05:45DISABILITY INCLUSION. AND WE
ALSO HAVE AN AMAZING SECTION
01:05:49CALLED NEXT GENERATION AND WE
FEATURE OUR RISE IN COLLEGE
01:05:54STUDENTS WITH 3.0 LEADERSHIP
SKILLS AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
01:05:59IN THE PUBLICATION SO THE
EMPLOYERS CAN SEE AND READ ABOUT
01:06:02WHO THEIR UP AND COMING WORK
FORCE IS. WE HAVE A TABLE OVER
01:06:08THERE. IF YOU WOULD LIKE MORE
INFORMATION ABOUT THE
01:06:10PUBLICATION OR YOU WOULD LIKE US
TO SEND YOU A LINK SO YOU CAN
01:06:14BUY THE PUBLICATION, PLEASE STOP
OVER AND SEE OUR TEAM OVER
01:06:16THERE. YOU KNOW, I REALLY
BELIEVE THAT THE MOST POWERFUL
01:06:22METHOD OF EDUCATION OUTSIDE OF
TRAINING IS SHARING SUCCESS
01:06:29STORIES IN PRINT AND ALL FORMS
OF MEDIA, BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT
01:06:35SEEING AND HEARING IS BELIEVING.
PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES FACE
01:06:39DAILY THINGS, LIKE
TRANSPORTATION AND THE LACK
01:06:46THEREOF. BUT THE LACK OF
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IS THE
01:06:58ULTIMATE INDIGNITY. BUSINESSES
THAT EMPLOY PEOPLE WITH
01:07:05DISABILITIES UNDERSTAND THE NEED
TO TURN SOCIAL ISSUES INTO
01:07:10BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES. LADIES
AND GENTLEMEN, THE POPULATION IS
01:07:14RIGHT, THE TALENT IS HERE IN
OHIO. YOU JUST MUST FIRST FIGURE
01:07:21OUT THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION
WHAT CAN YOU DO. GOD BLESS YOU
01:07:31AND THANK YOU. (APPLAUSE.) >>>:
THANK YOU, TYKIAH. NEXT I'D LIKE
01:07:45TO INTRODUCE BLAKE TAXTON. BLAKE
IS A STUDENT AT THE OHIO STATE
01:07:48UNIVERSITY. SO LET'S WELCOME
BLAKE. (APPLAUSE.) >>>: THANK
01:07:57YOU, DIRECTOR MILLER. SHIRLEY,
YOU'RE SITTING IN THE BACK. I
01:08:02DON'T THINK YOU DID ME ANY
FAVORS HAVING ME GO LAST. TODAY
01:08:09I'D LIKE TO TALK A LITTLE BIT
ABOUT WHO I AM, MY OWN PERSONAL
01:08:11HISTORY. AND THEN I'D LIKE TO
SHARE A COUPLE OF OBSERVATIONS
01:08:14WHICH WILL NOW SEEM LIKE A
COMMON THEME FROM EVERYONE UP AT
01:08:18THE STAGE. FIRST, LET ME SAY I'M
HONORED TO BE HERE. IT'S A
01:08:21PLEASURE TO GET TO PARTICIPATE.
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME, I'M FROM
01:08:27RIGHT HERE IN COLUMBUS. I WENT
TO HIGH SCHOOL IN UPPER
01:08:30ARLINGTON. AND AS A HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR, THIS WAS IN 2009, I WAS
01:08:35A PICTURE OF HEALTH, I WAS A CAP
CONTAIN OF THE HIGH SCHOOL
01:08:38ROWING TEAM. I WAS LOOKING IN
ROWING IN COLLEGE. IN MARCH OF
01:08:42THAT YEAR I CONTRACTED FLESH
EATING DISEASE. IT BASICALLY
01:08:48KILLS ANYTHING THAT GETS A HOLD
OF IT. IN A MATTER OF DAYS I
01:08:55WENT FROM PERFECTLY HEALTHY TO
VIRTUALLY DEAD. MY HEART, MY
01:09:01LUNGS, MY LIVER, MY KIDNEYS, ALL
HAD SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY. MORE
01:09:05THAN ONCE MY PARENTS WERE TOLD
THAT WAS IT AND I WASN'T GOING
01:09:09TO MAKE IT. BY THE GRACE OF GOD
THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY
01:09:12MEDICAL CENTER I'M STILL HERE.
AND I SPENT THREE MONTHS IN THE
01:09:18HOSPITAL. WENT THROUGH SURGERY
OVER 20 TIMES. LEFT THE HOSPITAL
01:09:22AT THE END OF JUNE AND BEGAN MY
FRESHMAN YEAR AT OHIO STATE IN
01:09:26SEPTEMBER. AND SINCE THAT TIME
I'VE HAD A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES
01:09:30BOTH IN THE -- BOTH IN SCHOOL
AND IN THE WORK FORCE TO NOT
01:09:35ONLY EXPERIENCE THE WORK FORCE
BUT SEE AND TALK TO OTHER PEOPLE
01:09:38IN SIMILAR SITUATIONS. I WANT TO
SHARE TWO TRAITS THAT I THINK
01:09:44ARE COMMON TO EVERY SINGLE
PERSON AND I KNOW THAT'S AN
01:09:47ABSOLUTE STATEMENT, BUT EVERY
PERSON I'VE COME IN CONTACT WITH
01:09:51THAT HAS A DISABILITY AND IS IN
THE WORK FORCE. THE FIRST ONE IS
01:09:54A WILL TO SUCCEED. LET'S JUST BE
FRANK. LOT OF US FEEL LIKE WE
01:09:58HAVE TO PROVE. WE HAVE TO FEEL
LIKE WE HAVE TO PROVE WE CAN
01:10:04KEEP UP, WE CAN CONTRIBUTE, WE
CAN LEAD. WE HAVE TO PROVE THAT
01:10:09TO SOCIETY. WHEN WE GET THE
CHANCE TO PROVE THAT, WE TAKE
01:10:13IT. THAT'S A POWERFUL
MOTIVATORS. THAT'S NOT TO BE
01:10:19UNDERESTIMATED. TYKIAH IS A
PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THAT. THAT
01:10:25MOTIVATION TO PROVE WHAT WE CAN
TO AND PROVE TO EVERYONE IS AN
01:10:30INCREDIBLY POWERFUL THING. THE
SECOND THING IS THAT -- AND I'VE
01:10:34BEEN AMAZED BY THIS
CONSISTENTLY. THAT DISABLED
01:10:39PEOPLE ARE ONE OF THE EASIEST
PROBLEMS YOU'RE EVER GOING TO
01:10:43MEET. THEY HAVE TO SOLVE
PROBLEMS ON A DAILY BASIS THAT
01:10:47ABLE-BODIED PEOPLE ARE SIMPLE
AND TAKE FOR GRANTED. I WAS
01:10:51CERTAINLY IN THAT BOAT. GROWING
UP I WOULD HAVE NEVER THOUGHT
01:10:56WHAT IT WOULD TAKE TO BE A
PERSON IN A WHEELCHAIR WITH A
01:11:00DISABILITY AND CARRY THE
GROCERIES OR DO THE LAUNDRY OR
01:11:04DRIVE A CAR. IT WOULD HAVE NEVER
OCCURRED TO ME. I WOULD HAVE
01:11:07SAID, OH, OKAY, AND GONE ABOUT
MY BUSINESS. BUT SINCE I'VE
01:11:11BECOME A DISABLED PERSON I'VE
SEEN THE WAYS IN WHICH PEOPLE
01:11:13HAVE TO ADAPT AND HAVE TO BE
CREATIVE AND HAVE TO FIGURE
01:11:16THINGS OUT. AND THAT SAME
REASONING, THAT CREATIVE PROCESS
01:11:20THAT PEOPLE GO THROUGH IN
VARIOUS WAYS EVERY DAY IS HIGHLY
01:11:26TRANSFERABLE INTO THE WORK
PLACE. I'VE SEEN IN MY OWN LIFE
01:11:30-- I FIRST NOTICED THAT -- I'VE
BEEN DOING A CASE STUDY FOR
01:11:34SCHOOL. AND I REALIZED THAT THE
SAME THOUGHT PROCESS I WAS GOING
01:11:39THROUGH WAS THE SAME THOUGHT
PROCESS I WENT THROUGH EVERY DAY
01:11:44TO FIGURE OUT NEW AND DIFFERENT
WAYS TO ACCOMPLISH TASKS THAT
01:11:47EVERYONE ELSE ACCOMPLISHES. AND
SO TO KIND OF PUT THOSE
01:11:54TOGETHER, WE HAVE A POPULATION
THAT'S NOT ONLY INCREDIBLY
01:11:57MOTIVATED -- NEVER UNDERESTIMATE
SOMEONE WITH A TOLL SUCCEED AND
01:12:03SOMETHING TO PROVE. THEY WILL
NEVER CEASE TO AMAZES YOU. NEVER
01:12:08UNDERESTIMATE SOMEBODY WITH A
WILL TO SUCCEED AND SOMETHING TO
01:12:10PROVE. ALSO THEY'RE INCREDIBLY
GOOD PROBLEM SOLVERS. IF I'M
01:12:14RUNNING A COMPANY, THAT'S WHAT
I'M GOING TO HIRE. (APPLAUSE.)
01:12:26AND I HAVE WITH ME, IF I'M SMART
ENOUGH TO WORK THE POWERPOINT.
01:12:34THERE WE HAVE. A COUPLE OF
EXAMPLES. THESE ARE ALL PRETTY
01:12:37RECOGNIZABLE EXAMPLES. ARGUABLY
THE MOST RECOGNIZABLE SCIENTIST
01:12:41ALIVE TODAY. AND OUTSIDE OF
MAYBE ALBERT EINSTEIN PROBABLY
01:12:47THE MOST FLUNKS SCIENTIST IN THE
20TH CENTURY. NOW, HE HAS A
01:12:53SPECIAL TYPE OF ALS AND IS
CONFINED TO A WHEELCHAIR. BUT
01:12:59THANK GOODNESS HE KEPT USING HIS
TALENTS AND GIFTS IN THE
01:13:02WORKPLACE. AND THE REASON I LOVE
THIS EXAMPLE SO MUCH IS AS
01:13:08INCREDIBLE AS IT SOUNDS, THERE
ARE PROBLEMS THAT IF STEPHEN
01:13:12HOCKING HADN'T THOUGHT OF THEM
THERE MIGHT NOT BE ANYONE ALIVE
01:13:15WHO WOULD. HE MIGHT BE THE ONLY
PERSON IN THE WORLD WHO COULD
01:13:19HAVE FIGURED SOME OF THESE
THINGS OUT. THANK GOODNESS HE
01:13:22KEPT AT IT. THE SECOND ONE IS
BEETHOVEN. HE'S A 17TH CENTURY
01:13:37COMPOSER, SOMEWHERE IN THERE,
WHO IN A SAD TWIST OF IRONY WENT
01:13:41DEAF. IN THE LATER PART OF HIS
DEATH WENT DEAF AND SOME PEOPLE
01:13:51SAY HE WAS COMPLETELY DEAF AT
THE TIME OF HIS DEATH, SOME
01:13:53PEOPLE SAY HE COULD HEAR RANDOM
TONES. REGARDLESS OF WHERE IT
01:13:57WAS, HE KEPT COMPOSING EVEN
AFTER HE LOST HIS HEARING. AS A
01:14:00MATTER OF FACT, HE BEGAN TORE
ADD MORE INSTRUMENTS AS HIS
01:14:03HEARING DECLINED SO HE COULD
STILL HEAR THE MUSIC AND COULD
01:14:06STILL CONDUCT. I'VE BEEN TOLD BY
PEOPLE A LOT MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE
01:14:11THAN MYSELF THAT AS HE DID SO HE
CREATED NEW TRENDS IN MUSIC THAT
01:14:15WE MIGHT NOT HAVE HAD IF HE
HADN'T STARTED TO LOSE HIS
01:14:18HEARING AND INCREASING INCREASE
THE SIZE OF HIS SYMPHONY. THIS
01:14:24LAST ONE MIGHT BE THE MOST
SUCCESSFUL PERSON WHO WORKED
01:14:28WITH A DISABILITY IN THE HISTORY
OF THE UNITED STATES, FDR. A LOT
01:14:34OF US KNOW HE WAS STRUCK WITH
POLIO LATER ON IN LIFE AND WENT
01:14:37THROUGH ALL 16 YEARS AS
PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER IN CHIEF
01:14:39IN A WHEELCHAIR. HE HAD ALMOST
NO USE OF HIS LOWER BODY. WE
01:14:45DON'T REMEMBER THAT AS MUCH
BECAUSE THEY ACTUALLY DESIGNATED
01:14:49SECRET SERVICE AGENTS TO STOP
REPORTERS OR PEOPLE WITH CAMERAS
01:14:53FROM TAKING PICTURES WITH HIM
WHILE HE WAS IN A COMPROMISED OR
01:14:58WEAK STATE. SO WE DON'T SEE A
LOT OF IT. FDR ONCE SAID AFTER
01:15:07YOU SPENT TWO YEARS TRYING TO
WIGGLE ONE TOE, EVERYTHING ELSE
01:15:10IS IN PROPORTION. A LOT OF TIMES
CONVERSATION AROUND FDR I THINK
01:15:16GOES SOMETHING LIKE THIS. WOW,
LOOK AT WHAT THIS MAN WHO HAD TO
01:15:22OVERCOME SO MUCH ACHIEVED. AND
THAT'S ABSOLUTELY TRUE. BUT
01:15:27THAT'S OFTENTIMES WHERE THE
CONVERSATION STOPS. I WANT TO
01:15:30TAKE IT ONE STEP FURTHER TODAY.
THERE'S A GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO
01:15:35THINK AND ARGUE THAT FDR WOULD
NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH
01:15:39THE THINGS HE ACCOMPLISHED, LED
THE COUNTRY THROUGH THE GREAT
01:15:42DEPRESSION AND WORLD WAR II IN
THE WAY HE DID UNLESS HE HAD
01:15:45BEEN FORCED TO DEAL WITH HIS
DISABILITY. ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE
01:15:49WAS HIS WIFE. I KNOW THERE'S A
GLARE. ILLNESS PROVED A BLESSING
01:15:57IN DISAGREE, FOR IT GAVE HIM
STRENGTH AND COURAGE HE HAD NOT
01:16:01HAD BEFORE. HE HAD TO THINK OUT
THE FUNDAMENTALS OF LIVING AND
01:16:06LEARN THE GREATEST OF ALL,
INFINITE PATIENCE AND
01:16:11NEVER-ENDING PERSISTENCE. WHAT A
REMARKABLE STATEMENT. THIS
01:16:17REALLY FLOORED ME. WHAT SHE'S
REALLY SAYING IS THAT HIS
01:16:22DISABILITY INCREASED HIS ABILITY
AND HIS CAPABILITY OF DOING HIS
01:16:28JOB. THAT FLOORS ME. HIS
DISABILITY INCREASED HIS
01:16:36CAPABILITY. AND IN DOING SO HE
CHANGED THE WORLD FOREVER.
01:16:44DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN
THAT. AND THAT'S WHAT I WANT TO
01:16:51LEAVE YOU WITH, THE NOTION THAT
PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES HAVE
01:16:54BEEN GIFTED WITH SKILL SETS
BECAUSE OF THOSE DISABILITIES
01:16:58THAT ENABLE THEM TO ADD VALUE,
FIRMS, COMPANIES, SOCIETIES IN
01:17:02WAYS THAT OTHER PEOPLE MIGHT NOT
BE ABLE TO. AND WE NEED TO
01:17:05UTILIZE THAT. AND I THINK
EVERYONE UP ON THE STAGE TODAY,
01:17:08THE WORK THEY'VE DONE IN DOING
SO IS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC.
01:17:11THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME. IT'S
BEEN INCREDIBLE. THANK YOU SO
01:17:14MUCH. (APPLAUSE.) >>>: I'M NOT
GOING TO ADD ANYTHING BECAUSE,
01:17:28BLAKE, YOU MIGHT HAVE A FUTURE
IN THESE WALLS. I GET A FEELING.
01:17:31BOTH YOU AND TYKIAH ARE
UNBELIEVABLE EXAMPLES. AND
01:17:36THERE'S NOTHING I'M GOING TO ADD
TO THAT BECAUSE IT'S PERFECTLY
01:17:39PUT. I'M GOING TO ASK CHRIS
MORANDA TO COME UP. WE'VE GOT
01:17:43SOME THINGS ON BEHALF OF THE
